How Some People Think

September 23, 2008 @ 07:03

Yes, it's amazing how some people think.

Yesterday when I wrote the posting "Pig" I wrote it with a certain purpose that I'm convinced that I accomplished.

I believe in freedom of speech and I believe politicians are fair game for just about anything. I also believe that Sarah Palin is surrounded by a lot of questions marks and might prove to be a disaster if the Republicans are elected.

What I don't believe in is taking personal shots that go beyond the issues at hand, and I especially reject taking shots at a politicians family, people who are on the peripheral. People who are on the peripheral and didn't choose to become targets in any form.

It's interesting that so many people who responded yesterday missed the point. So ready to jump on anything Conservative they immediately aligned themselves with Heather Mallick and defended the bullshit she wrote.

They descried the piece as clever and funny and intelligent when in reality, it was none of that.

It was left wing vitriol that attacked a woman for her looks and insulted her family for their apparent lifestyle. It had nothing to do with politics and had everything to do with a woman (Mallick) who is a frustrated feminist who is uncomfortable with Palin's combination of success and attractiveness - and, of course - her political stripe.

Jump all over Sarah Palin for all the things she deserves to be criticized for. Her position on issues and her track record as a mayor and governor. Criticize her for policy and trustworthiness, but don't criticize her for the thickness of her lips or the image of her husband and children. That's just petty, dirty and most of all, piggish.

I'm especially disappointed in those FreddieP.ca readers who defended Mallick's piece yesterday by describing it, or comparing it to a Saturday Night Live piece.

What a joke.

Mallick's purpose was not to be funny or cute or irreverent. It was to attack someone she hates for being nothing more than good looking and Conservative.

I agree, Fred, don't take shots at family members and etc.

But you know what you wrote about CBC being loony left? Well now you know how I feel about most of AM radio being loony right.

To tell you the truth, both sides are pretty loony if you ask me!

"...and I especially reject taking shots at a politicians family, people who are on the peripheral. People who are on the peripheral and didn't choose to become targets in any form."

C'mon Fred, you can't be serious.

If these people can be used as political props, in the spotlight at the convention, on the cover (!!!) of multiple magazines...I don't really call that being on the periphery. That's being in the eye of the storm, and let's get real - everything these days is fair game.

Conservatives/Repulicans have been conducting these types of personal attacks for YEARS - and yes, personal attacks on family members, family pets, the works. Now that liberals are doing it you are upset?

Palin should have kept the family at home if she wanted them to be on the periphery. Or here's an idea - how about saving your pregnant teenage daughter the humiliation and attention by not accepting the nomination? That kind of tells me what type of person (Palin) we are dealing with here. Family values!

Fred’s point seems to be lost many people.

Fred frequently attacks the job performance of Miller, McGuinty and Dion but never has he critiqued their families or their physical characteristics. THAT is what he’s trying to say.

I got the impression reading the Mallick article that she doesn't like men or women.

Mikey
September 23, 2008 / 09:58

I don't get anybody who can defend the ugly, ugly hatchet job that Mallick did.

It wasn't political commentary, it was just a monkey flinging poo.

Fred, you're bang on. Tackle the policies, the track record, the ideology... the base personal attacks were bizarre and tasteless.

Trish
September 23, 2008 / 09:59

You're point is well taken, Fred, but I'm not buying. Again, Mallick only wrote what a lot of other people were thinking.

Palin is bad for America and bad for the international community, and if it takes a few personal potshots to get that across to voters, then so be it.

Pam
September 23, 2008 / 10:12

Sid you are almost right - it's American men and women Malick hates.

Trish and everybody else - you are missing the point: Whatever Palin is or isn't, it is not the role of Canada's public broadcaster to editorialize a vicious personal attack on Palin's family. Leave that to the Toronto Star...
Malick crossed the line. It would be like National Public Radio dissing Harper's children..

I said it before and I'll say it again - Malick is a pig.

If a right wing journalist wrote something about Jack Layton or any other left wing person, Fred would be applauding it and calling it rational. Fred, you are such a hypocrite.

And, no I am not a Jack Layton fan. Just making a point.....

Freddie, you seem genuinely surprised. It is even evident in the resposes about that people miss the point, call you a hypocrite, etc.

I've noticed that people that are extreme left or extreme right have their head so far up their ass, it doesn't matter what you say, they will twist it to fit their agenda. There is no point even discussing most issues.

I get the point he is trying to make. I agree with it, don't attack someone with vile and venom. But Fred, didn't you do the same thing back to Malick (as some others here have done) by calling her a pig or something else?

I disagree with Malick's approach but I won't go down to her level.

I don't like Palin but this attack was uncalled for. Just like the lies about Obama being Muslim or McCain's physical limitation. They are all uncalled for.

Sid
September 23, 2008 / 12:58

I try to follow politics in the USA and here but usually I have trouble figuring out the sports page. In 100 yrs I'll never figure out the economy. My opinion is that GW Bush served his masters well in the oil and munitions industry---I'm sure Irvine will somewhat disagree here as he knows the oil biz and probably the economy.
Point I was going to make was show me a politician who record is 100% honest and I'll show you a T-Rex at my game farm near Bancroft.
As for McCain, Palin, Obama, Biden, Harper, Dion etc we vote for the PERSON we feel will do the best job knowing that their best effort is in the 50% range.
Many feel GW Bush to be in the 10% range but not them who got richer in the last 8 yrs.

took awhile to find this on Google...no Google promotion as I think it isn't that great.
The debates will be good if any debates could be.
Particularly Biden and Palin. he may have to bring a tube of lipstick and a mail-person! or a fishing rod. She'll bring her hunting knife and a shotgun.
She's probably a better shotter than Cheney or the typical Toronto punk gangster.

Schedule for U.S. presidential debates

Posted Monday, September 22, 2008

A series of U.S. presidential debates will begin this week when John McCain, the Republican contender, and Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate, confront each other Friday evening.

Three presidential debates and one vice presidential debate will take place in the weeks before the Nov. 4 election. All debates are to begin at 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and last 90 minutes. The schedule:

Tuesday, Oct. 7 Presidential debate with questions on any topic from the audience and the Internet, moderated by Tom Brokaw of NBC at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, in a town hall-style format.

Wednesday, Oct. 15 Presidential debate on domestic and economic policy moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, with candidates seated at a table.

I agree with VP debates should be fun to watch. Both Palin and Biden can be snarky with the best of them. However, I’m sure both will stay away from the issues of inexperience and old age. Everything else will be up for grabs.

The McCain/Obama debate will be a yawner. McCain will try really hard to convince us he’ll be tough on terrorism and the economy while Obama will um and ah his way through as he desperately tries to sound intelligent and politically correct.

Really folks,

Unless you are eligible to vote in the USA election you can't change a thing.

I agree that we shouldn't be supporting the CBC when they fund the 'writers' who come up with the stuff that Mallick did. What crap.

Maybe she could provide her insight on the ladies in Canadian politics. That would be more relevant.

Trish
September 23, 2008 / 17:21

I certainly did not defend Heather Mallick. I said she only wrote what others were thinking. Some people here need to be honest with themselves before getting all hot under the collar. That said, I do not approve of Canadian taxpayers having to fund the CBC - at all.

Irvine
September 23, 2008 / 21:33

Argie: You said that Fred attacks Miller or Dalton but never attacks their family. Well neither Miller NOR Dalton parade their family around as props in front of the entire planet on TV.

If you want to use your family to "demonstrate family values" be prepared to be attacked for it.

And can anyone really feel any sympathy for Palin? She points out how she was a beauty queen. She brings up her family issues. She brings her personal life into her career.

And let me tell you if the situation was reversed the Repub's would be ALL OVER Palin if she was a democrat.

PS Fred, as for your tirade against the useless CBC, take a clear look at the ratings & the audience of CBC. Private radio would die to have such an audience, just it's unable to actually create intelligent programmer.

American journalists write articles like this all the time. What's the big deal?? Is it because some Republicans were offended??? Just go blow Harper and get it over with Fred.....blow McCain while you're at it.

I didn't realize how much of a redneck you were.

Colleen
September 24, 2008 / 08:29

I'm totally on board. Mallick's piece was so full of ridiculously personal criticisms, it was embarrassing.
I did, however, love this L.A. Times article and it's conclusions.
You say 'feminist' like it's such bad thing?

Mikey
September 24, 2008 / 11:07

So Fred is a redneck whitey who's jealous of the CBC, is that it?

Jesus, you people are twisted.

Our tax dollars were expropriated to pay Mallick to spew that bile. The facts that "she wrote what other people are thinking", and that most Canadians are rabidly anti-republican do NOT excuse the fact that it was a low-class tantrum on my dime. I'm pissed about it, Fred seems pissed about it, and we have every right to be.

Freddy, if you're a CBC-jealous redneck, I guess I am too. And here I thought that we were simply fiscally prudent people with a sense of decorum.

Irvine
September 24, 2008 / 14:03

Let's delve into the world of Mikey-speak

Left Wing = spending 1.2 billion on a national radio/TV/media service (the BBC is bad too)

Right wing = bailing out the entire credit industry because they had capital lending ratios of 30 to 1.

LOL. The "new right wing" = cafeteria catholics. Pick and choose what to support

Mikey
September 25, 2008 / 10:09

Irvine, I didn't speak a word about the credit crisis, let alone express an opinion on a bail-out.

Thanks for choosing me to be your puppet, I'm flattered. But I'd be happier if you'd pull your hand out of my ass and let me speak for myself.

Wonder Woman
September 25, 2008 / 10:51

I happen to know for a fact that Mikey does not support that ridiculous bailout plan...much like many decent right-wingers who don't appreciate having their hard earned money cyphoned off for government pet projects and distinguished screwups.

That is called consistency of principle. Something most left-wingers are utterly unfamiliar with.

But while we're on the subject (and sorry Fred, for being off topic) some of us also know the current credit crisis doesn't necessarily lay at the feet of the usual targets of left-wing righteous indignation...

The country is in the grip of a horrible mess caused by the inattention of politicians for the last 30 years. That boil is getting ready to burst, and here we have Congress trying to "look busy".
