Vote For The Space Cadet

September 13, 2008 @ 17:07

I'm tempted to vote NDP in the upcoming election.

No, I didn't suffer a severe head injury that would make me say such things, it's something that often crosses my mind when I hear Jack Layton make ridiculous statements generally, and even more ridiculous comments during an election campaign.

Today he's promising to do something about gasoline prices in Canada if somebody ever gives the entire country a frontal lobotomy and elects him Prime Minister.

As wonderful as that sounds it's just plain silly. For an apparently seasoned politician to make such a statement is either a blatant lie or an extreme case of naivety, simply because, it can't be done.

We've been through enough with the gouging and ruthless oil companies in this country and its obvious there's not much any of us can do about it except stop using gas.

I won't get into formula of how oil prices are set in this country other than to say, it's not nearly as above board and honest as they say it is. It's not. It's greed plain and simple, but given our dependency on oil, and the way the supply is strictly controlled by a select few, the only way the government could ever combat the collusion would be to build its own refineries, and of course, that's never going to happen because they're way too expensive.

I don't like the fact that Stephen Harper or any other Prime Minister can't do shit about the price of gas in this country, but at the same time, I realize that's the way it is and it will always come back to the same thing.

If you don't want to get screwed by an oil company, stop using their product.

Impossible I know, but unless you think along those lines there's no use getting revved up about the price and what its doing to your standard of living.

Government can't do anything about it without screwing up several other things, so we can only hope somebody invents a practical electric car and gets it on the market before experiencing a mysterious death.

We're screwed when it comes to the price of gas in this country and for a politician to stand up and say he can do something about it is mindless.

Unless of course you represent the NDP and know you have no chance of ever winning the election and you can say any stupid thing you want.

And that my friends is why I might vote NDP. I'd love to see Jack have to deliver the goods on some of his whacky statements and promises.

It might be worth the four years of hell.

Yeah, we got it good the last time a socialist (AKA Bob Rae) was voted in.

Unfortunately even the US President won't take the oilies to task on the price. We are screwed who ever we get. Unless we could elect Hugo Chavez then it would be about 17 cents a litre, but of course there would be other fundamental country issues.

Freddie P...First...Congrats on the new gig. Hope things go well for you. As for gas prices, google some thing called the "crack spread". Much like the price of oil, the price of gas is determined on the open market. Regardless of what it costs to get it out of the ground and refined, there is a market price for gasoline that is determined by buyers and sellers of the commodity in bulk around the world. This makes up the base to which all other taxes, levies, duties and profits are added on top of. This is what happened this week. With 25% of US refining capacity out, there was a tightening of supply and the price in the market went up. I do not like paying 1.30 for gas but not a lot anyone, Jack Layton, Stephen Harper or George W Bush can do about it!

Vote NDP in FED/Prov or suffer results
September 14, 2008 / 10:14

I will definitely be voting for Jack Layton simply because, the PC's are always supporting the corporate wealthy and the liberals are going to tax me up the ass and on top of it all, will allow more turban wearing terrorist middle-eastern's who can't speak a word of English into my country and take every job from a Canadian born citizen Why is it that every time i hear the word "immigrant" I don't think of Russians,Polish Ukrainians,Italian,Swedish Norwegian, British,Slavic, or any others, I automatically think of Middle- Eastern and terrorism??? Why is that?

If you're not pissed off at the government of Canada, this should piss you off.

http://vueweekly.com/article.php?id=9564

Canada, which has the second largest oil reserves in the world imports a HIGHER PERCENTAGE of foreign oil than America.

Why? Because we take all the oil from the tar sands and send it south to the USA. Eastern Canada is forced to buy oil from the Middle East and Venezeula

Read up people. Imagine what would happen if the imports ceased. You'd have nothing and its your GOVERNMENTS fault

September 14, 2008 / 17:03

Freddie; you could be onto something there... short term pain for long-term gain.

Four years of Bob Rae's NDP muddling led to two consecutive MAJORITIES for the Ontario Tories under Mike Harris... maybe the same would happen federally if pie-in-the-sky Layton screwed things up for four years?!

Then Mike Harris steps in, and runs Canada like a real conservative!

Don't be a fool, Fred! Have you forgotten just how much Jack Layton loves to been photographed with his bike? Don't waste your vote, for god's sake. He's lying through his teeth as is his wife and her ilk, who showed up at my door Friday night trolling for votes. Enough of these people...

Getting back to response #1.
What do you guy's think if our Government moved away from the gas thing, and directed their thinking towards approving electric power. Electric powerded cars, like the Rick Mercer show reported on a few months back..pretty good insight to electronic technology out there. We have an excellent abundance of Hydro-Electricity here which I think could support us, and others....Hydro Electric power! & We own it! Why can't we stop the dependancy on oil? Is Canada afraid to turn the table on dependancy?..Do those guys over there have an abundance of Hydro-Electric power to sell to everyone in the whole wide world?...or just Crude Oil..( which I can recall, has been running out since the 70's )....Last time I checked the books of Canadian resources.....we seem to have an abundace in both. In a day where we can't afford to buy stuff that runs on gas...we need another option....it's time to stop the gas thing.

Freddie,
You know how Jack Layton would do it? He would nationalize the oil companies and their infastructure, implement wage and price controls, and then install a centralized economy in Canada along the lines of his buddies, Lenin, Stalin, Castro, and Mao. Easy.

Mike from Lowville
September 15, 2008 / 07:29

Irvine- you said, "Why? Because we take all the oil from the tar sands and send it south to the USA. Eastern Canada is forced to buy oil from the Middle East and Venezuela"....True. Thanks to NAFTA we can't stop. That was a great deal eh? That included hydro-electric power also. The Mexicans were a bit smarter than us Canadians. They would not agree to that clause in the trade deal.

Bill Maher in the THESTAR yesterday re J McCain. Asked if Macker is a standup guy he said in a 'profession' where they are 90 bullsh*t he may be the most satndup---my paraphrasing...asked if a true standup guy like him would run Bill said I hate religion and believe in drugs so that's not a good way to start a campaign.

September 15, 2008 / 10:17

driving along Sheppard and heading east every staion sold gas at 138.2...nione at 138.1 or 138.3 all 138.2!!!!
if the oil co's want 2.00 they'll do it...whatever the market will bear!!!!!!
does the gov't step in when there's a suspicion of price fixing or just accept the extra revenue and say gosh shucks..remember this gov't took money from it's own employee's pension fund and made a law allowing it...do they care about it's non employee citizens?

Tee
September 15, 2008 / 18:24

If you think that gas prices are too high, then buy stock in gas companies. Simple.

Irvine
September 15, 2008 / 20:49

Mike from Lowville:

Dude, that's all energy, including natural gas too. We gave it away.

Imagine Mike...if imports stopped. That's quite possible given the instability of Venezuela and the Middle East. Canada, awash in oil, couldn't supply the East with crude to refine gas. I doubt the US (which without imports would also have a problem) would surrender any crude. You guys would be sitting on empty.

The answer to cut the price of oil is to stop using so much. Canada uses almost 2x as much oil as the entire UK (which has double the population).

Ian S
September 17, 2008 / 06:57

Irvine, The UK uses so little oil/gas because North Sea gas is too expensive and they are awash in nuclear energy and they coal like they mined it or something. If you're going to make comparisons you have to include all the relevant facts. One thing that they're doing right is putting up the wind turbines wherever they can, but not without a tremendous out cry from the public.

Gary
September 17, 2008 / 16:04

Not to mention the whole country is the size of what, Ontario?

Irvine
September 17, 2008 / 16:46

Ian S and Gary:

North Sea gas is cheaper to extract than bitumen is from the oil sands. North Sea production has been in steep decline over the past 8 years and has fallen about 35%.

The UK uses less fuel for a variety of reasons. One reason is the lack of urban sprawl meaning cities with higher densities. The second reason is automobiles tend to be smaller. There aren't many SUV's in the UK and public transit is more common. Thridly, per capita, the typical Brit lives in 400 sq feet of space compared to 800 sq feet for a Canadian. Smaller residences mean lower heating/electricity bills

You can do the same thing here if you want. But you won't because Canadians love urban sprawl, strip malls and monsters homes in Milton.
