The Spirit Of Radio

September 24, 2008 @ 20:11

Needless to say, FreddieP.ca has had a lot of action over the past couple of days and I love it.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion and I welcome the feedback, even the stuff that paints me as some kind of a redneck roughneck. I just consider the source and write them off as simpletons who can't come up with anything better.

Take Irvine for example. Thirty percent fact and seventy percent bullshit. But I honestly appreciate his input. He adds pepper to my site even though he goes round in circles and really doesn't say much.

But I have to highlight one of the comments I received yesterday. It really blew my mind because whoever "Bram Chester" is, by taking a shot at me, he actually accentuated what I was trying to say in my posting "Harper Connects."

To be an artist doesn't necessarily mean you have to stick your hand out.

Bram Chester wrote this.

"Fred, how do you feel about the fact that the culture generally being attacked is the same independent culture that once built CFNY, which gave you a career?
This isn't a rhetorical question, if you dare to answer it."

Here's the deal "Bram Chester", or whoever you are afraid to say you are, CFNY was built on independent culture by a bunch of wonderful people who received absolutely no government assistance.

They built the "culture" with love and devotion without ever thinking that someone should give them a handout, or a grant or a subsidy. They did it because they believed in it and they were willing to accept what it returned.

They were people I consider family who lived in basement apartments, drove shitty cars and watched every goddamed dollar they spent.

They did shows all by the themselves, often providing their own resources because they wanted to produce the best show possible and provide an "alternative" to most of the junk that other radio stations were dumping on the masses.

How dare you compare them to CBCers who do simple radio shows with a staff of seven or eight. How dare you group them with wingnuts who make sculptures out of cigarette butts and then expect the government to support them.

"Bram Chester" when you tried connect CFNY to subsidized culture and art you were so off base it made me laugh so hard I pissed my pants.

Remember, I lived it.

God bless ya, Freddie...CFNY, the Spirit of Government Subsidized Radio.

If there's one moment I'll remember in my awful, Stephen Harper-private radio daze, it was when Andy Barrie bolted (deserted?) from CFRB to the CBC.

He wrote the staff at CFRB a private memo that was posted for months on the bulletin board.

He admitted that it was time for him to leave private radio for the public sanctuary that was the CBC. But he admitted one thing: he admitted that everybody in private radio should be proud of what they do, even if it's for profit, because he was absolutely astounded at the number of human beings walking around the CBC.

He made it clear that there was no comparison when it came to resources...the CBC had financial producers and Ontario producers and aboriginal producers and equity producers and Toronto producers and entertainment producers.

His point was well taken. Bram Chester and Mike from Lowville and that parasite Irvine have absolutely no idea what it's like to do a show...but I'll tell ya...they'd have an easier time doing it on the public dime.

Stafford, I couldn't have said it any better.

Freddie, you're the king of shit disturbers and I love every minute of it.

This is the only blog I know with a simple layout, old fashioned font and it seems people from all walks of life expressing their opinions in sometimes very heated and emotional blurps. Keep them coming!

Go Harper go!!

Funny though when folks in private TV/Radio are offered jobs at the CBC they go, even after years of crapping all over the CBC.
Andy Barrie is just one of many.
Fred why the frustration with a place that once hired you?
The CBC is far from perfect but I don't understand all the hate.
What is wrong with having a source of media not controlled by big business. Look at City TV during the big iPhone backlash against Rogers from earlier this summer. City essentially ignored the story until they could put a Rogers positive spin on it.
I'm sure Corus news rooms would not report on anything negative about head office.
The CBC costs each Canadian about 0.08 cents a day.
Agreed way to much focus on elitist programming with little appeal to the general public but I still wouldn't get rid of the CBC.
Growing up my folks listened to wonderful show like As It Happens, Quirks and Quarks and Fresh Air.
I would love to see you or Mike Stafford have a show on CBC and shake things up a bit.
Sportzone was way ahead of its time.

****...oh boy will I have fun with this....

Stafford: Let me enlighten you. You..are wrong.

I did have a show. I programmed my own show at CJIQ FM 88.3 in Kitchener. It's an instructional college station & it's alternative rock. I did all my own programming. I covered all the cost of my own music.

Oh, and Stafford...I also acted at CJIQ's "sales" person. I still have the business cards. After an 80 hour work week at IBM Canada, I went out in the streets and tried to sell/barter the station to get it some exposure. I paid for my own business cards. I used my own cell phone. I covered all my own costs out of pocket. I earned $0.00 dollars from CJIQ. I never made a single penny from that station.

I also unofficially covered the costs of streaming for my program and for the station via Myspace. I owned 1000 24Kb audio streams and used them all for CJIQ. The bill was 350 US dollars a month.

So I did all of that without taxpayer money. In fact I did all of that without ANY money at all. Outside of my own. In the 6 years of doing that, I spent over 12,000 dollars of my own money

AND Mr Stafford. I also ran THREE online radio stations. 97X, 103X and Indie 101. I covered the costs of all the music. I bought the software AND bought the computer equipment to run the stations. I simply gave up because of the regulations & the never ending nightmare known as Tariff 22 in Canada.

Good try Stafford. Try a little harder next time.

"they'd have an easier time doing it on the public dime" That Invine is the atual point Stafford was making. You just proved it in your post. good work. How much did that cost you?

Mike from Lowville
September 25, 2008 / 07:27

Stafford? Where do you get off slag'in me on this? When did I slam public radio? So I like CBC. So what? I'm one of the many that believes the CBC is part of the Canadian identity much as the BBC was. If we (as Canadians)can't promote our own culture, art, etc with our money (tax's) then we may as well sell out the whole damn country to corporations. (much like the Harris/Harper agenda)

Jason | GetYourOJ.com
September 25, 2008 / 07:51

Does it still hold true today that people in private radio should be proud of what they do because the vast majority of you on air "personalities", on AM especially, sound awfully generic. Dare I say cookie cutter.

Ball
September 25, 2008 / 09:55

Right on Freddie... the CBC has never had to think about coming up with good programming. (Hockey in this country is a no brainer... but they could not even keep the anthem) I remember one of the sales reps at CFNY in the 80's and how much effort it took to sell the station, and then seeing the same guy at the CFNY reunion in 2003. He told me that he now worked for Papa Government, or Big Daddy (something like that), regardless, he was referring to the CBC like it was a communist regime... going on to talk about the benefits package and that you didn't have to do anything because there was no way they could get rid of you. And that my friends, is the difference between having to make a profit and not caring as long as you have the taxpayer.

One day at the Art Gallery of Ontario, sitting on the floor of one of the rooms was a 5' cubed pile of something that looked like string... I reached out and touched the substance to try to figure out what this piece of crap was made of when a guard yelled at me "Hey, don't touch the art or you will have to leave!" to which I yelled back "If I see any art I will be sure not to touch it!" This is what our tax dollar is funding?

The rule of the arts is simple, if you create something and people would pay to look at it, or listen to it, or pay to own it, then you live for another day... if you create something that no one cares about, then you move on to another line of work. What could be simpler?

Riding my bike along the Danforth, the air cool and crisp the traffic full and steady, what a liberating feeling , 7km from my house to my downtown office- the freedom of leaving my car at home and saving money and energy.

At the Pape red-light there were at least 15 cyclists in a row – I couldn't help but think all these people instead of whining about fuel costs, they decided to take the initiative and invoke change in their lives. Not sit in there basements and whine in the blog-o-sphere about their self-proclaimed right to cheap fuel.

All the way listening to CBC Radio 2 with Tim Allen- great, eclectic songs, intelligent and witty radio personality, and no commercials, no jokes about bowel movements, no canned laughter or jokes about mentally challenged people.

Just another beautiful day in the best city in North America.

Pauly Walnuts

Bill M,

I'll ask you how that bike ride is in the middle of February.

I think everyone here loves Toronto, but nobody here thinks its perfect.

I guess listening to CBC2 for a 16 minute bike ride to a downtown office justifies all the millions of tax payers money...

Argie
September 25, 2008 / 11:26

Wow Irv - that was a great story. At least we know you have a talent for writing entertaining fiction.

You can expect a cheque in the mail from the govt soon. An Order of Cda won’t be too far off in the future.

Sid
September 25, 2008 / 11:55

Hey
Making a livin ain't an easy thing. Nor is getting to work in a city of Toronto's size.
Whether you're in radio, arts, or slugging in a factory it's a daily struggle.
However, we Canadians have it pretty good when you think of all them positives.

Mike
September 25, 2008 / 14:41

So Fred, you just keep digging yourself a deeper hole.

You say that CFNY "...received absolutely no government assistance."

You mean all those CANCON artists CFNY played never received FACTOR or other gov't subsidies? CFNY was known mostly for its music correct? Do you believe that all of those artists that your station played (and your station sold ad spots around) were profit driven businesses?

And, you seem to forget all of the small communities across this great nation that CBC serves that private radio would never ever touch.

Or is your Canada Brampton-Peterborough-Toronto? Every man for himself Fred?
Do us all a favour and move down south.

Irvine
September 25, 2008 / 14:51

Argie: LOL, that's fiction? It's common knowledge I was involved at CJIQ dude. And the station used my name & cell in their over the air advertising to GET advertising. Did you want some names & numbers of people for confirmation ?

See Arg, unlike yourself, I don't sit around and whine about things. I actually get out and do them. Radio made a great hobby job, I love the stuff as much as Freddie P does, just as a place to earn a living, it's a dead end. It would take me 15 years in radio to make what I earn now.

Good try tho slick. I guess it scares you that a radio making, stock trading capitalist actually like the CBC (and listens daily). Like I said man, there is "right wing" and then there is "stupid wing".

Chet
September 25, 2008 / 15:18

that's reminds me, chicken wings and beer would be good tonight

Derek
September 25, 2008 / 17:28

Hey Irvine, thats not a bad radio station listen to it quite a bit because there are never any ads. Usually just straight music.
The volunteer students seem to do a good job.

Argie
September 25, 2008 / 17:35

Irv – You really are an odd man. First you criticize everything Fred writes about. I know blogs are supposed to be about giving your opinion and shooting down the other side but why do you bother with this one if the owner of the blog is a “redneck, inbred, hick, etc” in your words?

You have little or no respect for anyone here; including people who agree with you but day in and day out you come back and write your nonsense.

As for me just whining about stuff, ah, again that’s what a blog is for. Sometimes I agree with Fred, sometimes I think he’s wrong.

Unlike you I don’t feel it’s necessary to describe my educational and employment background. What’s next – you’ll tell us all what sign you are and that you enjoy long walks on the beach. I don’t care and neither does anyone else.

God bless you Irv – because he’s the only one who can help you. Perhaps the exception being a team of psychologists from Vienna.

Irvine
September 25, 2008 / 21:36

Derek, yeah, the kids try & it lives on a shoestring budget.

As for my educational background Argie, you claimed I was "uneducated" and I refuted that dude. Dude, you asked

As for Fred being a hick. He is. So what. What you don't know is I've publicly stated Patterson should be in talk radio. If only because he's such a s-disturber. And I give the guy a ton of credit dude, unlike ALOT of whiny ass radio guys, he NEVER backs down man. He's the man. Even if he is a inbred redneck trailer living, Bud swilling cowboy

And for christ sakes Fred, DRINK CANADIAN beer. Support your people.

Andrew
September 26, 2008 / 08:21

Argie,

As much as I may disagree with Irvine, you cannot bash him for telling us his employment and educational background.

You called him uneducated. He told he he wasn't. Don't attack him for responding to your own ignorant statement.

Stafford said he didn't know what is was like to run a radio show. He countered Stafford's statement with his own experience. He was trying to add credence to his statements.

I don't understand why people attack others in this fashion and then attack them again when they defend themselves.

You showed a lack of respect with your own statements about Irvine. Take the higher road Argie. If Irvine has to get dirty with his own stupid comments, why stoop to his level?

re: Mike @14:41

Don't forget all the Brit artists who were only known because of the BBC. It's too bad the CBC didn't get with it at the time (although they had Brave New Waves).

Sid
September 26, 2008 / 12:43

The CBC TV was promoting The Guess Who and Annie Murray when I was a kid. 60's. They had a show from east to west every day. Monday east coast and A.M. and Doug Billiard and others. Tuesday french. Wednesday Toronto...can't remember the names but some local artists. Thursday TGW and Friday Vancouver.
What was radio doing in the 60's for Canadian artists?
I hear Steel River all the time now but back then it was tough.

Jason from Sudbury
September 26, 2008 / 13:30

I still say the CBC should've dished out the money and kept the Hockey Night In Canada theem. It would've been worth it.
It's always going to be associated with Hockey Night In Canada, even though TSN went and got it, that doesn't matter, people will always associate that theem with Hockey Night In Canada, and whatever new theem that CBC picks will more then likely suck.
A couple months ago I heard some of the ones that people have submited and they are brutal.

I'm surprised the CBC didn't try to set something up with Stompin Tom to use the hockey song or get maybe like Kim Mitchell or somebody, I dont know.

Stafford

As for Mike from Lowville, I assumed incorrectly. I apologize for clumping you with two twenty-something idiots.
