A Few Things

August 26, 2008 @ 10:58

This is one of those posting that has several subjects in it. OK ya buggers.

First of all, how about the arrest of two Toronto guys on the Niagara River on the weekend? Talk about an over-reaction!
It's hard to believe that they would have to spend even a minute in jail. How did common sense go out the window when it was quickly sized up that they were a couple of hosers on a Sea-doo screwing around?
I realize there's a constant threat to the American border by undesirables, but holy cow, this was a bit different.
You'd think during the time this guy was in hospital they could have realized what the situation was and let it go at that.

It will probably seem like an eternity to Robert Smith, the former Alexander Keith's beer pitcher, but twenty months in jail for child porn possession doesn't seem like enough of a slap to me.
He also got three years probation and has been forbidden from having contact with anyone under sixteen, including his own kids, but is that still enough?
If we're going to set an example in Canada, and prove that we really care about protecting our kids, shouldn't guys like this be made an example of?
Granted, it's similar to the drug trade, you have to go after the pushers more than the users, but when it comes to our kids, the rules change.
Nail them all.

As tragic as the Maple Leaf Foods crisis is, there could be an upside.
Maybe everyone will stop eating processed meat, period. Forget about the stuff that's killed people recently, no matter how they dress it up processed meat will probably kill you eventually anyway.

The plans for a Burlington man to gather signatures on a petition in front of beer stores this weekend is noble, but it won't have much impact.
Dalton McGuinty has made it clear that the monopoly will continue and the big boys will continue to run the beer business in Ontario, even it means squeezing the mircro brewers who are making good product but can't get placed in beer stores.
For some reason this province resists the "beer in the corner store" concept even though it works in jurisdictions all over the world, including some in Canada.
And there's never been a better argument against the "Beer Store" than there is right now.
Molson's, Labatt's and Sleeman's are now all foreign owned and its these companies that own and control the "The Beer Store."
Why should foreign ownership that controls 80 percent of beer sales in Ontario, have it all their way?

Finally, good luck and best wishes to all those involved in the launch of "Virgin Radio" in Toronto. I realize how exciting and wonderfully optimistic a re-launch can be.
Only time will tell.

My God, I was actually excited for a breif second when I saw the Virgin Radio, until I realized it's the exact same crap that 99.9 was always playing.

Why is it that a market as big as Toronto only has one new rock station? I would love to see what would happen if CFNY could actually get some real competition. They might actually be forced to go back to their roots.

Argie
August 26, 2008 / 12:21

Every 2 years 99.9 brings in a new on air team or gimmick. And every time they fail. Why? Simply because they can’t compete with CHUM FM.

The saps that listen to that lame station will never leave RR&M for another station. Their formula is simple: Play the same inane, middle of the road adult contemporary crap and have lots of give-aways. Their demo which is mainly 35 and over females love a routine and they stick with CHUM regardless of what they do over at 99.9.

On the Beer Store issue. I've always supported the concept for many different reasons but now I've changed my view. At one time it was the TRUE "in and out store". Not anymore. Again, with this monopoly it all boils down to corporate greed. Under staffed part time store staff give poorer and poorer service. Don't get me started on waiting in line for all the wine'os who bring back their bottles in grocery bags, boxes..... and then have to wait to put them in the black boxes. If I don't have empties to bring back, why in the hell should I have to stand in line behind these tits to pay for my beer??? Unlike the L.C.B.O. the Beer Stores SHOULD be shutdown. Still sell beer at the L.B.C.O. but also at grocery stores, variety stores etc.

Anonymous
August 26, 2008 / 13:14

Agree with Mike. The Beer Store has become everything that is bad about a monopoly. Poorly managed, excessive waiting time, and indifferent service. It's funny, because I usually get great, friendly, knowledgeable service at the LCBO, that other Ontario monopoly. If I could only get my 24s there, I ditch the Beer Store in a heartbeat. Oh, and their "Chill" magazine sucks too.

Argie, I agree with you that CHUM FM is a force to be reckoned with, and that is a very sad sign of the times. I was hoping that the re-launch of 99.9 might be something, but so far it sounds like cookie-cutter radio with the king of no-talent,Ryan Seacrest in the evening.
Satellite radio, here I come.

As I mentioned elsewhere Fred, I'm still waiting for your condemnation of Tony Clement during this meat crisis. Half a dozen dead people and he's at the Obama convention. Clement is the Minister of Health.

As for the beer store, well Alberta has private liquor stores & it's a dream. I can buy a 6 pack on my own time, not on the Beer Stores time. And the prices are lower. I can buy Waterloo Dark beer in Calgary CHEAPER than I could buy it in Ontario (and the brewery was in the city I lived in).

Had to peek at the Virgin web page Freddie linked in the hopes that Mad Dog and Milly were gone, alas no such luck.

As for the reason you get better service at the LCBO is it is totally run/owned by the government, not like the beer cartels running the Beer Store.

The Beer store by me was renoed and the self service was taken away, they added 2 cashiers in the middle which is never staffed, always have to wait with the empty returns people, what a pain in the ass. I drive an extra 15 minutes west to the Glen Abbey beer store so I can browse and pick my own.

Time will tell? Please! Seacrest and Madonna Fred... and you have written about how much you like Seacrest...

it's Toronto radio SUCKING to it's FULL potential

Time is not a factor. Seacrest man, Seacrest.

Doesn't get any worse

I don't hold out much hope for Virgin Radio. I do think it will actually help Mix 99.9 with it's ratings but I don't think they'll smash CHUM (who they are after).

Astral Media has the opportunity to do something pretty interesting in Toronto at 99.9 but so far it's just been the status quo. They could have added some UK or Euro pop songs that don't get airplay in Toronto. They could have reached out and tried something cutting edge, but no...it's the same old.

Not to mention these "radio" folks put a canned program in evening drive in the largest city in Canada.

Since moving West, I've come to learn that Toronto radio is the most dull & lame stuff on the dial. EDMONTON has a superior FM dial to Toronto and admittedly, I like gloating about that.

Stinky Bum
August 26, 2008 / 22:50

Totally agree with Disgruntled Joe -- why bother re-branding the exact same stuff? Virgin Radio in Europe is VERY cool and is completely different from this format. It'll be interesting to see if they start to move towards that. Whenever we go to Italy, I lock it on that station.

I've gotta say that I'm surpirsed that Bad Dog and Silly survived the switch and Steve Anthony too -- although, I'm amazed every day that I hear his voice on the radio. Amazed that he can keep a job. He's got to be one of the most depressing radio personalities I've ever heard and one of the worst interviewers. He says things deliberately to piss celebs off, which I'm sure he finds amusing, but it's the Michael Scott School of Broadcasting as far as I'm concerned. I think Steve should just stick to voiceover work.

Mad Dog has sounded bitter for quite a while, so I sense that their time is almost up. Billy sounds completely disengaged. The funniest things she does are those "1 minute inside a woman's head" which was brilliant. Don't hear that anymore. Must've been taking away from MD's spotlight.

Get a satellite radio, you won't ever have to listen to "personalities" (or lack of) again. Nothing worthwhile listening to since Humble and Fred on CFNY.

Ian
August 27, 2008 / 07:19

Irvine - Clement is the Minister of Health at the Federal level. This is all Dalton's baby. You'd sure hear him crying if the Tories started to take the lead on the Maple Leaf issue.

Steve Agony is still on the radio???

Just listen to Craig and Matt on the internet. 95.1 and 100.7 The Rock. No need to pay for satellite.

Why is that?

Otherwise it's the same songs over and over again and mindless chatter.

Satellite radio is the best thing ever! My new car has XM and we signed up right away.
I don't miss the chatter I don't miss the commercials, I do miss H&F but hey, I miss my first girlfriend too and she ain't coming back either! I like the variety and the 'blue' comedy.
Lucy , Fred and Ethyl for alt rock. All thats missing is a good news channel.
I'm never going back.

I have Sirius and I'm not complaining, they dont play the same songs every 2 hours, you dont have to sit through a shitload of comercials, and it's also unsencered too.

As far as toronto radio, The Edge is still somewhat ok, I still enjoy listenning to Alan Cross's Ongoing History Of New Music. Q107 is ok sometimes too but it has it flaws.
If I listen to any Toronto radio I'll listen to 977 HTZ FM, not based in Toronto but still in the area, they have a mix of new and classic rock, and I like the djs over there as well. They still over play shit, but not quite as bad.
That's radio though, most stations do over play the same stuff, doesn't matter if it's a rock station or country or top 40, they all do it.

First, Pettie is a "rat" who will take down anyone in the name of religion. Hopefully, Clemens will have a trial before his peers which means the jury will be composed of major league ball players including those who took drugs and those who did not. This will result in a hung jury. MLB and many players should be concern about Clemens taking his case to trial as MLB and some players are going to be "burned" badly. Hopefully this is the last year I have to listen to Pettie and his Texas "tange".....:-)

One could argue that truly great web designers will get business through word-of-mouth and recommendations (indeed, this is how i know the majority of my freelance designer colleagues get their business).

It looks like Amerie is switching up her style with her newest single called Outside Your Body. Ameriie's returning to her Korean roots in this single, melding R&B with K-pop. This futuristic song sounds great on my playlist and I really can't wait for her video to be released!
