Your kids comments jibe with my own, Freddie. My wife and I went there for a few days in 2005, and it just reinforced our opinion of how badly Toronto has fallen. The waterfront is spectacular - wide open, clean and usable. I also noticed the complete lack of graffiti and litter immediately. Wrigley Field is a must, by the way. Best ballpark anywhere - the atmosphere inside and out is incredible. The city just seems alive and vibrant. It's the first US city I have visited that I honestly could imagine myself living in without problem. I think a lot of Chicago's renaissance is due to the efforts of the Mayor, who has the kind of power that Miller is pushing for here - which gives me pause to think. In the right hands (Mayor Daley for instance) this type of power can effect tremendous positive changes. But can you imagine someone like Miller wielding it? Yikes.
August 6, 2008 / 11:43
You've convinced me Fred. I've always wanted to visit Chicago, but after reading your post, I've added it to the list of places I'd like to visit this year. First up for me will be the Art Institute of Chicago, which puts the AGO to shame...
August 6, 2008 / 13:22
I spend a lot of time there and the only comparison is that they they are called city's
Chicago is clean the hotels are plentiful a little on the expensive side but well worth it
you have to go to harry cary,s
It is the best steak in town
The only cautions is the house of blues it is the toronto equivalent of the CN tower you think this going to be great and then in the end it leaves you thinking is this it
Chicago's water front is amazing especially the navy pier that is a must see
Toronto you could learn a lot from how they changed there direction
August 6, 2008 / 13:57
chicago had close to 500 murders last year
August 6, 2008 / 14:26
T.O., give it time, Toronto will too. Miller's best idea so far is to ban legal handguns and close shooting ranges.
Fred you mentioned the condo issue. Miller wants to tear down the gardner to open up the water front... B*llshit. There are a million condos blocking the view, not the Garner. Right now you can walk under the Gardner to get to the lake, tear it down and you'll have to dodge traffic to get there.
The only saving grace is that maybe in 40 some odd years when the leases comes up for renewal on the Island they will not be renewed (thanks for nothing Barbara Hall). By then Miller will be gone (hopefully) and Toronto will have access to the water front via the Island.
I've been to Chicago, people who work in the offices take walks on the beach on their lunch hour. Try that in Toronto amongst all the condos.
August 6, 2008 / 15:18
Thanks for the statistic T.O. or should I say Mr. Miller.
Keep your head firmly planted up your ass.
August 6, 2008 / 18:58
hey freddie...
chicago...
well it brings back many memories for me for many different reasons. but mostly i suppose, it was the city where my dad attended medical school, and had a part time job at a local bar at night. (which, according to my dad, was well supplied with handguns the staff were trained to use)
my mom had travelled to chicago from rural iowa for her first modeling job away from home. she was a young one at that point, just 19, and she happened upon the bar my dad was working at on her first night in town.
well...
a few short years later, my brother mike and i were on the scene, my dad had finished school, and the gang moved to hamilton.
there were many reasons for that move naturally...but for my father (and this is almost 50 years ago now) chicago was a far to dangerous a place to raise a family.
but we always went back over the years, to visit my parents colletion of friends who had made the area thier home, and alwyas had a blast.
happy to here the kids enjoyed it...and when you and doll deceide to go...let me know!
i'll join you!
and invite my parents...
they could take us on a great tour of chicago 50 years ago!
cheers my friend!
my best to the tribe!
Kevin.
August 6, 2008 / 19:18
Having compared both cities... Chicago lookin' great by the lake.
Toronto... under Miller and his socialist moron-minions.... rapidly becoming the new mistake by the lake.
August 6, 2008 / 21:45
Freddie,
There's much truth in what you write. I used to live in Toronto and my memories of growing up there don't jive with what I see on my return visits. But having said that, aren't our experiences tainted because it's all new to us? You've not really been to Chicago so you didn't influence your kids' expectations. They were able to go and just enjoy themselves in a new environment. I felt the same way when I first visited New York City.
August 6, 2008 / 22:20
Why not take your white asses down to the south side and see how much better it is than Toronto.
August 6, 2008 / 22:52
Gee, thats a relevant comment, 50 Cent. Comparing a notorious AREA of a city to an entire city makes sense how exactly?
August 6, 2008 / 23:20
The 9mm 'gat' jammed in the back "waste" band of 50 Cent ('FIDDY SENSELESS') baggy pants must have discharged and blown his "brains" off.
You go, homie... and burn down another tenament/housing project.
August 6, 2008 / 23:40
I agree with you about the state of Toronto Fred and why it is that way but I have to say one thing - that if someone wishes to be a 'bum' and sit around on the sidewalk, I see it as their right. It might not make sense to you or I but if there is no harm principle involved, more power to 'em. It doesn't offend me nor do I associate with a city being dirty. If they are agressively begging or obstructing traffic, that's another matter. But if someone wants to be a 'bum' and be left alone and they're not really asking for anything, let 'em be. Toronto is sad. All the jobs have moved out to Mississauga and Scarborough or elsewhere and it's totally mismanaged, dirty and up sh!ts creek.
August 6, 2008 / 23:43
Hey 50 now that your career is over you have to hang out here or something?
August 7, 2008 / 13:04
I ain't hearing that Max. Ya'll sweat my ass for comparing the South Side but this white dude only goes to visit the nice places in Chi then disses Tdot.
Cracker, that's a gatt. Ya'll get cracker here to take a walk in the South Side, we'll see how he feel.
Freddie a bigot anyway. Most of Chicago is either brothers or Poles. Course the Poles are white so I guess that OK to F.P.
August 7, 2008 / 14:15
This just in: Due to his declining popularity and disc sales, hip hop “artist” 50 cent has changed his name to ‘Nickle’.
August 7, 2008 / 22:36
...and having been de-valued to a nickle... "fiddy senseless" also now has to pay a tariff to have his ebonics translated into ENGLISH that NORMAL people can understand.
Do you "gatt" it, fiddy-fuddy-muddle-duddy!?
So shut up... pull your pants up and get a real job.
August 7, 2008 / 23:01
"Read dis, fiddy senseless! Dy'd be no ghetto; mon, if we-be did dis!"
In either what you call t-dot, or Chicago.
(In English... do the crime, do the time.)
----------------
While addle-minded liberals call them 'redneck rants;' conservative values, personal responsibility, (and hard punishment for crimes), would certainly ensure there are NO crime-infested areas such as Jane & Finch, etc.
That recent Toronto Star article was a "Typical mamby-pamby Star article... "Oh, we should focus on, (throw more tax dollars at, to be honest), 'at-risk' youth, etc.," waaaaa-waaaaa-waaaaa.
The usual liberal sheep-blather and sheepish-shit way of dealing with crime. Bloody barking moonbats!
"At risk" youth (and adults) would certainly behave if the punishment for crime was: being shipped to a northern work-camp. No Ipods/computers/cell phones, gansta-rap videos, etc.
No more baggy pants with the 9mm 'gatt' jammed in the waistband, but rather PINK jail-style jumpsuits... the wearers of same to be put on You-Tube for all their would-be 'gangbanger' friends to see.
Top that off with a one-year stint in the armed forces; and those would-be crime kings & queens would learn some well-needed discipline and respect!"
-----------------
Otherwise; we'll just have to hope that 9mm 'gatt' jammed in the front of the waist (waste?) band goes off right between those baggy pant-legs... that would ensure a lot less fatherless offspring running rampant in areas such as Jane & Finch!
Ghetto-style birth control.

Right Uppercut:
The United States of America is redneck & conservative & it has more slums than anywhere else in the developed world. How come those "conservative" values didn't work down south? And I'm including the redneck slums (trailer parks) and the deep south where gun violence is common.
The USA has also incarcerated more youth than anywhere else in the free world so lots of those youth wear pink prison issue jump suits. Yet there is still crime
Guess it's a little more complex than you & the rest of the simpletons on this site make it out to be.
August 9, 2008 / 20:22
Right Uppercut: This is meandering away from Freddie's post about his kids visiting Chicago, but I had to comment on your suggestion that the misguided youth of today be placed in National Service and spend a year in the military. What makes you think that the Army (the Navy and Air Force wouldn't know what to do with them) would want a bunch of junior criminals, gang-bangers, drug dealers, and all around scum? There's an organization to deal with them called the Justice System. Do you really want to be depending on these kids for our national security? Give your head a shake.

Sitting on clearings and bush edges that have a bit of fresh sign will usually produce the goods. If you find such a clearing, figure out a vantage point where you can see most of it, or the bit where deer are entering it and sit downwind on dark/first light. On a freshly used trail, you can sit tight and wait. A deer will meander along it eventually. Just be careful not to scent the area up. I've watched stags trotting along with their noses on the ground like a dog, only to hit my ground scent and bound off into the bush! If you're bush hunting these trails, cruise along them slowly. If you hit fresh sign slow right down, stopping every 20-30 metres for a scan around you. Remember the slower the better. If you hit a nice sunny basin or area with browsing, sit back and watch it for half an hour to an hour. Just take your time. Also, remember when you get the opportunity to shoot your first "deer".....make sure thats what it is before you pull the trigger! Its easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment....so be safe, be sure. Just get out there...you'll get onto them eventually

Of course, you can capture people’s attention, but the time will come when another person also the same as your handbag. And for some people, it can be frustrating. Why not try the bag with his face, like a drawing print. That may be ridiculous, impossible, but with today’s printing technology, the design offers possible. You can build your own bag with a picture of his election to the proper pressure on the sides of the bag design.

This really is Shameful that we have Extremist Foreign Political People on our soil just after numerous years of hate towards our country. America should get free from the UN and teach all these extremists our thoughts of there idiotic ideology. Qaddafi, Ahmadinejad, Chavez, and much more have far to long been made welcome to the Sacred and Amazing land. I only say Enough is enough, Close up our doors to those Hateful Bastards and Say No longer to the U.N. Leave, your NOT nor have never been welcomed.
September 26, 2010 / 02:25
So not really on the same topic as your post, but I found this today and I just can't resist sharing. Mrs. Agathe’s dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next day, she told him, “I’ll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I’ll mail you the check. Oh, and by the way…don’t worry about my Doberman. He won’t bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT under ANY circumstances talk to my parrot!” When the repairman arrived at Mrs. Agathe’s apartment the next day, he discovered the biggest and meanest looking Doberman he had ever seen. But just as she had said, the dog simply laid there on the carpet, watching the repairman go about his business. However, the whole time the parrot drove him nuts with his incessant cursing, yelling and name-calling. Finally the repairman couldn’t contain himself any longer and yelled, “Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!” To which the parrot replied, “Get him, Spike!”
September 26, 2010 / 15:14
Genuinely Embarrassing that we let Extremist Foreign Political Characters on our soil immediately after years of hatred towards our country. The united states should escape the UN and educate all of these extremists what we think of there idiotic ideological background. Qaddafi, Ahmadinejad, Chavez, and many more have far to long been made welcome to this very Sacred and Awesome nation. I only say Enough is enough, Shut down our doors to Hateful Bastards and Say No to the U.N. Get out, your NOT nor have never been welcomed.

This is obtaining a bit a lot more subjective, but I significantly prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has far more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you swiftly see connected albums, songs, or other users associated to what you're listening to. Clicking on one particular of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will appear into view, allowing you to navigate close to exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" can be great fun, letting you discover other people with shared tastes and becoming good friends with them. You then can listen to some playlist produced depending on an amalgamation of what all your buddies are listening to, which can be enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy are going to be relieved to understand you are able to prevent the public from seeing your individual listening habits if you so select.
