C'mon Freddie. There are a lot of potentially hazardous industrial sites dangerously close to residential all over the city. Take Gas Stations for instance. they are "potentially" hazardous yet they are in residential areas.
I doubt that this place was a 2 bit operations run by morons that do not know anything about safety.
I doubt that when you used to drive or walk by the place people complained that there was a constant smell of propane in the air.
It was an unfortunate incident and in the future our government whether Municipal or Provincial will be aware of what kind of Zoning will be allowed in the city.

Well I do blame Mike F'in Harris for this mess. Thanks to him, amalgamation totally messed up every major city in Ontario. Smaller Provincial government to more costly, harder to manage, larger municipal government. Different by-laws/zoning being lumped into one big mess.

@GT, Sorry, I do not agree with you, if the site was operated safely, it would never have blown up. Period. There are no accidents, someone did something wrong. There are hundreds if not thousands of similar propane sites around the world that have not blown up, I am not saying none have ever blown up, but Sunrise was unable to operate this one for 3 years without a major disaster.
Also, gas stations are inherently safer sites due to the nature of the fuel, the method of storage and the wide spread use of the facilities which leads to better safety practices.
@Irvine, What? Nuclear plants in the 'burbs, if you are referring to Darlington, the closest residence is over 7.5KM away as the crow flies. Far enough in a disaster? No, but then Toronto isn't far enough away either.
If you refer to Pickering, check out the Pickering archives for aerial photos of the area that show there were no houses within 10 KMs of that site when construction ended.
Poor planning by the city allowed the encroachment there to where there are houses 5.2KMs away now. Still a normal safe distance, but really, in a disaster even Toronto is not safe at 41 KMs away.
Sunrise was less than 50m from homes, built before the facility was developed. Believe it or not, propane is more volatile and susceptible to accidents than any CANDU reactor.
This wasn't Harris' fault by a long shot, rules and regulations exist, someone didn't do their job and 2 people died as a result. Maybe it was a planner, maybe it was a manager that overruled a planner, they report to someone and the checks and balances were disregarded somewhere. Is it Miller's fault? Possibly if a City employee made that mistake, could be McGuinty's if it was a provincial employee that made the mistake.
No doubt an investigation will find something and eventually someone will get blamed and others will "get away with" something.

I live right in the area. The first explosion shattered all the windows in my house. I had no idea what was going on and I grabbed my son and said we got to get out of here. I tried the front door and could not open it. The house bent from the blast and the door was sealed. We went out the back way and got into my pickup. As we were sitting in the driveway, another explosion where a massive fireball came like a wave between the houses. I never saw anything like it. Sitting in the truck with the windows up, my son looks at me and says I think I am burnt and I felt the same way. Our faces were hot. I backed out of the driveway and as I was leaving the area people were climbing in the back of my pickup. I drove slower so everyone could jump in. I still have not been back to my house, or whats left of it.
