Scruff Connors Is Not Dead

August 8, 2008 @ 12:15

Shock waves went through the radio world last night when the moderator of a certain yellow radio board reported that Scruff Connors may have died.

Scruff has had some health issues over the past couple years, including cancer, so it wasn't that difficult to believe when someone e-mailed me with the news they had read on the Southern Ontario / Western New York Radio-TV Forum.

I received the news late last night, and to be honest it bummed me out, but before I wrote something about Scruff's passing I thought I better confirm it, just to make sure.

It's usually what you do before writing about a guy dropping dead.

This morning I phoned Jamie Lott, who works at Corus Toronto. She's a good friend of Scruff's and she'd have all the details.

And according to Jamie, here are the details.

Not only is Scruff "not" dead, he's very much alive. He's recently had more surgery, but he's definitely on the rebound and his cancer is in remission.

As a matter of fact, he feels so bloody good he's adopted the trailer life. He lives in Bowmanville but he spends weekends in a trailer he bought at a park not far from his home.

And according to Jamie it's going to be a significant weekend for Scruff.

In recognition of his son Tyler's birthday, who's well into his 20's, Scruff has arranged to have a elephant shipped from the Bowmanville Zoo to the trailer park. Just for the hell of it. And the reason he can do this, is because he won a hundred grand in Lotto 649 on Wednesday night.

So there you have it, Scruff Connors is not dead.

He's alive and well and living east of the city where he's renting an elephant after winning a lottery.

Meanwhile, if you miss Scruff and you'd like to hear his voice enjoy this interview I did with him back in January.

Scruff Connors came to Toronto in 1980 as morning man at Q-107 and stayed there until 1985.

After stops in Philadelphia, St. Catherines and Edmonton, he returned to Q-107 in 1993 for just over a year.

His career then took him to Winnipeg until 1995 when he began a forced sabbatical that lasted the better part of six years.

In 2001 Scruff became an original cast member of MOJO Radio where he stayed until the summer of 2005.

Since then, it's been a tough time for Scruff Connors. He's battled various health issues and undergone several operations.

This interview isn't so much about the history of Scruff Connors the disc jockey, it's more about the future of a popular radio guy who pissed in the eye of the grim reaper.

Are you kiddin' me? I could not think of anyone better suited to win a chunk of change (even though a hundred grand won't buy much)than the Scruffer. I can't tell y'all how happy I am to hear he's not only alive, but Kickin"!

Leave it to little yellow boards... always such an accurate and jovial place that is... ;-)

Freddie, that would have been sad news indeed, and thank goodness Scruff is still kickin. Before I discovered you and Howard back in the late 80's/early 90's, I was a regular Scruff listener when he was on the 97.7 HTZ FM show in St. Catherines. Him and Joe Kahil (SP?) They made a great team there for a few years and I have always liked hearing Scruff since, hes a great guy with a goofy sense of humor and always tended to keep things exciting on the air.

Definitely good news, last I heard of Scruff he was pretty well out financially and was living with a good friend and her husband I believe in Port Hope.
Hope he keeps some change this time to retire on as he has been known to drop a few bucks indiscriminately.
He kind of has the Rompin Ronnie Hawkins philosophy, "90% of my money I've spent on wine women and a good time and the other 10% I wasted"

My friend Stan and I interviewed Scruff when he was at WYSP in 1986. We still both listen to the tapes we made of scruff's show. We are very happy he is still alive and well

Scruff was one of the most entertaining radio guys in a generation. I used to catch MOJO Vancouver here in the AM and Scruff on-line from T.O. later. The guy, with his wicked sense of humor really made my day.
Sincerely hope he's keeping the nasty stuff at bay.
Wishing him all the very best.

Thanks everyone for your kind remarks. Yes, I'm still kickin' and about to leave for Cuba for a couple of weeks. Keep well. Be happy.
Best wishes, Scruff

I'm sure the Scruffer had a helluva time in Cuba, Just hope he booked his trusty stallion "Rusty" into a decent joint for those two weeks. His faithful 'companion' deserves it.
Keep on keepin' on Scruff!
