Trouble For Toronto

July 10, 2008 @ 09:34

When you get right down to it, I guess the citizens of Toronto should be glad that David Miller has announced he’ll run again for mayor in 2010.

It gives them lots of time to figure out a way to prevent another victory.

When asked on Tuesday whether he’d defend his crown in the next municipal election, Miller offered nothing more than a “yes” but it was enough to sound off the alarms and let every know that Toronto needs to be saved from this guy beyond the current term.

The city is dirty, mismanaged and carries a staggering three billion dollar debt.

Since Miller has become mayor you can’t point to one progressive or beneficial thing he’s done He’s blind socialist who’s leading Canada’s greatest city into the abyss and somebody’s got to stop him.

Toronto needs a realist. A straight shooter who will run the city the way it needs to be run.

Like a business.

Fred, you're right. Toronto is that kind of City. Miller is no good.

Fred, you don't even live in Toronto. Blog about Brampton. Or at least suggest some solutions instead of throwing rocks.

Mike - he did suggest a solution. Elect a realist who will run the City like a business. Did you miss that part?

I don’t live in Toronto either but I believe Miller is the right mayor for Toronto. A city filled with left leaning, loud social engineering types who think the greatest weekend of the year is ‘Pride’ weekend deserve this guy. I use quotations because quite frankly these people have nothing to be ‘proud’ of.

So Max, electing a realist who will run the City like a business will solve everything? You are obviously beyond your depth here. How do you deal with the existing unions, for instance? You can't just fire them all...the city would be in court for years, wasting more money. And, you can run some aspects of a city like a business, but there are also many social service commitments that a city like Toronto has (that many other cities do not have) that can not be run like a business. I'm not saying I am a Miller fan, it is just a more complicated issue than most of the posters on Fred's blog seem to make it out to be.

Mike: Please accept my suggestions even though I’m just a poster on Fred’s blog.

You’re right about the unions, we can’t fire them BUT we can start to outsource some of the work whether they like it or not. Going forward any union negotiations have to give more power to the city and less to the damn unions (I’m sure mike from Lowville will respond now).

Another way to save is simply decrease the expense budgets of the 45 councilors – they receive about a $54000 tax free benefit. I would also reduce the number of counselors (all of these suggestions have been put forward by Rob Ford). I’m sure you don’t like him as he’s a common sense guy who only wants best for this misabrlne city.

Thirdly, I would stop all the grants that go to needless organizations. Any group with a leftist agenda residing south of Bloor St qualify for grants from this NDP group (Miller & his cronies).

That’s it, what do you think Mike?

Errr...Argie? Some of us residents of Toronto dislike Mayor Miller intensely. Since he's taken over, the streets are filthier than ever, exterior walls are vandalized in the name of "art", and the "entertainment district" has become a shooting gallery. I would think that wanting these things fixed would make us right-leaning. And some of us dislike Pride weekend for no other reason than it is a huge pain in the arse.

Argue, you call me a lefty all the time and I just said I don't like Miller. So did Trish. And excuse us, we actually live in Toronto. Fancy that.

As for any parades you don't like, go elsewhere in the city that weekend. Suck it up and get over it.

Mike...businesses have unions too you know. The way you deal with them to not to kow tow to them but take them on. The point of running the city like a "business" is not to abandon the social service commitments but to look rationally at the manner in which they are delivered to determine whether there is waste etc.

Also, there are many services offered by the city which are not mandated by the province. Those need to be examined to determine what benefit, if any, is being realized in relation to the resources.

Max
July 10, 2008 / 19:23

Mike - what Cony said. And thanks for pointing out to us morons that running a city the size of Toronto might be complicated. I would never have thought that. Thanks for the amazing contribution.

Miller is a total disaster. Every Thursday morning Oakley has Rob Ford on to list the unbelievable waste and abuses going on under his watch. Sure, Ford is a loudmouth right-winger, dead-set against the Miller regime, but he does his homework, and if anything he reports was libelous, his Worship's lawyers would be all over him. Know what? In spite of the incredible inefficiency, the people of Toronto will re-elect this dick-head next election. Why is that? Can anyone answer?

Argie
July 10, 2008 / 21:26

Trish: I agree Miler is an awful mayor - the worst this city has seen in decades. BUT unfortunately the majority of voters keep voting this clown in so as they say ‘the voters get what they deserve.’

For your and other rational people’s sake, I hope he loses but I’m afraid he’s going to win again.

I wouldn't vote for him again --- but in his defense .... Mr. Miller goes to work each day. We may not agree with the way he does it - but let's not sit around on our couches or patios, drink a few beer and talk about how awful other people are.

I guess if we all had lot's of time to not really do much ... we'd all be able to focus more on the failings of others.

It would be interesting to hear what Mr. Miller's comments were about critisism such as this - but I would expect he's probably more interested in trying to do his job.

Over the past year he has accomplished a lot - it may not be what some people like, but it's a heck of a lot more than other people have done ( other than write about how awful other people are ... )

Yes; Miller has 'accomplished' a lot; depending upon how you define accomplishment.

My opinion... (an old wise saying), "If you voted for Miller, you can't sh*t here, because your a-hole is at city hall.

Give it up Miller. Using "Ben" as an alias doesn't fool anybody. Get back to work.

Simple fact, you get what you vote for... Glad I live in Mississauga, with Hazel running the show. That woman is 5 ft tall, but Miller can only look up to her. Miller can only dream of election results of 96% like she gets.

I live in the "city" All I know is this mayor don't give a crap about anything north of Bloor. Dufferin and Eglinton are fallin apart...
This guy only cares about the people living in condo's in what use to be our waterfront. If this is his vision of a livable city count me out. We need a mayor who will take care of the city including every part that is not "fashionable".

My vote would go to Doug Halliday.

If only Ben Kerr were still alive. Vote for him.

Ben
July 11, 2008 / 23:40

Okay - I apologize.

I guess it confuses me that people who don't live in Toronto, and don't work, would actually appear to be so angry about someone that does.

If you don't like the job someone is doing you can:

a/ Lead
b/ Follow
c/ Get out of the way

Seems to be that by posting a picture of a mayor, and then writing comments about him does none of the above.

Let's lead by example - let's look at the good that has been done in Toronto. For one thing, over the past four years our radio stations seem to have started to cut out the underperformers and replaced them with people who actually put in an honest days work.

Hard to take? Maybe - but come on ... the mayor is the one who is still employed in the same job after 8 years. And this person is elected by the people of Toronto. More than I can say for some....

Max
July 15, 2008 / 17:29

So let me get this straight Ben. You don't ever engage in critical conversations about elected officials? You're a blind follower of whoever is in power regardless of whether you agree with them or not, right?

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
