Jim Richards In The Day Time

I’m embroiled in my own little personal dilemma right now. It deals with the ten to noon slot on two radio stations.

As you know, I’m a long time friend and huge fan of Mike Stafford who does the ten to noon shift at am 640.

Mike is simply the best, smartest and most eloquent talk radio host in Toronto, and since Stafford moved from afternoon drive at am 640, there’s been no competition for the guy between ten and noon. None.

Now, it’s a bit different. My second favourite talk radio host is Jim Richards and since Leslie Roberts decided to concentrate on what he does best, CFRB has temporarily given Jimberly the ten to noon slot.

Talk about refreshing. Exactly what Toronto needs in the day time. More fun, more irreverence, more attitude and can you imagine, more entertainment.

Less stuffiness and predictability.

Outside of Stafford and Richards and Oakley and McCown, Toronto is light years behind the United States when it comes to talk radio. We’ve got to loosen up in this country.

But with Richards sitting in the ten to noon slot I get the feeling things might be slowly changing.

For Jim’s sake, I hope it’s permanent, and the job doesn’t go to somebody like Ken Shaw or Gord Martineau or Lloyd Robertson.

Problem is, from a personal standpoint Jimberly getting the slot would create a situation for me.

I’d feel guilty as hell not giving my full attention to Stafford.

I agree with you Fred..

I've been listening to Jim since he was on the Fan. He does a great job.

Also, I strongly second that those four guys are by far and away the best hosts in the city.

Stafford: He is at his best when he is allowed to express his humour and off the wallness. Unfortunatley he sounds like he is severely restricted by the"its political correctness gone mad" agenda of the tiresome am640 (come back Mojo).

Jim Richard: The funniest and sacky guy on radio.

John Oakley: just another clever right wing moaner, sounds like a drunk at a bar at closing time. Ok we know your a conservative, now just start being funny and informative. -BORING!!!

McCown: Yeah we know already, he "tells it like it is". Still better than windy Bill Waters though!!

I've been living in the Excited States for over 4 years now. One thing I miss is the style of talk radio in Toronto.

Down here talk radio is political radio. It's dominated by national content like Rush and Dr. Laura, with little to no local insight at all. When there is local content, its still radically right or left wing. The only decent talk is NPR.

While I agree with your comments about Mike and Jim being refreshing. I have to say be careful what you wish for. Talk radio here is so predictable its sad. They never take on the broad topics and subjects you get from Toronto talk. If you need American style talk, just pick up a Sirius satellite. You'll be back over to 640, 1010, and The Fan in a nano second.

Good observations Freddie and The Witness. When I used to live in Toronto I listened to both of those guys as well. Richards is great - I just think many people don't "get" him - including Steve Sofa, his boss at CFRB. The reason there are so few notable talk show hosts in Toronto is that, as much as their employers will tell them: "We want opinions, be controversial!" and so on, few of said employers actually have the balls to stand behind someone who is opinionated or has twisted sense of humour or is in any way too different from the norm. People who we think of as "controversial" in T.O. would be pretty bland in NYC or here in London for that matter. I think, essentially, we (Canadians) are just "too nice" to be really outspoken. That's not a criticism, believe me. When I see/hear some of the nasty stuff that's written/spoken here in mainstream outlets, I miss that "Canadian-ness". just my two cents (or pence, or whatever).

I don’t believe it’s a First Amendment issue either. However, I do believe it’s a Fifth Amendment issue and a Tenth Amendment issue and at most, this should be a state matter

I am a very nervous flyer. During a trip from California to Indiana, it didn't help that my connecting flight from Denver was delayed twice because of mechanical problems.
