Waste Of Time

June 19, 2008 @ 09:51

An anti-spanking bill that was passed by the Canadian Senate yesterday, definitely puts us on a slippery slope.

How involved should the government become with parenting?

The bill targets corporal punishing or spanking, but its designed and written such a way that interpretation will probably cause loads of anguish in the courts, not to mention the time it will waste.

How can you pass a bill that prohibits spanking?

The bill doesn’t outlaw the practice completely, allowing for certain levels of spanking, but when kids start running to police when they’ve been spanked, or when do-gooders report anyone who lays a hand on their kid, who’s going to determine the threshold without a video tape replay.

Here’s part of the wording: The bill adopted by the Senate allows parents, teachers or those acting for a parent to use "reasonable force other than corporal punishment, but only in three specific circumstances: preventing or minimizing harm to the child or another person, preventing the child from engaging in conduct of a criminal nature, or preventing the child from engaging in excessively offensive or disruptive behaviour."
A parent, for example, could not spank the child as a routine disciplinary measure.

Wow. Talk about a convoluted pile of crap.

Hopefully when it gets before Parliament, common sense will kick in and they’ll throw it out.

What happens if a parent spanks their kid while smoking a cigarette?

If Mayor Miller had only banned children when he had the chance, this wouldn't be an issue.

If people are spanking their kids in 2008, maybe the gov't should step in.

Time outs, loss of televison privilages, and so many other forms of punishment work fine.

I don't think the Canadian gov't should support spanknig. It's also another law that can't really be enforced, like the smoking in cars thing. Still, they are coming from the right place, I think.

Spanking is lazy parenting. I wouldn't even spank a pet. Ever.

Haven't we all..? and as much as I don't like Miller, it was Jane Pitfield who wanted to ban people from the city.. namely the homeless.. what CHOICE we had this past election.. between two imcompetant LOSERS..

Pitfield should have been mayor. The people of Toronto voted and the majority got the loser they wanted.

If there’s a way to eliminate the homeless from the streets of Toronto, I’m all for it. I’ve previously stated my plan so I won’t bore you.

"Argie, shouldn't you be listening to AM640 or something?" Good one Jason. I thought the same thing, LOL! I think his solution was something like, put then all in jail or shoot them. Argue for Mayor!! Then rename Toronto New Berlin.

Mike: I didn’t suggest shooting them BUT now that you’ve brought it up – ya know its not a bad idea.

If "left wing" policies are responsible for the high number of homelessness, then how do you explain Alberta?

We're as far right as you go in Alberta and out here Conservative means "Centrist". The far right are the Wild Rose Party and their supporters that believe in "More Alberta, Less Ottawa".

On that subject Argie, ever notice you don't hear much whining from out here in West Canada? That's because in Ontario "right wing" means loud, obnoxious whiner. In Alberta it means a person that shuts up and gets out and does it.

And this is yet another reason why this generation is going to become spoiled thugs! The previous generations spanked their children as a form of consiquence. Let's face it, timeouts and sending them to thir room is supposed to be an alternative? Go ahead, ban the practice, but don't cry when our legal system is full of juvenile delinquints that have no idea what punishment is about.

Yeah because a kid that gets spanked will never grow up wanting to smack or harm someone else. No, they will never develop agression problems from their parents archaic parenting skills. In fact, if everyone would just go around smacking everyone else, the world would be a less violent place.
