Saved But Not Heard

June 10, 2008 @ 08:39

No matter what angle you look at it, CBC botched the “hockey theme” controversy by letting it slip away.

The "theme" will still be around because CTV stepped up and bought it on behalf of TSN which has a wide range of hockey to offer next season.

However, if you’re a Leaf fan, and have always associated the "hockey theme" with your beloved blue and white, the association is over. If you’re the type of hockey fan who tends to watch Leaf games, and few others, then the hockey theme is pretty well out of your life.

The Leafs are seen almost exclusively on the CBC Saturday nights, and for the next six years, on Rogers Sportsnet. Only a handful of Leaf games will show up on TSN next season, and they’ll be mid-week games.

In other words, even though the “hockey theme” has been saved, it won’t mean much to Leaf fans; because you’re hardly gonna hear it.

Hey, I admire CTV for coming in and securing a deal with the rights holders, but once you get beyond the business end of it, it’s still going to take some getting used to.

The “theme” is a Saturday night thing and that’s how Canadians came to love it.

On Saturday nights, the average viewing audience for Hockey Night in Canada is upwards of a million Canadians. Compare that to mid-week games featuring the Leafs and it’s cut in half. Compare that to mid-week games “not” involving the Leafs and you can cut it in half again.

The hockey theme lives on, but not many people are going to hear it.

Especially Leaf fans.

I’m happy with CBC’s decision not to pay the ransom demanded by the composer’s agents. They obviously assumed the CBC would willfully waste the taxpayer’s money on this irrelevant piece of music just to keep the masses happy. If CTV/TSN want to waste their shareholders’ money they can go ahead and do that.

At the end of the day HNIC will not lose a single viewer due to changing of the opening 30 seconds of music. Times change folks, move on. Just as a comparison if Monday night Football dropped their opening music, how many Americans would care or even notice?

Get your facts straight there Freddie...TSN just signed a new deal with the NHL and they'll have 17 Leafs' games next season, more than any other team.

Dear kwl

You're right.. the theme will be heard on Leaf games 17 times midweek.

That does compare with almost 30 times on Saturday nights.

Forgive me.

C'mon Fred, it's not 'almost 30.' CBC will have 23 Leafs games next year...it's not that big a difference.

I think there's more to this story than is being released.

I wonder, and I'm just wondering here, if there were two different negotiations taking place. One with CTV offering a hunk of cash, and the other being the CBC trying to renew.

The music publisher would be hung out to dry if they'd just said no to CBC and taken CTV's much richer offer. Canadian national anthem and all the other crap.

I wonder if that's why CBC had such a hard time negotiating this deal, and why at every turn, their attempts to reconcile, including hiring lawyers and negotiators to do so, were shunned.

This way the publisher and author get a bucket of cash, and the CBC law suit remains in the courts.

But I'm a cynic.

I think what you're overlooking is that this is the first step towards CTV claiming hockey night in canada.

Their next move? Get Bob Cole.

Argie

James:
CTV wanted HNIC badly but were oubid by CBC which paid a mint to keep it (about a year ago). HNIC is a money maker and currently the only thing that provides a profit for the CBC. CTV knows this and would love to one day get it.

I just wish Bob Cole would quit for the love of God!!!

It's a shame that this stupid beloved theme will no longer be heard on HNIC but I commend the CBC for not being forced into overpaying for the rights like they did with Ron MacLean and Don Cherry a few years ago. I seem to recall that composer trying to milk extra money from the CBC last time around too. She's must be the greatest one-hit wonder of all time! History has shown that Leafs fans (myself included) will still tune in... we're not that smart!

Please just get rid of Bob Cole.

I consider this yet another reason to push the CBC away from the taxpayer tit and let them go it alone.

Since the one of CBC's mandate is to help perserve and premote "Canadian Culture" and they let this little gem slip away, should be reason more than enough to put them on a iceberge and let them float out to sea.

On a more positve note, it was mentioned on 640am that since the HNIC theme is 40 years old and the last time the Leafs won the "Cup" was 41 years ago ... just maybe the jinks has now been lifted.

"They obviously assumed the CBC would willfully waste the taxpayer’s money on this irrelevant piece of music just to keep the masses happy."

Dude, have you seen the rest of the CBC line up? Hang on, I have to pause my recordings of Pit Pony, Emily of New Moon, and Wind at My Back to laugh my ass off at the thought of the CBC being fiscally responsible.

Oh wait, since those gems of television programming aren't on any more, I guess I'll be pausing my Air Farce, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy episodes...

I don't have a problem with CTV\TSN buying it. I just don't like the spin they put on the whole deal that they saved it for Canadian hockey fans.

Tell the truth, you just (rightfully) screwed your competition.

Max
June 10, 2008 / 15:32

Boomer - exactly. They bought it so CBC couldn't have it. Nothing more, nothing less.

I can't believe how emotional we get over this stuff. 40 years is a long time to have kept a theme song in place anyway - why not change it? Canadians attach themselves to the most trivial things. There's so many important issues going on daily that the average Joe on the street couldn't have an intelligent conversation about - but mess with our "Timmie's" or "HNIC" and watch the sh1t hit the fan.

Bob Cole isn't that bad, it is pretty much time for him to go though, he's been there too long.
I would like to see Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson get that spot, I think those guys do a better job.

What are the odds of CTV making a run at trying to get Hockey night In CAnada?

Jason Barr
June 11, 2008 / 06:11

The CBC is a joke. They should have cancelled all of those other ridiculous shows like The Air Farts, The Border, Sophie, The hour etc.( I got these from their website, they were not top of mind) and spent the money on the only good show they produce; HNIC. They should replace Bob Cole though. He's way too incompetent now. He called Vesa Toskala Felix Potvin this past season. Give him and Cliff Fletcher a double room at the old folks home. Sorry.

Argie

Jason: Cole is too much. Didn’t he describe the 1999 Stanley Cup winning goal as being scored by Dennis Hull when in fact it was scored by his much younger nephew Brett?

You have to bleed Maple Leaf blue to be able to listen to a period called by Cole, let alone a whole game. His time is over. I just hope Hughson doesn't get pressured into becoming such a pathetic homer.

Steal

Hughson already is a homer...for the Canucks.

phil
June 11, 2008 / 10:27

Hey Lew, nothing wrong with being a pathetic homer as long as you know who is playing. In Cole's case I am not sure he was aware of who was on the ice.

LEW
June 11, 2008 / 10:30

You are correct Steal, however Hughson was calling Canuck games to a regional audience - so there is an expectation
Cole is calling a game to a National audience - which comes with different expectations.
Hughson, even when he shows favourtism is not in the same class as Cole - at least with Hughson you are aware that there are two teams playing the game.

The CBC by doing this has damaged it's own image. They should have paid the so-called "ransom" of a woman who is claerly just mkaing sure their is money for her estate. She wrote the song, and that's her perogative. The "ramsom" was worth every penny, the CBC are idiots! This will damage their reputation. Just wait and see.

I'm watching the NHL awards right now and CBC just played Stompin Tom's The Hockey Song and something just didn't seem right. It just didn't seem to fit.
I'm starting to think that CBC should've payd the money and keep the Hockey Night In Canada theem song.

Oh well, I'll just have to be happy with having it as the ringtone on my cel, I was gonna change it for the summer but dont think I'm going to do that now. lol
Hey at least we'll still get to hear it on TSN.
