Everyone involved in this mess shoulders blame for not being able to read the writing on the wall. The workers should hardly have been shocked at this announcement. The Ontario Government should have maybe thought about the future of gas guzzling vehicles a long time ago, before handing out millions and millions to GM. And finally, what the hell is with the North American auto industry - the rest of the auto world is busy producing hybrids, and Ford and GM pin their hopes on cranking out behemoth SUVs and trucks? I see Ford has hired a few hundred more workers to produce the "Flex", which once again is not the most fuel efficient of vehicles. How long befor ethe bloom is off the rose for the demand for that vehicle?
June 9, 2008 / 11:03
Buzz Hargrove is as much to blame as GM.
Striking and occupying GM buildings will keep the workers attention away from the fact that the union has no contingency plan for the inevitable situation that now confronts the North American Automobile market.
I feel for those who will lose their jobs, but once the GM workers see that the government and GM will no longer just throw money at this sector, they will turn on Buzz and his union cohorts.
Sad thing is that after all is said and done, Hargrove will still have a job and a platform from which he can blame everybody else for these lay-offs and the lay-offs that will follow.
June 9, 2008 / 11:09
"GM closures were inevitable
High gas prices causing truck demand to drop"
Yes, this is true, but, GM could build, greener, smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles in that plant. That's why people are so pissed off over the closures/job losses. The impact here is huge. For every job lost at that plant, three will be lost in the related parts industry. For every job lost at that plant, three are lost in the local economy. (Service sector)
On the Ford Flex,(to answer Max)only 80K to be built for this modal year. Not high production numbers. The Lincoln version MKT 40K. The Edge and the MKZ are the major product at that plant. About 230K to 270K a year total production, Flex,MKT,Edge and MKZ.
June 9, 2008 / 11:23
Nigel Trousershrapnel, how can you say Hargrove is to blame? He is just the President of the CAW. The members make the decisions. The problem is, the members have NO control over what decisions the company makes on what it builds, or anything else that involves management and running the company!
The union has a contingency plan for the situation that now confronts the North American Automobile market. It's called having an Auto Policy. Something this country sorely needs after the loss of the Auto Pact. Handed down by the WTO. All because Japan complained. Funny, they have import restrictions, so does China. Hmm. Are you listening Harper?
June 9, 2008 / 11:25
Regarding GM's decision to produce gas guzzlers – those were the only vehicles they were selling. Even if they had concentrated more on hybrid/fuel efficient cars the majority of consumers would still have flocked to the Japanese and German imports. The domestics identified their strengths and it was building pick-ups, minivans and SUV which all happen to use a lot of gas.
GM, Ford & Chrysler’s biggest mistake was not downsizing years ago which at the time would have laid off thousands of staff but the companies would have been in much better shape today. That huge mistake coupled with the sharp increase in fuel has screwed these companies.
Of course like most I lay a lot of the blame on the unions – they will never learn. All we have to do is to look and Honda & Toyota who build sound reliable cars in Canada with non-union workers. That’s why I own a Honda and would never buy a union made car. Unions have outlived their use – as has Mike from Lowville.
June 9, 2008 / 11:42
Argue, blow me. If you knew what you were talking about it would amaze me. The non-union workers at Honda and Toyota are non-union for a reason, the company pays the workers near union wages with descent benefits. Working conditions, thanks to unions fighting for those things in the past. If you say unions outlived their usefulness that tells me you don't have a clue. Keep buying your Honda's, keep shopping at Wal-Mart, keep supporting foreign investors and Mulroney's statement after the FTA was signed will hold true. "You won't recognize Canada"
June 9, 2008 / 11:55
No thanks Mike I would rather not.
Spare me your union propaganda - that only works on your fellow grade 10 dropout flunky trashy union brothers. God it was humorous seeing those slugs on the news protesting outside the head offices. Do these people really believe someone in the real world would hire them? Probably not, which is why they’re so desperate to keep their cushy underserved job?
June 9, 2008 / 12:18
The Argue has spoken, again ignorant to the facts. To work for the Domestic Auto makers you need minimum grade 12, college or university preferred. You must get above average on a 3 hour test the rivals entry exams. Then you must prove yourself worthy to a panel in a lengthy interview process. You would not stand a chance!!!! I love how people spout off, thinking they know it all, much like you do on all these related Blogs. Not having walked in the shoes of the people but you have all the answers. Whats your next gig Argue? http://www.psychicnikki.com/predictions.html
June 9, 2008 / 12:46
Mike from Lowville and Argie, you both make some valid points.
Although I am not a union lover, I do see their need in certain industries, otherwise a lot more people would work for $8.00/hour on which nobody can live on.
Unfortunately, to call a strike at this point would only play into management's hands. They would love not to have to pay these workers plus not building up their inventory!!!!!
The other thing which really pisses me off is the salary and perks "Mr." Wagoner, CEO, received last year, which is supposedly way more than the year before, even though the stock prices are in the toilet.
One last thing Mike, since you seem to know a lot about GM, can you verify the fact that all the workers at that plant were offered retraining programs, long before this happened, yet basically nobody took up the offer?? This statement comes from a GM Oshawa worker who phoned into the Oakley show a few days ago.
June 9, 2008 / 12:50
Wow – those ‘workers’ (notice the quotations around ‘workers’) have grade 12 diplomas, some even with a University degree??? They sure don’t look or sound like it.
June 9, 2008 / 12:51
Lost in all this discussion is the fact that GM will decide where to build their product, in this case the Oshawa Truck product goes to Mexico...that 3rd world shithole that Freddie loves to slam. Oshawa Truck was in the process of building HYBRID trucks and now that is lost to Canada (not just Oshawa) forever. Corporate greed sends the worlds number one truck producing plant's product offshore, "Wa-goner" gets his $15MIL Bonus, and the workers lose...bottom line. By the way, GM is raking in the dough, thats why they never publish Canadain Operations Financial results. Ironicaly, the Truck plant received another Best Plant award just one day after the closure was announced HUNGRY? OUT OF WORK? EAT YOUR IMPORT!!
June 9, 2008 / 13:01
“HUNGRY? OUT OF WORK? EAT YOUR IMPORT!!”
Another bumper sticker issued by the brotherhood, Danno?
In a perfect world it would be nice if we only bought Canadian made products. The world aint perfect and me, you and everyone else buy foreign whether its cars, food, clothes, electronics or whatever. There’s no avoiding it.
My car is Canadian made and best of all non-union made.
June 9, 2008 / 16:14
Mike from Lowville once again fails on the facts.
The biker crowd picture published last week in the paper when the Oshawa shift let out explained exactly why the North American auto industry is in deep trouble.
The Oshawa, Oakville and Bramalea plants are filled with uneducated "white" line workers who check their feet for shoe damage and get pissy when the company suggests anything that will improve productivity. These workers have been so indoctrinated with CAW and prior UAW bullshit that a reasonable suggestion by management will be met with a crapload of union grievance.
Meanwhile these rednecks work next to new Canadians who think nothing of putting in an extra 15 or 20 hours of overtime because they have basic needs to send home like money for food, shelter or the occasional bribe to local police.
Farewell these salad days of in-ground pools, high fences and all the xenophobic nonsense that the unskilled $85,000 auto worker made to live in their fantasy land.
Here's a clue: stick your head outside your house now and then and find out what's really going on out in the working world.
June 9, 2008 / 20:30
SAD FACT OF THE WEEK: Dozens of the GM workers in Oshawa are from St. Catharines. They have been riding a bus at 5am to Oshawa, just to keep their job after the St. Catharines plant closed years ago.
Unions do have their place, BUT somebody please explain to me, regargless of education or background, why a person who bolts on the right-side fenders of a truck deserves , full benefits, pension and an outrageous income. Its simply attrition, they pushed the market too far, now the market pushes back. 5 years from now, as example, the plant gets retro-fitted and a new crop starts at less wage, less benefit etc.
June 9, 2008 / 20:51
Just a little note....it does not help their cause when the radio interviews the wives of GM workers complaining that they will not be able to have their bi weekly manicure or put their daughters into competitive figure skating this fall because of the recent lay offs. Sadly there are people who cannot afford heat for their homes (some without homes at all) or food for their family. There are people who do not care about the price of gasoline because they cannot afford a vehicle to put it in. Lay offs are always disturbing when ANY business decides to close. If you are fortunate enough to have air time to express your VALID concerns, do not waste it by complaining about losing 'frills' that most people hard working people have never been able to afford.

Why can't G.M. become employee owned? You people seem to forget who is the number 1 donater to charities? Obviously you've never heard of the ripple effect? So how many families will be affected? And will your town become a ghost town? People please think about this stuff.

June 9, 2008 / 22:48
*chuckles*
But I thought the auto industry was in bed with the oil industry? Hasn't that always been the theme of the misinformed ?
The Union isn't the problem here, the problem is the short sighted management that didn't take the time that we wouldn't live in a world of cheap disposable energy forever. Opps.
To Mike from Lowville
What you are witnessing is the beginning of the end for the auto industry. The era of cheap energy has ended and it's going to take out the airlines & the auto industry. The airline industry has shed 14 000 jobs. The auto industry is now following. The era of cheap energy has arrived
And in Ontario, the decimation of the economy has begun. A province that's spent 20 years focused on cars, primping itself in the mirror of how "wonderfully powerful" it is can now face the reality that 1 in 6 jobs in it's economy is built around cars built by the Big 3. If old Dalton wants to hand out money I'd be handing it out to wind power companies because in the future they'll be alot more of them then cars on the road.
Welcome to the beginning of Peak Oil. Ya'll laughed last year when I said on this forum that oil would top 100 bucks a barrel. And you can bet that very soon it'll surpass 150. And then 200. And speculation, US greenbacks, etc aside...demand is VERY tight. And nearly 2/3's of all oil producing nations are now in permanent decline.
June 10, 2008 / 08:22
From a different angle, did anybody catch the hypocrisy with the opposition parties? In particular Jack Layton who was down in Oshawa when the union protest was going on? Layton and Dion gripe how the Tories are not living up to Kyoto, and that they shoud implement a plan to meet Kyoto immediately, but then they gripe that the Tories should do something to save the NA Auto industry.
The reason the North American Auto industry is tanking is becaue gas is high and as a result people are turning to more fuel efficient cars, which by definition are better for green house gas emissions. IF the opposition wants Kyoto ASAP in particular for the US to adopt it, closures like the GM Plant in Oshawa are just the tip of the iceberg.
If you want to transission our industry to a more ecological friendly one, well this is what will have to be paid. You want to make an ommlette, you're going to have to break some eggs.
June 10, 2008 / 14:40
If anybody remembers anything Irvine wrote a year ago, get a prescription.
And his peak oil prediction came from...where...Rosie, Charlie Sheen? Those World Trade buildings were made of high tensile unobtanium! Oh, wait, he read something on Wikipedia.
I thought Irvine had been captured and enveloped in a high protein gel to keep him alive but hardly sentient.
June 10, 2008 / 14:48
Lou: With Irvine it wasn’t that complicated. He was only doing time in the clink. Not sure what for.
June 10, 2008 / 15:40
Irvine - you might have to draw me a picture or something, because I might be slow - but about this statement: "And nearly 2/3's of all oil producing nations are now in permanent decline." Oil is a non-renewable resource. Wasn't 100% of all oil producing nations supply in decline the moment the first well went into production?
I also see the Saudi Arabia has announced they are ready to provide whatever supply is required to address high oil prices. I wonder if the real determination to find alternative energy has finally made them realize they'll be back to squatting on sand dunes once we get off their teat?
June 10, 2008 / 20:57
LOL, Max:
No Max...even in terms of total reserves there are proven & probable reserves. Countries have production levels which hit a peak and then begin permanent decline. The US peaked in 1970 & the North Sea in 1999. The North Sea declined rapidly from 6.4 million barrels a day to 4.5 in just 8 years. Cool eh.
A few things about the Saudi's mate. For starters, daily production in Saudi Arabia has remained flat for several years. The recent increase actually returned the country to it's previous production levels after they fell. Compare it to you making 500 dollars a week for 5 weeks, then making 400 in week 6 but getting 500 in week 7 then claiming you "raised production"
Secondly, in the late 80s, reserves in SA increased dramatically. Strangely, this was around the same time that OPEC set quotas based on proven reserves. Magically they increased overnight for the entire middle east. Cool eh. Wonder if that means their lying
The Saudis also claim that speculation is the reason for high oil prices. In 1999 when crude was 10 bucks a barrel, they claimed it was speculation that kept it low. Cool eh. Wonder if it was glut/demand ?
And..sadly, poor Ontario can't have any of Alberta's oil. Why? Well, the pipeline goes north south. Ontario gets it's oil from Venezuela & the Middle East. Plus we sold our energy rights to the USA in the Free Trade agreement.
Within 5 years you'll have mandatory gas rationing in Ontario. Stock up now kids.
June 11, 2008 / 07:02
Welcome back Irvine! Take that 'ya bastards!

I've been eating a lot of the Ralphs Grade AA Large Eggs and a couple days before I heard about the recall I started getting stomach pains. They have gotten a LOT worse, I already went to the ER once, and if they could actually do anything for me I would go in again. This is literally the worst pain I have ever been in. I'll know by tomorrow if its salmonella or not, the doctors have no idea as of now.

one thing this recall has done is show people that egg farms aren't like that cozy home farm with Foghorn Leghorn romancing the lady hens, they are basically forced labor camps for chickens and it's amazing we don't have more of these recalls.

Thought I would supplement the list of tips here and bring in one of my own:
Fully utilize your resource box. Many people only put one link when they are offered two.
Why? If you have the ability to put two links in the box you should. Put a link of a product you are promoting and a link to your actual website.
You are getting the credit for the clicks and double your chances of getting someone to click on them!
September 9, 2010 / 17:22
2 extra tips Whatever you offer in your Resource Box make sure it meets these two requirements: 1) The offer is related to the article they just read. I know that sounds so obvious but you should see some of the stuff I see. 2) The offer is a sample of a product you can offer them later. When they enjoy the sample, they are much more likely to invest in the product.
