Making Kids Accountable
Full marks to the federal government for pushing ahead with its plan to review and reform youth crime laws in Canada.
Last week the Supreme Court upheld the lenient treatment of young offenders in Canada, but Justice Minister Rob Nicholson says the government continue its review with an eye to "holding young lawbreakers accountable to their victims and the community."
Something Canadians have been demanding for years.

Canadas treatment of young offenders is deliberately delicate beacuse you don't want to ruin the lives of a youngster after one case of bad judgment. But regardless of the # of offences the only way I can see detering dilinquent behaviour is to make parents accountable for the actions of their kids. Particularily for young kids who, lets face it, if given enough autonomy will get into trouble.
As a parent I assume 100% responsibility for the actions of my kids and expect the same from other parents. I certainly wouldn't blame an institution if my child broke the law or dropped out of school early. It's so ridiculous to think that someone would actaully do this - it's mind boggeling. Hit parents in the wallet for the actions of their kids and home style discipline "will" pay dividends. Our elected representitives need to stop worrying about ruffeling feathers by saying what they truly feel is right. Blame parents. Blame them every time a kid screws up. Blame them publicly and openly. Because there's noboldy else to blame.
Right on Jeff. However, sometimes, even with the best of parents, kids do get into trouble. Nevertheless, it's still the parents who are responsible for their action. Period.
Having the parents "pay up" is cute for minor offences or victimless crimes. The Young Offenders Act is usless when it comes to major offences. If your old enough to do the crime, you're man enough to do the time.
I agree with keeping the parents accountable by putting them in jail. Better yet have teh kid spend time with his parent in jail. Spending some time with their parent in jail will probably be the most uninterupted time they'll have with their parent, which if you look at it might be the problem all along. On that note, deadbeat dads should be the first to go to jail with their delinquent sons... might spark some interest into how their progeny are doing before something bad happens.
If you're old enough to do the time, I say you're old enough to vote, gamble and/or consume alcohol.
That's an implication of that kind of policy, is it not?
