Turning On Tina

I just went online and tried to buy some Tina Turner tickets for my wife and daughter.

But after viewing the price for the best available seats, that weren’t very good, Ticketmaster, The ACC and Tina Turner can collectively bite my clank.

The tickets were $150.00 apiece, but that wasn’t the extent of it. There was also something called a convenience charge of $14.25 a ticket, and something called a building facility charge of $1.75.

Grand total, with delivery, $337.00.

I guess I’m out of touch with reality, but that doesn’t mean I have to buy into it.

When my daughter Melanie was barely old enough to talk, Tina Turner had just released her album Private Dancer and Melanie loved it.

She used to walk around the house singing “What’s Love Got o Do With It.”

I eventually got the video of the concert and Mel would sit in front of the television set and watch it from beginning to end several times over.

So… my sweet wife Delyse thought it would be nice if she and Mel could go to the concert at the ACC in November for old time’s sake.

But it ain’t gonna happen.

I don’t know what pisses us off more. Giving a hundred and fifty to Turner, giving $14.25 to Ticketmaster, or coughing up the buck seventy five for the building facility charge.

It’s all bullshit and we’re not going to get sucked in.

Yeah, that's a criminal price for tickets. But it gets worse. The scalpers will be selling them for many times more. The second tickets become available, the scalpers are on-line with automated programs that get through the character recognition security stuff faster than a human can and buy up all the best seats.

Madonna in Vancouver - tickets start at $120 and go up to $390 - for a stadium show! These folks don't make money off records anymore so...

I feel the pain Freddie. I bought tickets to see Rush in july at my wifes urging. I paid $188 for 2 seats (ticket master charges included) not quite $337 but a lot never the less. I looked at a stub i still have for Rush at MLG for Decomber 78. $9 No "service" charges. I know there has been inflation but....

You missed the best part Freddie, Ticketmaster now has a section on their website where people can sell tickets they've purchased from them. It has some dressed-up name but basically they've now legalized scalping! I wanted to get Celine Dion tickets for my wife and sister-in-law but I couldn't find two seats together so I checked out the scalping section : $300.00 was the cheapest for one ticket.

And the music industry wonders why things are in such a sad state of affairs. Greedy, money-hungry bastards.

As for whining about it, that's what bloggers and comentators do. They point things out, mostly absurd things, like $300 plus for 2 concert tickets.

As long as people keep shelling out 200 to 300 bucks for tickets to see has been artists (I use the term artists lightly) tickemaster will keep increasing the charges. There’s a huge market for people in their 30s and up who can and will pay a lot to see someone who’s older than their parents sing. I won’t.

Automated programs that get through the character recognition security stuff? Hey I wanna know about this!
I'm partially blind and I use a screan reader and those character images are a real pain in the ass cause it doesn't read them.
So when those things come up I'm screwed, unless there's an audio file that reads out the characters then I'm ok but even those can be a pain at times cause the audio quality is shitty.

I remember i paid 15.00 back in 1982 to see Foreigner,Loverboy,Ted Nugent, and Iron Maiden at Rich Stadium in Buffalo N.Y.(i still have the ticket stub)...4 bands for a measly 15 bucks...and yes i do realize it was 26 years ago and yes i do also realize that prices do rise, but seriously folks, 150.00 plus extra bullshit charges for a seat in a stadium paid for 100 times over to see a senior citizen jump up and down in a short skirt (gross) is nauseating....it goes to show that there are a lot of stupid people out there...and us Canadians are among the stupidest in the world...we will shell out almost anything for whatever it is we buy with minimal complaining and that includes our gas prices as well..Sad..very sad indeed...
