Peterborough Looks Nice

April 15, 2008 @ 09:48

With the issue of road tolls in the GTA being raised again, I can’t help but think I’m glad I’m 51 and not 31.

You never want to wish your life away, but in certain situations having an extra twenty years tacked onto your situation ain’t necessarily a bad thing.

When I see young people facing the prospect of three and four hundred thousand dollar mortgages just to get into the housing market, I’m glad I’m 51 and not 31.

My first house cost the equivalent of one year’s salary when I first bought back in 1984.

Yes, it was Brampton but believe me, with the average price even in Brampton nipping at three hundred grand, there are virtually no first time buyers in my position today. It’s out of control.

I honestly don’t know how the average family copes today given the pressures of unrealistic performance expectations, insufficient compensation and corporate greed.

The middle class in under attack and we’re well on our way to creating a society of every day slaves. A culture of debt that will keep the masses under control while a select few at the top make more money than they can ever dream of spending in a lifetime.

It didn’t used to be that way. It’s a culture that started to raise its head in the early 90’s and has flourished to where we find ourselves today – and its not over - talk of third and forty year mortgages and heavy advertising for consolidation loans tells us where we’re going.

What has this got to do with road tolls? It's the capper.

I can’t imagine trying to make a living, and top of everything else, having the government slap a toll on the roads I use. It means more pressure on the middle class and clear indication that the people we pay our taxes to, don’t have any idea how to use them.

And why am I glad I’m 51 instead of 31 when it comes to road tolls in the GTA?

Because I’m in the position where I can say “piss on it all”, pack up and move away.

Sometimes I wish I was 52 instead of 32 Fred.
I live in Sudbury and we see an average home price of $285,000.
I understand the Mining industry is booming right now.
But if i was 52 I could just pack up and say screw it!
Now just imagine throwing in a toll road. I think it would be enough to make me go Postal!

It is all going to collapse and correct itself. We are seeing it happen in the US already.

It isn't stopping at road tolls Freddie P. Just wait till the Liberals are finished with us. By us I mean the middle class. We pay and pay and pay. Example of a hidden tax. Halton just brought in the new Green Bin for recycling. Guess what, unless you want maggots crawling all over the place, you now have to pay $5.00 for 20 lousy compostable bags. 25 cents a bag. Ridiculous!!

Hey Freddie, come on over! it's a damn site better than where you are now! let me know when you'll be here & i'll put a steak on the BBQ & we'll go for a boat ride after and talk about the Leafs!
if we really want, we can always drive into T.O. and leave after the Jays game & tell each other we're glad we don't have to do this everyday!

The sad part is that you're actually probably better off buying a house instead of renting a place.
The cost of rent in Sudbury has gotten absolutely rediculous. Because housing is in demand, landlords are gouging everybody by charging outrageous prices, and they're getting it too, cause obviously people need places to stay so they have no choice but to pay the money.

Phil - go to Costco. You can get 125 Biosak compostable bags for $15. There made to fit the kitchen composter bin. Does 0.12 per bag make you feel any better?

Thanks for the tip Max, but I understand that to shop at Costco you have to pay them for the privilege.

Phil - Not sure about Halton..

But in Peel you can use newspapers to line the small bin instead of those bags.

Phil - but I bet that you have no problem paying upwards of $35 for 24 bottles of beer.....

Actually Doug I pay $26.40 for a case of Beer. Why pay 35.00 for pretty well the same product??

Phil - let's say you use 4 of those bags a week. At your current cost, thats .25 x 4 = $1.00/wk, or $52 bucks a year. Costco membership is $50/year. Man, I just saved you $2 bucks a year!!! Plus all the other savings you'll get on Costco merch.

Freddie? Sometimes I can't quite figure you out. You started out sounding like you were worried about the next generations and your points I totally agree. Then you end with the cowards point of view. Whats up with that?
