Freddie P. On TV

April 10, 2008 @ 10:27

I’m heading out to join my friends Mark Hebscher and Donna Skelly on CHCH Live @ 5:30 this afternoon.

We’re going to talk about beer at the Rogers Centre.

Turns out there were far too many drunkards at the Blue Jays home opener on Friday night, and again on Tuesday for the Jays special promotion “two dollar Tuesdays.”

More than a hundred fans were thrown out on each night because they got too pissed and then started fighting.

Now there’s a threat by Blue Jays President Paul Godfrey to cancel “two dollar Tuesdays”, and there are others who question whether alcohol should be sold at sporting events… period.

One of those is the Reverend Charles McVety of the Canadian Family Action Coalition.

Of course the very thought is ridiculous. Why should the actions of a few, ruin the enjoyment of thousands who like to have a beer at the ball game.

I’ll look forward to knocking heads with the Reverend.

Oh! This should be a good one Fred. Don't let him take over the conversation as he usually does.

I seriously doubt the Jays will ever ban the sale of beer at games - there’s way too much revenue to be had from it.

That said they have to provide better security/police at the games to prevent idiots from abusing other law abiding fans. No parent wants their kid hearing or seeing these drunken turds acting up. Most people can handle their booze while some act like morons after 3 drafts.

I've been to dozens of Jays games over the years, both at the Ex and the Dome, and always enjoyed the experience. Having not been to a game for a couple of years, I was given 4 tickets to an early season game last year, so I took my wife, 10 year old, and his friend. Frankly, I was shocked at the drunken behaviour, profanity, and fighting. We saw at least 4 (young, male) idiots forcibly removed by police, one of whom was probably charged with assault because he took a swing at the cop. I like a beer or two at the park, and we'll never see an outright ban, but the environment was brutal, especially in front of lots of kids. These weren't cheap 500 level seats either, but in the 100 section. I won't be hurrying back any time soon.

I can't figure out how these morons get enough beer into them to get that out of control Any time I've been to the dome, it's usually a half hour wait to get one. They either spend 75% of the time in line, or bring their own booze in.

I have a great idea lets blame the Maple leafs because if they were still playing there would not have been any body at the game
if I am not mistaken when you order beer there u can order 2at a time
the other solution is do what they do at Junior Hockey and that is no Beer in the stands

I agree with Freddie, but I did notice that it was a bit more annoying than usual.
Increase security and it doesnt have to be a ban, it has to be security at the places in the dome serving people. The servers need to recognize when someone has had too much and cut them off. Thats why you have to be a certain age to serve because you need to have common sense when serving people.
Part of the adult baseball experience is a beer and a hot dog at a ball game.....don't take that away from the responsible fans.

Is there any irony that on the same day when Chris Bosh is asking for fans to get louder, the Jays are trying to figure out how to keep the fans under control?

I wish they would stop giving the Reverend Charles McVety a forum for his nonsense. The man clearly has some issues and to constantly have him on as a spokesperson for the Christian Right is unfair to both him and those on the right who don't share his views but get labeled as intolerant when McVety proports to represent them.
I would hope that the producer of live at 5 would book a more representative member of the Christian community instead of using the Rev. as such an easy mark.
Like shooting fish in a barrel.

Live @ 5:30 is a sinkhole of talent. Look at Hebscher, look at the subjects they talk about.

It's a program that panders.
That's why you won't find anyone better than McVety as a guest.

CanWest Global likes to pander. It's their stock in trade. Just look at how many stories--video and print--are really opinion pieces disguised as news.

Viewers deserve better. Look away from CanWest to find better.

Wouldn’t it be a freaky coincidence if David is from Toronto?
