A World Gone Mad

April 11, 2008 @ 11:01

I was listening to the Stafford Show on am 640 this morning and the subject was the closing of 23 swimming pools by the Toronto District School Board this summer.

It’s shameful and it shouldn’t happen, and Stafford’s topic was whether the provincial government should step in and provide funding to keep the pools open.

It was interesting to hear people from outside the GTA argue that their tax dollars shouldn’t be used for Toronto pools. But that’s not what struck me.

It was a point made by more than one listener.

Isn’t it interesting that in the same year the TDSB OK’s Africentric schools, they decide to close swimming pools.

There is money for a harmful segregation plan, but there’s no money to keep swimming pools open in the dead of summer.

Yes, it’s a world gone mad.

Fred: The world hasn’t gone mad – its just Toronto!

There’s going to more and more closures of facilities that the city’s Fuher (David Miller) deems unnecessary. However, there will always be plenty of money for lefty-friendly projects - essentially anything that is supported by work unions, the fellas on Church Street and rec centres for ‘disenfranchised’ youth (see criminals).

Hey Freddie,

I don't agree with you on the closing of the swimming pools, most of them are so old and poorly maintained they should be condemned, the rest are so under utilized they are a waste of money.

What I do agree with you on is how fast people from "outside" of Toronto, like Brampton and other places ;-), always complain about this and that with Toronto, "Toronto should take care of it's own garbage problem", "Why do we have to pay for Toronto's transit needs", etc.... These comments/complaints are always issued by the same Bozo's that take the Go Train to downtown Toronto from the 905, buy their over packaged fast food and throw the litter in the garbage bins (sometimes) in downtown Toronto on the way to their job in downtown Toronto, where their employer has probably managed a sweet deal with the City to pay no or massively low taxes. That same company being in a commercial building has no agreement with the city for garbage pick up, contracts their garbage removal to a private contractor who drives their poorly maintain garbage truck through the city and dumps the garbage at a fraction of the cost the city pays somewhere else, also not in the 416, leaving a trail of crap to be cleaned up by the city and spewing tonnes of emissions into the city air creating smog. They also have no mandate or regulation for recycling, so ALL of their waste goes to landfill meaning there is less and less available and the cost per tonne goes up, especially for "the city".

Good thing Johnny 905 gets to go home to Burlington every night to his waterfront home and drive his 8 cylinder SUV 6 blocks to the Home Depot or worse, Walmart, to send his Canadian earned dollars back to the USofA and whine about his provincial taxes paying for GO Transit, Toronto City pools or the garbage trucks, he filled driving through his precious 401 en route to Michigan.

Toronto should smarten up and use those taxation powers to tax anyone coming to work in the 416 from the 905 to offset the carbon emissions and garbage removal, policing and missed taxes from the bad commercial deals they always seem to make. Forget taxing the bottled water, give it out for free at Union Station to all the Johnny 905's with their tax on the GO Ticket.

Anyway, only slightly off topic, back tot he point. If they actually shut down the pools at the local schools and built half as any community pools better distributed, they would probably get better use and cost less to operate. I know very few adults that have the money to pay a small usage fee for a pool that would go to a public elementary or high school to use a pool. Make it a community centre facility and usage would go up and small usage fees would dramatically offset the costs of operating them.

Oh; you poor hard-done by residents of the Peoples Republic of Toronto... you voted for that lefty whackjob Miller, so live with it and keep your hands out of my wallet!

As for the TDSB... those undersized male reproductive organs/socialist birth canals are still trying to blame Mike Harris for the pool closures! The "joys" of 'publik educayshun' never cease to amaze me. They can't even teach Johnny how to read... so what the hell are they doing in charge of swimming pools in the first place?!

So let me understand... close the pools when they are most used and most needed, Hmm & Haw if the skating rinks should stay open during the time of year they're used the most? And "most of them are so old and poorly maintained they should be condemned" Who's fault is that?!
It's no wonder childhood obesity is up, as is teenage gang violence. They keep taking away options for these kids that would at least help them stay out of trouble.
It all makes perfect sense.
In Bizzaro world.

The closing of the pools was probably planned from the start to fund the new Afrocentric school...Where else would the money come from??

Toronto taxpayers have a higher contribution rate to the education portion of their taxes than anyone else in the Province. The provincial government realizes this, but doesn't want to change this (you get more votes dumping on Toronto than treating it fairly).
This money is then distributed to all the other areas of the province. The last figure I heard was $300 million a year leaves via this imbalance. Why not eliminate this imbalance and let us in Toronto look after the pools ourselves?
