Thanks Oprah

March 4, 2008 @ 09:59

Needless to say once Oprah Winfrey latches onto something and mentions it on her show, it becomes a huge smash hit.

Her book club has made instant millionaires out of several people, and on many occasions these books have landed in our house.

Like millions of other women in the North America, by wife Delyse is an Oprah fan. Not an Oprah fanatic, just a fan. From time to time, Oprah's vanity and false sense of worth can get on Delyse's nerves - and mine too because I often watch Oprah with my darlin' as a bonding thing.

Anyway, the latest addition to our library is Eckhart Tolle's "A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life's Purpose."

Oprah claims the book has changed her life, although why a billionaire who turns anything she touches to gold would want to change her life is beyond me.

She's probably full of shit but that doesn't sway the Oprah lovers who hang off every word she says and run out and buy anything she endorses.

Delyse bought the book for me, and I think she bought it for the same reasons she bought me "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff' by Richard Carlson about ten years ago.

My sweet wife is the most patient, understanding and compassionate person I know, and I can honestly say that would be backed up by anyone who knows her.

The problem is, I'm quite the opposite of my lovely and every so often she gives me subtle hints on improving my mindset and outlook on life. Delyse doesn't buy into my theory that pessimism leads to pleasant surprise, while optimism often leads to disappointment.

And I guess that's why I received "A New Earth."

Delyse did some research and she's convinced this book would be good for me and she really wants me to read it, and I will.

As soon as I finish "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff."

Did she spend time in classs with Oprah last night? My Lovely wife did. I went to the garage, I'm improving my outlook by rebuilding Motorcycle Carburetors.

Fred,

"pessimism leads to pleasant surprise".

Those are awesome words to live by. You should be on the motivational circuit !!

Oprah will claim that one brand of toilet paper has "changed her life" if it will grasp the attention of the turtleneck sweater-wearing figure-skating fangirl soccer moms who hang on to her every word.

This female Benny Hinn has her audience so enchanted they buy shit like "The Secret" which promises everything to anybody no matter how awful they are.

And when she's caught, ie: James Frey's "A Million Little Pieces", she suddenly claims she lost her superpowers and was duped.

Don't forget she was doing a show on the level of today's Jerry Springer until the consultants told her that "angels", "spirituality" and "needy women" were the way to go. But nobody seems to remember the old Oprah.

They just remember the new, improved Oprah who sells self-esteem and empowerment like an old fashioned Ponzi scheme.

And if I hear one more person tell me how much money she makes per second I will be forced to give them Cretien's "Shawinigan Handshake"!

Stafford, I'm with you about Oprah. She is only interested in what makes people watch her show. That's it. A bigger phony does not exist on television and if you want to witness how phony, turn down the sound and watch her facial expressions and body language. I have read A New Earth and it is no different than what Wayne Dyer has been preaching for years, no different than the famous and ridiculous Celestine Prophesies (anyone remember the big fuss about that book?) which stole heavily from the book I'm, Ok, You're Ok (another book that ruled lives and shaped opinions for awhile). It just goes around and around. This trend indicates that most people can't think for themselves and look to gurus in the form of priests and preachers and imans, newscasters, politicians and motivational speakers to help them form an opinion and guide them through life. It is a cycle that has been occuring for thousands of years and isn't about to stop. I eagerly await the re-emergence of Zeus and look forward to the smiting of non-believers and unusual occurances of weather that will ensue...oh wait, that's happening now.

I've never liked Oprah. I once saw a documentary feature on her where she showed the 9 golden retrievers she had. I though to myself; "that must be a lot of poop, I wonder who picks that up?". She had someone do it for her. She lives in a fanstasy world where a good idea and a few bucks makes the world better. I think she's a phony.

Funny you should linke Tolle's book with "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff" -- that's exactly the same dusty little book that I thought of when I read about half of Tolle's book. I had to take it back to the library and I doubt I'll read the other half. I found myself disturbed by it...not sure why, all this "ego" and "being" stuff, maybe...maybe I half-expected to see the ships coming for me when I looked up at the sky, I don't know...but as my friend pointed out, and nothing meant towards anybody who does enjoy the book...as far as Oprah's shows go...most of the people who latch onto "The Biggest Thing EVER" ideas and products that are presented on them are mostly sad sacks who can't cope anyway and are always banging on about how this or that completely TRANSFORMED THEM. Life just ain't like that, my friend! Listened to you on Derringer this morning and looked at your blog for the first time today. Love it!
