This is what takes a lot away from the sport. Diehard will say fighting "pumps up your team" or some crap. A good goal can pump up your team as well. The other goalie clearly didn't want to fight but Roy kept pounding him. Real brave of him.

The kid is a nutjob just like his dad. I hope Roy never gets a coaching job in the NHL. I'm sure Colorado will bring him in as coach next year though. Then they pretty much have the whole geriatric gang back together again.

I agree that this particular incident was stupid, cowardly, pitiful etc. But to say that Americans don't like fighting is funny. What is the biggest, fastest growing spectator "sport" in America right now? Ultimate Fighting. Americans (generally) do not like hockey because it is the most difficult sport in the world for any person to play. Anyone, with 0 training can pick up a bat and ball, toss a football, play tennis, golf etc. and do reasonably well at it. Ask a grown person with no training to strap on skates and play a game of hockey and that person looks like an idiot. Americans (generally) don't like what they are not good at.

I'm an American and I'm not good at ANY sport. I have no athletic ability whatsoever!
But, I like football and can appreciate the skill and strategy that goes into it. I also appreciate the skill and ability that goes into hockey--it's just that the fighting aspect holds it back from being a major sport.
I also think Ultimate Fighting, Boxing and Wrestling are stupid, by the way.
And even though there's no fighting--and there is MUCH drinking, which I do appreciate--I think curling is the most boring thing I've ever seen, next to baseball.

Just wanted to expand on fred's ESPN thoughts.
ESPN refuses to acknowledge the NHL after Bettmen refused to cut them in on live game coverage. ESPN wanted Winter programming, after Footbal was finished for ESPN2. They were only willing to pay second rate price for it and Bettmen told them to stick it. Good for Gary, bad for Hockey. Hockey continues to be a regional sport. Especially when they give it to Versus, which is a regional network at best. I know many Sabre fans cant watch their home games, because they are broadcast on Versus alot and no WNY cable distributors carry Versus.
