Wilbur Wiped Out

March 1, 2008 @ 10:40

Over the past four decades the Toronto Maple Leafs have a done a lot of things that have been insulting to their fans.

To dissect and name would take too long, but thanks to their incompetence it can be summed up rather easily with four numbers. 1967.

But of all the screwy things they’ve done, this has to rank right up there with the worst.

Leaf management has ordered all reference to Bill Watters be taken out of the ACC because they think he’s too critical of them on his radio show.

None of the posters or banners or billboards that referenced the Watters show inside the building had anything critical written on them, it was just promotional material, but the powers that be, and you know who that is, decided they should be removed.

It’s the usual buck-passing, MLSE claims it was a decision makes by “marketing people”, but that’s a load of hooey. I’m sure it was made by a few incompetents at the top who can’t stand to be criticized.

In a way, this is a mild form of communism. Stifle the critic by snuffing the messenger, and I find it hard to believe that of all the problems they have, this seems to have taken priority.

I’m sure very few people who sat in the ACC and looked at Bill Watters Show promos made the connection to his criticism of the hockey team, but now that management has brought attention to it, everybody will know.

It’s very Peddie, er petty.

Bill has become a one trick pony lately, I can't listen to him anymore.

His constant complaining about the owner and his side-kick, it has reached the point of embarrassment.

This shouldn't come as a surpise to anybody - after all, they did the same thing to my dad Pat when Harold Ballard was doing his best to destroy the integrity of the once-mighty Leafs franchise.

Back then, Dave Hodge was hosting the Global-TV Leaf broadcasts, and he had my dad on as a Don Cherry'ish sidekick. Hodge asked my dad to say something positive about the Leafs, and Pat said they were positively brutal...to which Pal Hal said that he was banned for life from the Gardens.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Wilber had the same response that my dad had - which was a shout of joy in knowing he no longer would have the frustration and aggravation of having to attend in-person, the ongoing carnival act that these deep-pocket tyrant commies continue to put our world class city through, year after year after year (repeat 37 more times...).

And to 'Dave' - if you're not on the MLSE payroll, then you're probably a Sens fan, so you're comments are irrelevant on a Toronto blog. The fact that you can't listen to Bill Watters anymore is important because...?

If MLSE were to censor or marginalize me because of my views against the management and organization of the team, I would take it as a compliment. Watters will bask in the ratings increase over the controversy.

You have got to be kidding me? That reminds me of the Tom Donahoe era with the Bills. While he was here WGR 550 couldn't buy an interview with the Bills players or anyone in manaagement because WGR was critical of the Bills moves.
These are professionala, grown men and they should take credit for their mistakes and admit to it when they are running a sinking ship.
Shame on the Leafs Management for being a bunch of cowards, maybe they should hire Bill he seems to know more than anyone in their current front office.

Wow, my few humble words to be critiqued by a sibling of Pat Marsden, I'm honored.

There was a class act, I followed his career from the start of CTV right through til he finished at FAN590, where he got stiffed after he saved the station.

Here was a man that was wronged many times, but he never entered into personal, vitriolic attacks on air.

Something to be learned by Pats' demeanor, and no Mike I don't work for MLSE, I'm almost as old as Cliff Fletcher, they wouldn't hire me......hmmm maybe.

Sens fan, no, Leaf fans always.

A prediction,
As I remember, 640 has another 2 years on their broadcast rights on Leafs games (maybe less).
I predict that a certain large media company that has holdings in Radio, Television, Cell Phones, Cable TV, Major/Minor Sports franchises in Toronto and has agreement with MSLE. Will get the broadcast rights to a certain Toronto NHL team. Causing a “gut job” to happened on the fore said radio station.
This has all ready happened in Vancouver when the Team1040 (now owned be CTVGlobemedia) out bid AM730 (the other Mojo station) for the rights to broadcast the Vancouver Canucks. Just now look what they are doing now.

So Fred, I suggest stay away from 640, unless you want to talk about alternatives on taking the DVP.

MLSE is committing censorship and that's wrong.

That having been said, I don't listen to Bill's 640 show, but I do hear him twice weekly on Derringer's show.

I have to say, I really get tired of all the rhetoric. I know the Leafs suck - I get it. But, I get tired of hearing back seat drivers like Bill Watters dictate how the team should be run. I like Bill, but I really do get sick of listening to the same opinions over and over again.

Here's a thought - let's stop talking about the Leafs - let Watters and the media stop talking and let's see what happens.,

It is refreshing to hear Watters speak his mind when representing the 'official Leaf station'. Sound like Peddie is rattled by his comments. Keep it up Billy.

I am really starting to hate the leafs. Not only can they not take any form of criticism even though they don't get as much as they deserve but they can't even lose properly. I hope we get another team in the gta one of these says.

The fact that MANAGEMENT did this:
Mr.Lashway said,"We made the decision really based on Bill's personal attacks on us that we felt went beyond the standards of journalism."
proves Mr. Waters point that management is the problem. They're more concerned about what people are saying about them, rather than what fans are saying about the team.
Man...what did we as Leaf fans do to deserve this?! We just wat the Cup!!
