Move On

March 4, 2008 @ 10:00

Not a very good day for the Liberals.

When the Chuck Cadman story broke last week it seemed a little odd based on the fact a million dollar life insurance policy had been offered to a dying man.

Anyone with a brain had to ask the question at that point – who sells a life insurance policy that covers a man with terminal cancer?

That’s why I was hesitant to comment on the story before getting more of the facts, and yesterday we got more of the facts.

Cadman’s wife Dona claims she asked the Prime Minister point blank after her husband died whether he knew of an insurance policy bribe, and PM denied it.

"He looked me straight in the eyes and told me he had no knowledge of an insurance policy offer. I knew he was telling me the truth; I could see it in his eyes," said Cadman.

It also explains the bogus telephone call the Liberals have been trying to use against the Prime Minister. In it, Stephen Harper tells author Tom Zytaruk that Cadman had refused an offer from two members of the Conservative party, but it wasn’t an offer of an insurance policy Harper was referring to, it was an offer to rejoin the party.

"Chuck liked, respected and trusted Stephen Harper. I like, respect and trust Stephen Harper. If I didn't believe in my heart, that he was telling me the truth. ... I wouldn't be running as the Conservative candidate for Surrey North," said Cadman.

That was another burning question that begged to be answered all weekend.

If Stephen Harper was such a rotten and ruthless guy why would Dona Cadman be interested in running for the party?

This was a non story from the get-go and if an offer was made, it was made by a couple of over-zealous party members without the knowledge of the Prime Minister, but what makes even this angle lose steam is the fact that Chuck Cadman refused to name anyone before he died.

Nice try Liberals, now shut-up, there's a country to run.

Something isn't right with this story. Dona Cadman approved the book and said something wasn't right but now she says there is nothing wrong? I don't get it.
It sounds like a ploy on her part to get extra coverage for her election.

The story didn't make sense from the start and now it makes even less sense.

I can't wait to watch Dion back peddle now and try to squirm his way out of the law suit.

There is far more to this than the words of current words of Donna Cadman and Stephen Harper. Cadman appears to be changing her gears and take on the story while Harper is playing hardball with the Liberals. The fact of the matter is this issue needs to be addressed by the RCMP. If Harper and the Conservative Party are clean, I can accept that. But I, for one, refuse to accept this as a dead issue. Had this been Martin or Dion accused of such a ploy, the Conservative pundits would be out for blood. If such an offer was made, it is impossible to think that Harper did not know anything of the nature of the conversation.

No insurance company would write a million dollar policy for a dying man.

Also, if Cadman received some kind of bribe, what are the Liberals screaming about? After all, didn't Paul Martin bribe Belinda Stronach with a cabinet post? Hypocrites.

Paul Martin wrote the forward for the book.

That would have been months ago, funny he didn't smell anything wrong then? If he did I'm sure we would have heard about it long before now.

Dion gets incredibly bad advice from a liberal party so desperate to be back on top they'll happily trample over their own to get there. He should show a little backbone instead of allowing himself to be the sacrificial lamb. I'm glad Harper is vigilant in defending himself.

Pam – Stronach to Cadman are not comparable situations. If you want to make a comparison with Stronach please differ to the David Emerson debacle.

THANK YOU LEW. Once again Fred walks around with eyes wide shut as do some of the other people that frequent here. Cadman is a completely different case. Harper and his cronies are just as hypocritical in this situation.
Do I completely buy into the this whole cadman thing? Not really she's got a book and a political position to push so this is the right amount of controversy to sell a book and make people feel sorry for her having a dying husband who stood his ground against being bought by the Conservatives.

Lets keep everything in perspective though the Conservatives would be all over something like this too. So no party is free of the over-zealous nature to see the other party fall.

LEW - do not presume to tell me what this issue is and what it is not. By the way, it's "defer", not "differ". The Liberals are hypocrites, plain and simple.
Now, go back to your spelling and grammar lessons. Maybe at recess you could tell me just which insurance company wrote Cadman's policy...

Freddie - you've obviously drunk the kool-aid. The "insurance policy" argument is harper & finley's diversion - the fact is harper knew a financial offer was being made to influence a vote. your boy isn't squeaky clean. he's acted holier than thou since day one, with his bogus accountability act (which he failed to pass or even live up to), with his appointing unelected cabinet members, and now when he's been caught on tape admitting to something wrong, he threatens to sue everyone who is asking him questions about this.

your boy is a bully.

your boy is dirty.

your boy is not worthy to lead this country.

but take heart, you're not the only one who has been suckered in. 35% of people got suckered in during the last election. unfortunately that was enough for your boy to seize power and begin his reign of terror.

Oh Pam, I'd love to meet at recess. If I continue to be a bad boy you may have to give me a good tongue lashing....
Whilst we bask in the glow, can we discuss political whores like Stronach and Emerson with their pimp parties, then you can close the loop between them and Cadman for me?

Paul

Mike... there is a button on your key board that says "Shift". Use it from time to time. I know when you're texting and being cool with your highschool friends it is the norm, but for the rest of us we're used to proper punctuation when we read.

Thirty-five percent suckered eh? Those 35% plus whatever ever percentange voted for the NDP and the Greens are the ones that had any balls to vote for something else. What did your vote go towards? A leader and a party that has obstained from how many votes now? And why? Because if he votes where his mouth is, he'll bring down the government and after an election, he'll end up with less seats than he has now. And in the mean time Harper passes bill after bill unopposed... You should be proud, you and the people that voted with you must be really proud. At this rate, Harper will be the first minority government to go a full 4 year mandate. Who needs a majority as long as the Dion is the leader of the opposition?

For those who think the Cadman and Stronach situations "are not comparible", here's a fascinating refresher:

actually Paul, my vote went to a progressive conservative candidate. unfortunately progressive conservatives are not welcome in harper's party, and Garth Turner was turfed.

and no, i'm not proud of dion, or harper, or layton. i don't believe anyone is proud of the way our politician's conduct themselves.

LEW

Thanks for the refresher Trish - did you notice that Chuck wasn't on the "bought" list - so stop lumping the man in with the trash - he doesn't deserve it.

mike from oakville
March 5, 2008 / 10:35

now even the national post is calling on harper to explain himself....

Trish

LEW, we may never know the truth about Cadman - not with his wife apparently changing her story for her own benefit. And as far as lumping him in the trash, I did nothing of the sort. The liberals have already done that.

I feel left out, nobody slammed me for mentioning Mr. Dithers did the forward.

Where are all you lefties?

Paul

Dave, wwa the forward kinda wishy washy and not really going anywhere :).

Nobody is going to slam you because nobody read it. :)

I hope that Harper follows through with his lawsuit. The Liberals should, as anyone else has to, be forced to prove their accusations if they are made outside of the House of Commons.

The matter being decided in Court is much better than it being decided by an inquiry.

It is a very dangerous situation in society when someone makes an unprovable accusation which is defamatory. That alone is actionable. That has clearly been done here.

My first inclination is that the Liberals don't get it, but on reading some of the comments posted here by some of the people who obviously still think that such insurance policies do exist, maybe they do.

"He looked me straight in the eyes and told me he had no knowledge of an insurance policy offer. I knew he was telling me the truth; I could see it in his eyes,"

I can't believe everyone just niffed that crap up their noses.

I could also SEE in her eyes he gave her a delicious sundae before she looked in his eyes.
