When I first heard they were going to make the "Don Cherry Movie", I thought, what's the use.
We already know all we need to know about the guy. He's been in our living rooms every Saturday night for the past 24 years and he didn't hide much.
We learned what the guy was all about, and more. Or so we thought.
But it runs out this CBC project could be worth while. The script was written by Don's son Tim it deals with Cherry's life prior to Hockey Night in Canada.
The early years, his life in the minors and how it affected his family.
Tim got to offer some insights that other script writers wouldn't, and he got to take some privileges that Don probably wouldn't have OK'ed from somebody else.
Apparently there are some scenes that are downright embarrassing.

Don Cherry is fun to watch Sat nights because he will either say something really stupid or the odd time you might actually agree with him. Having said that I don’t think a movie is warranted. He was a career minor league player, coached only a few seasons in the NHL but somehow is considered a hockey expert and worthy of a CBC movie (paid for by our taxpayers dollars). Strange country is this.

Well, that's one place I get to see my money at work. Something that I can feel proud about MY Canada....the CBC. It's my favorite station, next to TVO and PBS.

It's the complete package. Along with his hockey experience, he's an entertainer too.
I for one would watch the movie.
I agree he says some things that are way out there, but he's also right allot of the times.
He's a proud Canadian, and that's one of the things I dig about him.

Did CBC not do a piece on him about 10 years back that covered exactly this if I am not mistaken it was approx 1-2 hours long then did they find out something new since then
Some one should tell the CBC that the Writers strike in the US is over so they don't need to keep carting out these shitty show that only a handful of people really care for

MMMMM Grapes..... His true colours as a coach when he was coaching the Missy Ice Dogs of the O.H.L. The team won two or three games in two years even with Jason Spezza in the lineup. What a great coach. He had a hard time filling out the lineup sheet correctly.

troller - Cherry only coached the Ice Dogs for one year, and Spezza was playing for Windsor by then. Yeah, the team still stunk, but under Cherry they almost quadrupled their wins from the year before - up to 11 wins from 3 the year previous.

Grapes was a GREAT coach, and his teams made the playoffs 70% of the time, including going to the Stanley Cup finals in 1977 with only ONE player (Peter McNabb) who scored more than 30 goals.
What we've heard in the past, about his past, has been censored clean and sanitized, compared to what his son would be able to tell...
When you think about the free-wheeling era that Cherry played in the minors, I think that if it's done right, the movie could end-up with an R rating!

The dogs had those bad years with Jim Hulton & then Rick Vaive as coach.
Spezza actually went to Belleville and Windsor after his stint with the dogs.
It was still fun to work with grapes for 5 years.
