I agree Fred, if I was the Premier, the first thing I would do is shut down the casino's. In the few times that I have been to Casino Rama, I was the only one walking around the place without a John Deere hat on... and I could not see how all these people can afford to be there.
You may ask what business is it of mine if these people blow all their money this way... because it is the government.
These bureaucratic bastards sit in their offices thinking how they can get the last of the money out of the Canadian sheep. Let's see, we can't increase taxes or the people will revolt, (look what happened in England whose highest tax rate is almost 10% less than Canada's after their tax revolt)so we need another way. Gas, liquor and smokes are already 70% tax so we can't go there for now... then the bastards say, "let's open casino's and get whatever the average poor slob was saving for retirement and let a future premier worry about looking after them when they have nothing." These calculating scumbags prey upon the public.
I personally know 2 people whose whole lives have been destroyed by the casino's. They have lost their families, their homes and any future that they might have had... there is not one family member that they do not owe a couple of thousand dollars to. What did these people do for the last 30 years before there were casino's? Saved for a trip every couple of years to Vegas where they lost a few thousand, came back, and that was the end of it for another couple of years.
You all know someone who tell's you what they won at the casino... I won $500.00, I won $1000.00. What about the $3000.00 you lost last week? Notice how they never tell you about the losses?
They should be closed down.

Oh, baby c'mon...everybody knows somebody who's been through gambling hell and all of a sudden F. Ball is calling for a moratorium on casinos.
Get a freaking grip. Yeah people who play the slots are morons, people who play 6-5 blackjack are morons, people who play C. Stud are morons.
So are people who get into the stock market, mutual funds, GIC's and anything that, after fees, sucks them dry. You have to play big in the market to win in the market and nobody should know that more than Mr. Pennybags Ball.
If somebody is destroying their family because of a casino we should all sigh, take a deep breath and move on. Don't pull the B.S. that we should ban casinos because the poor and destitute find them to be a fool's paradise.
Each to their own, Mr. Ball. You have your sandbox to play in at your income level and nobody minds your knitting. You can win and lose at will. But offer the slobs a chance and suddenly you're Jack Layton.

What really grinds my gears is the fact that the winner is from Woodbridge! Like they really needed it. Why, just once can't I hear a story about a person who had lost their job, struggling to make ends meet, on a trip to Niagara Falls with the family, spent $20 and just played their last quarter in the slots? How come I never hear a story about that happening to somebody?!

First let me say that I feel honoured that a man of your integrity and professional experience would take the time to make a comment on something that I have said. Thank you.
Second, although we have been out of touch for many years, I still feel good about telling anyone that will listen, that I know you personally. Everyone always asked the same thing "is he really as smart as he comes across on the radio?" to which I always say "yes".
With that being said, two parts of your comment are firsts for me... no one has ever referenced me to Jack Layton, in fact it is usually the opposite nearing the far side of conservatism. Also, no one has ever called me a snob. I have never thought I was better than anyone else, ever.
The person I mention who owes every family member a couple of thousand dollars happens to owe me six thousand, so I guess I am a little bias on the subject. I will never see that money and it pisses me off that the government has it. They calculated these factors into their plan to extract as much of the average persons remaining after tax dollars. They planned for it. You mention the poor and destitute, when you know full well that anyone in that category is not a customer of the casino... it is the average hard working Canadian. What people now call fun money, they used to call savings I guess.
With reference to the mutual fund companies and stock market, realizing the hundreds of billions of dollars that Canadians have invested in RSP's, I, like millions of Canadians will be glad that when I am in the position to draw the money out, that it was compounding in the stock market and not having the fund manager take our future incomes to the casino. I know the government would love that windfall, but then only about what, 10% of us would have any money left for our so called retirement.
I know you well enough to know that Las Vegas is one of your favourite places in the world, I have been there, and I also think the place is fantastic, in fact I encourage anyone to go there, if not for any reason other than to visit where all the money in the world is. The place is incredible.
Everyone knows that the casino is taking in an enormously greater ratio of money to what it pays out. Even small casino's like Rama and Niagara are making hundreds of millions of dollars a year. So the government sees this as a way to have that savings in their porous pockets. They don't deserve it.

I thought Fred Ball’s comment about the John Deere hat was hilarious – because it’s true.
As for banning casinos, I think that would be nuts. I put gambling, drinking & playing the stock market in the same category. They are all fun to do but do it within moderation. Everyone has different levels of moderation but simply put: if any of these activities begin to ruin your life (through loss of money, friends, your job, etc) then effing stop doing it!!!
So often we cater our laws to the lowest common denominator. It’s like when we were in school and some kid did something really stupid which ruined it for every other kid.
