Dougie Would Have Played

March 17, 2008 @ 09:26

This may be terribly unfair but it’s a feeling I have.

Put in the same position as Mats Sundin on Saturday, I’m sure Dougie Gilmour would have played against the Buffalo Sabres.

Let’s review. The Leafs had ten games to play and they trailed the Philadelphia Flyers by five points for the final playoff spot.

Sundin skated on Saturday morning and it was determined that although his groin wasn’t that bad, it would be better to hold off for at least a game to make sure he was fully recovered when he returned.

I don’t get it.

Now the Leafs are six behind with nine to play and there are three teams between them and the Flyers.

The Leafs couldn’t afford to screw around on Saturday night. Sundin should have been in the lineup even if it meant shooting him up with some kind of a wonder drug.

Sundin should have insisted on playing because losing Saturday meant the playoff run was all but over. And now it is.

So if Sundin returns tomorrow against the Islanders, what was really gained by holding him back for an extra game? It was an urgent situation but the Leafs, and obviously Sundin, didn’t treat it that way.

And now the playoffs are gone.

Dougie would have played Saturday night. So would Wendel and Darryl.

Tell me more about the wonder drug. I had an injury "down there" a bunch of years ago. Every time my foot touched the ground it was like someone was working my nads with pliers and that was just going to the beer fridge. Is this gonna hurt me more than him is not the mind set to be in when checking. Mats did the right thing.

I agree Mats should have played. Even if he's only at 50% the team's just better with him. They needed to beat the Sabres to have a shot at the playoffs. Now they can forget it they have Ottawa, Boston and Montreal coming up and there's no way they're coming out of that on the winning side with or without Sundin. I'm a die hard fan but do they ever suck this year. It's been extremely depressing to watch.

So winning that one game at the risk of worsening the injury and losing him for the remainder of the season is a good idea how, exactly?

Sorry,

Can't agree. Had he played, he would have been expected to play 100% minimum, with a groin injury that's impossible. If he played any less than 100%, people would have complained, why is he taking the space that a young, healthy player could have had.

Better to miss 1 game and be ready for the next one at 100% than risk doing more damage, especially when they have so many young bucks that should have been able to step up.

It didn't really matter as no one showed up Saturday night except Buffalo.

couldn't agree more or said it better Freddie.....Dougie would have had to been missing a limb at the very least...........HC

You have obviously never had a severe groin injury. Just a minor strain brings about excruciating pain. It may be worse than they state as teams often do that to hide how long their players will be out.

Finally, although I often agree with you, how can you say that risking it now is worthwhile? If he plays and is injured, then what good is playoffs even if they made it? Without sundin they would have no chance. Your logic on this one freddie is severely flawed. Still love you but cannot disagree more.

PS do you remember the 'dougie' like attitude that darcy tucker showed by rushing back last yr from an injury only to play part of one game and set himself back weeks, rather than wait a couple games more? sounds familiar eh?

You are so totally out in left field on this! Sundin actually has a tear so playing too early would more than likely have made it worse putting Sundin on IR for a lot longer. Not worth it.

And how the heck do you know what Doug Gilmour would do? Have you asked him?

What you should be asking is where did the rest of the team go on Saturday night, they sure as heck didn't seem to be on the ice. Those were clones.

Fletcher is right, the on-ice product must change as there are several no-shows on the team now. Two players who seem to have lost their place and their touch, Ponikarovski and Wellwood. Poni at least has had some good games in the recent past, but he doesn't perform like he used to, and Wellwood, well he seems to have never recovered fully from his injury, there's something missing, don't know if it's a lingering injury issue or a lack of confidence, but he is more than likely done in TO.
