Barack Attack

March 18, 2008 @ 09:31

If you’ve read between the lines on this blog over the past couple of months you’ve probably determined that I was pulling for Barack Obama in the Democratic leadership race.

Now I’m not so sure.

Obama will deliver a speech on race relations this morning, prompted by his association with his pastor Jeremiah Wright, and it better be a doozy if he wants to pull himself out of the big pit he finds himself in right now.

If you haven’t seen some of the sermon highlights delivered by Obama’s pastor of twenty years, you should.

Check them out on You Tube.

Wright is “way out there” and the finest example of a racist you'll ever find, and even though Obama is not responsible for what Wright says or thinks, he’s got to explain why he’s maintained an association with him over the past two decades.

As a man running for President, he’s just got to do it and then the people have to decide whether to accept it or reject it.

Like it or not, choice of association plays a part in this situation.

Meanwhile, it’s amazing how race keeps forging its way into campaign, even in Toronto.

I listened to the Oakley Show for a while and I was amazed at how many people who identified themselves as black, defended the words of Jeremiah Wright, claiming all he was doing was telling the truth.

Among the things Wright said:

The U.S. government "lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of colour."

Yikes

I told ya two things and I stand by them.

1) Obama is unelectable right now. His past will haunt him, especially since he has no actual accomplishments to fall back on.

2) Hillary will do ANYTHING to get the nomination, including making sure this stuff gets leaked and then emphasized in the media. And don't think for a minute that the Ferraro comments were not a planned strategy by Hillary's forces.

America is so screwed, it's not even funny.

Steve
March 18, 2008 / 10:56

All the "people of colour" had to do was slap on a trojan to protect themselves against HIV like anybody else, but judging by the number of single-parent kids roaming the streets of Toronto these days, one assumes that wasn't an option.

Argie
March 18, 2008 / 11:00

Jon: I don’t think this is a case of Hillary leaking anything. The video has been around for a while and its about time the media is addressing it. The main media has been very careful about brining u certain things about Obama (for the obvious reasons). I’m no fan of Hillary but from what I can tell she hasn’t aligned herself with any known racists which is what Obama is doing.

Having said that I hope America is smart enough to elect John McCain.

Andrew
March 18, 2008 / 11:06

I think the term Argie is looking for is if America is "Stupid" enough they'll elect John McCain.

Told ya over a month ago, Coren wrote an article in The Sun about this pastor.

I cut it out and mailed to Oprah, funny, she hasn't got back to me.

Obama himself is of mixed race, I ask again why he presented as "black" not that it matters anyway - all Americans want is change.

Max Taffey
March 18, 2008 / 12:44

Jason - I think someone already mentioned here once that they're going to get change, no matter what happens. McCain is certainly no GWB by any stretch of the imagination. Most of the far-right hawks are in an uproar because he won - they consider it a disaster. But if you meant all Americans want is change so desperately that they're looking superficially at the one who most represents change visually, then I agree with you.

Andrew
March 18, 2008 / 13:03

John McCain won't bring much change. I used to think he was a good leader but recently I have seen more evidence of him losing his own values to become President. He vowed in 2000 to never let that happen again and look...it is happenning again. He used to be dead set against any form or torture and now he is repositioning to align with the current Government. Not the leader I would want to see.

I respect that Obama has condemed Wright's words but not him as a person. He could have easily dropped Wright and condemed everything about him. He didn't. He acknowledges his failings but also respects other aspects to the man. I think that speaks for Obama's character.

March 18, 2008 / 15:23

Okay, I just posted on this and if you give Obama a hard time for his Reverend being mad about his countries status in the world, then look at who supports and has supported John McCain and George W. Bush over the years, Pat Robertson is Anti Gay and a racist, and Jerry Falwell was the biggest loser of them all but no one and I mean no one attacked Bush for that. So get off Barack's case. His Reverend shows a little spirit about his country, there is such a thing has hating the views and actions of your country but still loving your country.

Bob
March 18, 2008 / 15:32

The shit is just starting to hit the fan. Sit back and hold on tight. In my opinion Obama is a goner and so he should be. He talks the talk but I definitely don't trust him.

Andrew
March 18, 2008 / 15:37

Exactly what about Obama don't you trust? Is he going to make lies to get the US into an unjust war? Is he going to have a staff that will leak information about CIA operatives as revenge? Will he disregard poor victims of a hurricane? What exactly will he do? I have heard the same fears about Stephen Harper yet I have not seen the devil yet.

Steve
March 18, 2008 / 15:47

I can think of about 3 Trillion reasons why anybody would be an improvement over Bush. And that's only about the war in Iraq.

PartyPooper
March 18, 2008 / 16:21

"...it’s amazing how race keeps forging its way into the campaign..."

in case you haven't figured it out yet, playing the race card will work for you every time... unless your white, then you're just a racist.

Jon in Buffalo
March 18, 2008 / 16:35

Andrew:
BS, BS and more BS, my friend.
The war was just and so was the intelligence--which, by the way was agreed to by the Clintons and their cronies. it was correct at the time. We took too long going after them and they had time to move the WMD's to Syria. Bet on it.
No one disregarded hurricane victims--except their own families, by not making them leave. They knew the score when they lived there and its a terrible tragedy, but it ain't Bush's fault. Sorry.
Obama is now unelectable. Hillary is a dangerous socialist and McCain is a closet liberal who buys this global warming hoax.

We're screwed.

mike (Buffalo Boy)
March 18, 2008 / 19:38

If Barack gets the boot for this minor crap then our country deserves John McCain and the crap that will continue with a conservative George W. Bush Like Administration. McCain is no better than Bush and probably Bush's Equal intellectually.
If any one who has posted on this can even once remember BArack Obama saying one negative thing about his country then attack him, it wasnt him that said anything, it was his reverend, and last time I checked he cant stop another person from speaking in a country that is supposed to be about free speech.

Andrew
March 19, 2008 / 07:47

Jon..how brainwashed are you? The Pentagon has agreed there was no proof to the WMDs. Zero. And if the WMDs (which they were not) were moved to Syria..why hasn't the US moved into Syria. Your false statements are gross and misleading and blantantly false.

As for Katrina, everyone knows the US screwed up. Again it is a fact and not an opinion and to disregard the facts is truly ignorant.

If you actually listened to Obama's speech yesterday you would know he is not unelectable. His speech was powerful and the truth.

Last point, Clinton supported the wat. Okay...your point? She was wrong and I hope she doesn't win the nomination. She is an idiot.

Jon in Buffalo
March 19, 2008 / 08:33

Andrew:
Hmmm...let's see why hasn't the US moved into Syria? Let's see....maybe because we moved into Iraq to depose a genocidal terrorist and everyone is giving us CRAP for it? Personally, I'd love it if we would just mop up over there, but....
So, my 'false statements are blatantly false'? Okay, Andrew, whatever you say.
'Everyone knows the US screwed up' in New Orleans? You're general statements are very general, not to mention falsely false. But, I'm sure you KNOW exactly what happened.
I did listen to Obama's speech. The one thing he did NOT do was condemn this guy. Frankly, I would never vote for him regardless, but he certainly is unelectable now. Oh, wait, you said it was "powerful and the truth"...so I defer to your expertise.
'Clinton supported the war' My point? The intelligence was correct at the time and both sides thought so.(Imagine if I say to my child: I believe you have drugs in your room, so in a few weeks or so I will invade your room to search it. What do you think would happen during that interval?)
Bush did NOT unilaterally decide to go into Iraq. he had Congressional approval.
Hillary was wrong, Bill was wrong, his CIA was wrong and EVERYONE WAS WRONG....EXCEPT ANDREW.
okay, pal. Keep drinking the Kool Aid.

The only thing we DO agree on is that Hllary is an idiot.
But, she's a shoo-in to be elected -- you're wrong about that, too.

Andrew
March 19, 2008 / 09:22

Jon..I still don't get the Kool-Aid comment. It makes no sense.

If you did listen to Obama's speech then you would have heard him condemn Wright's comments. He made that pretty clear. He didn't condemn him as a person because he does have a relationship with him. Just as I would condemn my father's words about things but not him as a man.

Do I know what happenned in New Orleans? No. Do I know what did not happen? Yes. The warnings about the dykes were ignored. The move to help the people was slow. Bush waited a week to go to the site.

The WMDs are ny in Syria. I think you're on the Kool-Aid. Show me once creditble source of intelligence that proves that point. There is none becuase there were none.

Yes comparing drugs in a child's room which can be removed in a pair of pants is very simillar to moving WMDs that can be tracked by Satellites. I guess once they knew there were there they didn't bother keeping an eye on them. Okay.

The US screwed up in Katrina, period.

All that genetically modified food the US et's it population eat explains Jon's views

Jon in Buffalo
March 19, 2008 / 13:06

(with apologies to Freddie for my lengthy posts....)

Andrew, let me explain and I'll use small words.
The Kool Aid reference is from the famous (to people other than you, apparently) Guyana Tragedy where the followers of the "reverend" Jim Jones committed suicide by drinking poison rather than abandon their "cult" following of the "savior" Jones. They gave the poison to to their children in Kool-Aid.

In New Orleans, what DID happen is that these people knew for YEARS that a hurricane could come and do this. They talked about it all the time (including to tourists like myself when I visited in 2003). What DID happen was that when they got warning and WERE TOLD TO LEAVE, over 800,000 people decided " Gee, maybe we should leave" and were successfully evacuated. The other idiots CHOSE TO STAY and (unfortunately and tragically) paid the price.
Those remaining looted and destroyed much of their own city.
What DID NOT happen is that the National Guard was not called in by President Bush--BECAUSE THE GOVERNOR HAS TO REQUEST IT. (silly or not, that's the law) What DID happen was that she did NOT call them in because she is an idiot (and also a Democrat, which likely factored into her decision not to ask for help from a Republican).
What DID happen is that when called, the government responded, but by then it was too late. FEMA personnel could not land because lawless scumbags were roaming the streets with weapons.
What DID happen is that the President waited a week to tour the site because it was a MAJOR SECURITY risk for him to be there before then.

As for the WMD's, if tracking them with a satellite was possible, then certainly that would have been a major part of the pre-war intelligence THAT EVERYONE AGREED UPON. But, unless there was a GPS on the WMD, you can't track that way.

You see, satellite photos are at the mercy of weather, for one thing. And anything that is underground or sufficiently hidden (listen carefully) DOESN'T SHOW UP ON A SATELLITE PHOTO.

I'd say this is like talking to a 6-year old, but that would be unfair--most 6-year olds are smart enough to understand everything I just said.

Sorry, if it's troublesome for you. Just keep drinking your Obama/Democratic Party/Anti-Anything-Bush Kool Aid and have fun.

Andrew
March 19, 2008 / 13:20

Jon you are a stereotype. Live in your ignorance.

Saying anything to you is pointless you are so wrapped up in yourself that you cannot see facts. Have a good life.

Argie
March 19, 2008 / 14:15

Andrew: Jon did answer your questions – rather well I might add. The one thing no one mentions is that if Saddam didn’t have WMDs why did he refuse the inspectors entrance into Iraq? If he didn’t have them ever, he would have welcomed them as it would have avoided his ouster and later death. I don’t think Saddam has insane – he was just plain evil. I believe like many Iraq possessed WMDs but wisely moved them to another country.

While there was no link with Iraq and al quaeda, it has been documented he had provided funds to Palestinian suicide bombers’ families as their reward. The invasion was justified as Saddam called Bush’s bluff. Bush showed him the cards he was holding by invading and removing his govt.

Jon in Buffalo
March 19, 2008 / 14:31

Thank you Argie.
Your point about refusing inspectors is well taken, and one that I forgot.
Nice to know SOMEONE gets it.

mike (Buffalo Boy)
March 19, 2008 / 22:01

Jon, the Pentagon just released documents clearly showing NO connection, NONE between IRAQ/Saddam Hussein and Al Qaida, stop being a blind supporter of the lies of President Bush. There were no ties financially and no ties period, read the pentagon papers that were just released. Bush fabricated this whole war around lies.

Jon in Buffalo
March 20, 2008 / 08:10

You're right, Mike.
We shouldn't have gone in to remove a dangerous psychopath from power in a dangerous region that has proven it is incapable of governing itself.
We should have allowed Saddam to keep killing his own people and rewarding terrorists who kill us and our allies.
I'm sure the 300,000+ of his own people that he murdered feel the same way...

The only Bush I will criticize for the Iraqi situation is the first one. We should have finished the job in '91.

Even though you're wrong, you are also from Buffalo, so I'll end on a positive note: Did ya see that Sabres game last night? Awesome win!

One question that usually met with a roll of the eyes, the gnashing of teeth, and finally a reluctant sigh, if we know that can not understand the importance of the humble pocket. But if you think, seen in its simplest form, the handbag more than one memory device to why women love their handbags so much?
