Too Funny

March 18, 2008 @ 09:32

Back in 2001 I thought it rather odd that the International Olympic Committee would choose Beijing over Toronto for the 2008 Olympics.

After all, given China’s horrific record of human rights, why would you want to bring all the athletes of the world together in a country that oppresses its people?

I’m sure it was money.

I'm sure enough people within the IOC got thick brown envelopes which made their decision rather easy. Go into the communist country that brutalizes its people instead of coming to a place like Toronto, which if nothing else, is a model of racial harmony, human rights and freedom.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the right people were paid off back in 2001 because I think bringing the Olympic Games to Toronto would have been a financial nightmare, only heightened by the whack job mayor and socialist council that currently has control.

But that’s not my point.

The IOC should never have considered China in the first place, and I find it deliciously ironic that there’s a growing call for a boycott this summer because of what’s going on in Tibet.

I’m not a fan of the Olympics so I could care less what happens this summer, but that doesn’t mean I won’t enjoy the bullshit that will take place between now and then.

The IOC is suspect to say the least and too many athletes come from countries that encourage doping and cheating.

Doping and cheating that continues to take place because some of those countries actually pay people to find ways to stay one step ahead of the rules, and the Chinese are some of the worst culprits.

Therefore, to my mind the Olympics are a waste of time and the IOC’s decision to go to Beijing in 2001 only highlights what’s wrong with the whole movement.

If a boycott happens I’ll feel bad for all the clean athletes who have trained so hard, but that sorrow will be covered by laughter.

Just more proof that the Olympics have been a joke for more than 30 years.

When are people going to wake up to the fact that China is the enemy?

If it's not human rights issues, it's trying to poison us with their lead toys and tainted food.

Not to mention the nuclear secrets sold to them in the 90's in return for illegal campaign contributions.

But Freddie is right. Toronto is better off without the IOC hanging around.

Aw Freddie - that was a winner!

March 18, 2008 / 10:46

Fred: I agree 100% with what you wrote. China is a dangerous and oppressive country what we (Canada and the most of the world) support by doing business with them. Yeah, I’ll admit many of the products I purchase come from that evil empire so I personally feel guilty about it.

When South Africa was an apartheid state they were not allowed in the Olympics. Its time the IOC ban China from the Olympics. Of course that won’t happen because of the money that can be made by having the Olympics in China and the fact that they are a huge powerful country.

I wonder how long it takes for the lefties here to defend this regime while attacking the US – just watch.

Andrew
March 18, 2008 / 11:45

I don't think you'll find the "lefties" defend China Argie. China's governement cannot be defended by reasonable people. Say what you want about some left wing nutjobs, but defending China won't happen.

As for the Olympics? Who the heck cares? I see the Olympics as a waste of time, paper, and money. I would rather see the sponsors and governemnt dump all the money they spend on individual athletes that do nothing for the coutnry spent on real amatuer sports. Make the cost of playing hockey, baseball, basketball and other sports less expensive for kids to play. There is money better spent.

The Olympics are being brought to you by a country that kills people for mediating and then proceeds to sell their organs on the black market.

We boycotted Germany back in the day, but this holocaust-like behaviour seems to be O.K. with people.

Nuff said.

Andrew is onto something. Why dump millions into sports that less than one percent of our population participate in. Sports like bobsledding, ski jumping, speedwalking! All the sports that dont get one second of TV time or interest inbetween Olympic coverage.

The Olympics are tainted by corruption at the committee level, and at the doping athlete level. Canada should take a leadership position and pull out of the program and invest that money into minor sports for our children that they are actually playing.

If countries do boycott (which likely aint gonna happen) Canada and The U.K. won't be part of it...that you can put money on.

Not with both hosting the '10 and '12 Olympics. Too much politics involved for that to occur.

Could you do us a favour and boycott the 2010 in YVR. I've been working hard for low pay, my wife has taken away my rights and freedoms and I live in a province which dope is it's major crop.
PS. Thanks for the 5mil Ontario kicked in

living in Vancouver - we're two years away from hosting the 2010 Olympics. How do we know this? because our tv news reminds us of it every fucking day! they show the beautuiful side of vancouver, but if you live here, you know the real Vancouver. Junkies walking the streets along with beggars and thieves. And everyone has a theory as to what's going to happen to them. i say move 'em onto main street in downtown brampton! Kidding Freddie boy... housing is at an all time high in vancouver. a fact, 72% of everything you take home goes into paying to put a roof over your head. are we surprised that people like the East Side Coalition run around like the clowns they are and disrupt any sort of Olympic ceremonies here? the people who are surprised, they keep their eyes closed to the fact that Vancouver is nowhere near ready host an Olympics, either. Trust me Toronto, you are lucky you don't have the Olympics. Juest ask Montreal!

All Mel Lastman had to say was "I had a momentary lapse of reason." and the Olympics would've been ours. But I have to agree with Andrew, who cares anymore? They're WAYYYYY over-rated.

Trish
March 18, 2008 / 16:32

I'll be happy to see a boycott. It made me sick when Beijing won the olympic bid. Since then I've made a point of NOT buying no-name canned vegetables, cheap clothing from places like Winners, or anything that reveals itself to be a "Product of" or "Made in China". Ugh. Tainted food, Sars and rats in the kitchen... Do not go there.

I too am happy and laughing about calls for boycott for teh Olympics. It's 1936 all over again. Not only boycott the Olympics but let's get our factories out of there too (but we know that greedy CEO's who supposedly are right wing love the Communist system).

I know the "real" Vancouver quite well. I lived there for 12 months. No one asked Whistler, who is highly involved in the Vancouver/Whistler Olympics whether or not they wanted the Games... and as I remember only 53% voted YES to hosting the Games.. but that didn't stop Mr. Gordon Campbell.. who seems to think there is a surplus of money to spendon the Olympics in that city.. well when other countries get there we can show then the POOREST ZIPCODE IN NORTH AMERICA, Main and Hastings... and say "welcome to Canada"... then we can also let them know that our older population is quite "proud" of our "hero" Stephen Harper who has left of the legacy of the tar sands.. something Fred never seems to mention on his blog... getting oil out of the tar sands generates 5 times more greenhous gas than conventional oil exstaction... but Hrper doesn't care... he's even handing these people tax cuts... why? Becaues that's how the "not corrupt" Cons. operate... 70% of this oil then goes to the Divided States of Hysteria... I hope all of these things are made known to the rest of the world during the Vancouver Olympics, as this is the Canada our "leader" the great "hero" Harper endorses.

Jason – nice sugar buzz to start the day? Try unsweetened OJ
Nobody asked Whistler? Amassing a small fortune in real estate value; getting a free billion dollar highway to go skiing? What the hell did you want them to be asked about? FYI, the Province tried to make it combined bid between cities, but that is goes against IOC rulings, so it had to be Vancouver alone.
Meanwhile six-packs like me get a long over-due replacement bridge in 10 years that will be tolled and the Patullo Bridge, that is more dangerous than the sea to sky highway gets pylons down the centre lane.
Turning our nose at the Olympics is so valiant; however boycotting China’s cheap-labour goods and rationing our raw materials exports might actually send a message, but let’s not go down that road, much more appropriate to take it out on some kids that have put their heart and soul into representing your country.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

Love iPad as an eBook reader! The iBook shelf gives you a wide array of books to choose from and once you click on the selected book you want to read, it automatically prompts you to the first page. It then gives you the option to adjust the font size or the font type of your preference.
