He Prefers To Lose

February 25, 2008 @ 09:27

I guess when you get right down to it, you have to shave-away all the bullshit and admire Mats Sundin’s integrity.

He honestly doesn’t want to become a rent-a-player. He doesn’t feel joining a team in February to win a Stanley Cup in June isn’t the way to go. You’re either in it for the long haul or you can’t lay claim to the glory and you can’t argue with that.

You’d think the guy would be anxious to get out of Leaf land and join a legitimate hockey organization under any circumstances, but that’s not his make up and it looks like he’s going to have the last laugh.

Word is Sundin has also refused to sign a contract extension, which means come July, the Leafs could end up with nothing. Sundin will probably retire.

Some might think he’s being a tad selfish and even though I’ve never be a huge Sundin fan over the years, I completely back the guy in this case.

The Leafs are getting everything they deserve and underlines what a screwed up mess they are.

And when you get right down to it, Sundin is the least of their problems. Darcy Tucker, Brian McCabe, Thomas Kaberle and Pavel Kubina remain under no-trade contracts with a few years left on them.

At least with Sundin, the Leafs will be able to clear some cap space if he retires – the other guys are over-paid, un-tradable and not very good hockey players.

Yes, John Ferguson is responsible for a lot of what ails the Leafs, but let us not forget, somebody up top made the decision to hire a rookie general manager and its not like there weren't a few problems before Ferguson arrived.

So the ball is back in the court of the fans.

Stop supporting them.

I agree. Its not like he hasn't done his part which is consistently rack up the points by goals and unselfish assists. He probably will come back for one more year but this way the leafs are forced to surround him with new blood. I think his comments on tv where he said going to a team just to win a stanley when you were not there back in the beginning in sept is just not him.

You can't give a no trade then villify the guy for sticking with it. I have a gut though that he will play two more years and will resign and will go thru one rebuilding year followed by one legitimate chance at a decent team. Then retire.

The sucky team cannot be blamed on a guy who has always put up the points.

This team’s destiny will not be decided by whether Sundin is traded or not. Sure, it would have helped but he has the right to decline a trade – it was bargained when he signed his contract.

I would rather see guys like Tucker and Kubina waive their NTC. While I understand we wouldn’t receive much in return it would at least free up some much needed salary cap room. Since these slugs have refused to waive their right, I would send them down to the minors until they agree to a trade. Of course the owners would be peeing away millions but at least the rebuilding could start.

If Sundin had gone to the team prior to Christmas (when possibly they still had a chance) and demanded a trade. The Leaf Nation would have been all over him for being a traitor.

The poor guy just can't win.

I was salivating at the prospects that might come in return of Mats moving at the deadline. At first I thought his comments were the normal rhetoric that players spew as they pack thier bags. It turns out that Mats has more character than most players we have seen in any sport. I have a new found respect for a player that I had always liked, but not much more than that. He is a true leader.

Mats would benifit greatly personally by going to a contender and winning the cup. IT might be the difference of him making the Hall of Fame and not. He has the points to get in, but a Stanley Cup ring would make a sure bet.

He brings integrity to the game and might be the classiest blue and white player in 30+ years.

Bottom line, he would not have brought much to the organization as a rental trade, maybe a 2nd round draft pick. Let celebrate his skills and leadership while we can.

I agree with Dave. If a player didn't want to stay and wanted out, he would get villified for betraying his team, at least Mats has the internal fortitude and integrity to remain in TO and see it thru to the gruesome end. I personally hope he comes back to the Leafs, I'd hate to see the guy go to another team considering all that he is given to the Leafs during his career. Worst of all would be to see him go to another team, somewhere like Philly, especially if Forsberg never comes back and they decide to go with a star who is available, where they are still rebuilding and he helps them with a Cup. That would be depressing. Mats still has at least a couple of good years left in him, he should remain a Maple Leaf, and they should build around him.
As to the rest of the no-trade guys, they aren't all bad players. McCabe has had a tough year but when he comes to play, he's a tough cookie and brings an offensive aspect to his game. Kaberle is definitely the best D the Leafs have and they would be insane to get rid of him. Kabina, sure, get rid of him. Tucker, well he certainly hasn't been playing like Tucker this year, well not until recently anyway, and whether he's hurt or just not as interested anymore, he should probably be bought out at the end of the season. The Leafs can certainly afford to do that and the summer is probably the best time for the Leafs to rebuild.

You're absolutely right, Fred.

Why does it all come down on Mats Sundin ?

How unfair and pathetic.

He's done nothing but work hard for 13 years in a Leafs uniform and has conducted himself with the utmost professionalism and integrity along the way.

He's an elite player, one of the few who actually deserved to have a "No Trade" clause written in to his contract.

So now he would like to excercise his right by NOT being shipped off to a new team to participate in a hollow victory with a bunch of new guys that he doesn't care about. He doesn't want to be a rent-a-player.

I'm appalled at some of the fans who are calling in on radio talk shows claiming Sundin is selfish and should agree to move on.

What he should do is wait until July when his contract runs out, THEN sign with a new team.

At least then he can join a new team right from the start of training camp.

That might make a move a little easier for him to digest and he'd be giving all these critics just what they deserve.

Say bye to Sundin I think he has had his feelings hurt. I I think over the next 6 weeks left in the season. he will be the leafs best player.
You will see in July that he will not resign with the leafs and who can blame him.
I am sure he is thinking you don't want me in March I don't want you in July.
Maybe that is best for this team because lets face it even with Matts they still suck.
The problem is not on the ice it is in the front office and the coach behind the bench
I think Maurice is a farm league quality coach, that had a team that over played for him once in Carolina. Even then they can't win
and the leafs front office ....that goes with out saying
not since Harold Ballard ran this team. Has it been in such a mess
at least with Harold he came out and admitted winning doesn't matter
We keep hearing that "our goal is to win a Stanly cup
by the the way would you like to buy a condo"

The only way the leafs can help themselves for the future is by trading Toakala. He would net a good draft pick or young prospect. They would also lose most of there remaining games and get a good shot at the #1 pick this year. They would also suck next year when Tavares is available.
I wouldn't re-sign if I were Sundin after this mess he's had to endure. As far as the other players with no trade clauses go I guess they don't really want to win and prefer to play for a shitty organization. I don't know what that say's about them.

I see the Leafs won again tonight. They're going to win just enough games to miss the playoffs by 1 game, and miss out on the top 7 picks in the draft. They won't be able to do much at the trade deadline, maybe pick up a 2nd rounder for Gill and maybe something for Antropov and trade McCabe to Philly if they'll take him. Most of the stuff can't be done until the off season or later. They need to buy out Tucker or send him to the minors, dump Kubina in the off season during the time his no trade clause is suspended, and hope that some team is stupid enough to pick up Raycroft (although Mike Milbury isn't in the league any more).

They can't re-sign Sundin. He's making them not suck enough. He's playing great when it's too late, and that's been the culture of the Leafs for the last 3 years.

All I can say is Good Luck!

Argie

Christian’s plan makes the most sense in terms of long term building. If Raycroft plays, the Leafs will lose almost every game. And of course the draft picks would help.

The downside to it is that there’s no guarantee we’ll get Stamkos and/or Tavares. If there was, I would be OK with the Leafs totally sucking next year.
