Juno

January 21, 2008 @ 08:01

I’m not much of a movie watcher or reviewer so excuse me for being shallow when it comes to my impression of Juno, the fine little film that’s taking North America by storm.

I heard my kids talk about Juno over the past few weeks because it stars Brampton’s Michael Cera who went to the same high school as they did. In fact Michael, despite great success with Arrested Development and Superbad still spends a lot of time in his home town.

But it wasn’t until I sat and watched another Oprah Show with my wife that I made an effort to see this film. Oprah loved it. She loved everything about it, although during the entire one hour show which she devoted to Juno, she didn’t mention Cera once and she didn’t mention how Canadian the movie is.

Filmed in Vancouver, besides Cera it features a Canadian director, Jason Reitman of Montreal and a fantastic performance by a young Canadian actress from Halifax named Ellen Page.

Page is excellent in the lead role of Juno and she works very well with Cera within a screenplay that was written by first timer Diablo Cody of Chicago.

A couple of years ago Cody was a stripper in Minnesota with a passion for writing and a good friend within the movie industry recommended she write rather than strip, and she came up with Juno. It was her first attempt at a screenplay and it’s only the second feature film that Reitman as directed.

Juno was shutout at the Golden Globe Awards this past week, but it’s expected to get multiple Academy Award nominations but I can't really say whether its deserved because I haven't seen anything to compare it to.

What’s Juno about? A 16 year old girl who gets pregnant but it’s considered a comedy.

I’ll call it a very good film. Not great, but certainly not a disappointment following Oprah’s extreme praise. I enjoyed it very much.

Check it out ya buggers.

* I watch Oprah with my wife as a bonding thing, so spare me the wise cracks, ya bastards.

Now let us see how many 16 years go out and get pregnant or the ones that would have given the baby up or had abortion keep it..........I have not seen the movie but i am not sure the subject matter is something that I like, considering I live in the kawarthas and this sort of thing is the norm up here. i have a 18 year employee who gave birth to her second last year.....

I’ve heard it’s a pretty good film. I suppose I’ll wait until it’s on video to watch it despite what Oprah thinks.

Hopefully the film conveys a message to teenagers that they have to take the responsibility to not get pregnant – whether it’s through contraception or good old fashion abstinence. The last thing we need is a film that glorifies teenage pregnancy.

I heard about Juno about a month ago form co-workers, and I wanted to see it. Told my wife, who brushed it off. It wasn't until she watched Oprah that she wanted to see it. (I could go on about the influence of Oprah, but I'll leave it alone).

Regardless, this movie is very good. Very enjoyable, well written, well acted. It is not the typical Hollywood movie where everything is tied up nicely with a bow at the end and the movie finishes with everything all neat and tidy. It breaks that mold.

Best movie I've seen in a long time.

Wahlberg and Will Ferrell seem like a great team in this film. The nutty guy and the humorless normal man. That formula has been a big part of comedy for decades, even centuries.

I watched "Other Guys"" on Saturday and I've got to say that to me it was pretty f*ckin' funny. I movie. Mark Wahlberg is really serious and Ferrell is crazy so they're the ideal pair.

The Emmys was such a great episode to see. Temple Grandin was therefore touching and reflective of reality. I have worked in that autism world for over twelve years and it is fantastic to see the approach this movie has inspired countless people. I personally apprehend many folks who known as me to tell me to observe this film. Several of whom had very little data about autism before they watched, but then ended the movie with a great sense of respect for those who have autism and their families. I am all concerning attempting to share information regarding autism too and do therefore through my website (AutismClassroom.com) that aims to assist academics teach children with autism better! Congrats Temple Grandin!
