Not Enough

December 19, 2007 @ 12:32

The NHL went a long way in upholding their image as the professional “Yahoo” League today by suspending Chris Simon for only 30 games.

It’s the longest suspension in the history of the NHL, but that means nothing when you consider his long history of goonery and the latest action that put him on the sidelines.

The NHL should have suspended Chris Simon for life without given it any more than a split second of consideration. If ever there was an example of assault with a deadly weapon in a professional sport, this was it.

Simon saw Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu in a prone position and deliberately stomped on the side of Ruutu's foot with his skate blade.

No different than taking a knife or a machete from underneath his sweater and using it in the same manner. Simon knew what he was doing, he must have thought about it before he raised his leg with a sharp skate on the end of it and stomped down.

To my mind its worse than head butting, slew footing or stick swinging. None are excusable, but using a skate as a weapon takes things into a whole new stratosphere and the NHL responded in a feeble manner.

To be honest, over the years when on-ice action found its way into the courts I never really bought into it. I thought the league was capable of policing its own.

This incident is different. Chris Simon should have been criminally charged.

Simon is a meathead. The league is full of these types of guys. He should be gone for the season.

Listening to Bill Watters defend Simon by placing most of the blame on the victim (Ruutu) was hilarious.

And yes folks, I know, I'm agreeing with Fred again.

... and they wonder why hockey doesn't sell south of the border. I'm a hockey fan, and I hate that crap. I think 30 games is too light - He should have been given the year, including playoffs (which may not factor in for the Islanders).

Wayne Gretzky proved that you dont have to be the most physically gifted athlete to excel in sports. To be the best you have to be the smartest.

Chris Simon is at the other end of the spectrum. While physically gifted with size and strenght he is stupid and will never be a great. Get rid of him.

Murph, are you forgetting that Gretzky had a couple of guys making room for him on the ice? The name of Dave Semenko, Jim Korn, Marty McSorley? If it wasn't for those guys Wayne wouldn't have had so much room out there. There is room in the game for enforcers, just not stupid acts that are done when a player is in a position that he can't defend himself like Ruutu was.
And Rick, I don't understand your point about hockeuy not selling south of the border. Everytime there is a fight in a U.S. hockey game, the croud goes nuts! They love UFC and rodeo and other violent sports.

Bob McCowan recently interviewed one of the new owners of the Nashville Preds (I thinks his name is Boots Delbaggio). The guy grew up in California a hockey fan and when asked if he thinks the NHL would be better off by getting rid of fighting, he answered flatly by saying no, fighting is a big part of the game. SCARY!

I love the way you write and also the theme on your blog. Did you code this yourself or was it done by a professional? I'm very very impressed.

A Little off topic maybe, but anyway – which template are you using? I really love the CSS style.
