Your Next Prime Minister

December 20, 2007 @ 08:55

Chalk up another victory for the environment and the hysterical over-reaction this issue has created since Al Gore produced his award winning fantasy flick “An Inconvenient Truth.”

The latest Canada poll results reveal the governing Conservatives have plummeted in the polls and their environmental policy is being blamed.

Believe it or not, the wishy-washy Liberals with their limp dick leader have now passed the Conservatives in popular opinion.

The Liberals, who had 13 years to establish and act on an environmental policy – but didn’t – have 32 percent support while the Torys have plunged six points in the past week to thirty percent.

In shameful Ontario it's even worse with the Liberals holding a ten point lead, 41 to 31.

I’m not surprised because it was just over a week ago when I heard the results of another poll that said the environment has clearly become the number one issue for Canadians.

What a joke.

The only reason most Canadians say the environment is the most important issue is because it’s easy.

When asked, it’s easier to sound like a hero and blurt out “the environment” than it is to take the time to actually learn about other issues.

The environment is sexy and makes you sound like you care even though you probably take no measures to help the environment yourself. You’ve seen Gores cool movie and it made you mad at all the polluters and you want to make a statement.

You pick up newspapers like the Toronto Star and listen to people like David Suzuki and when you’re told that Stephen Harper is an enemy of the environment it makes the choice rather easy when asked what party you support. You choose Liberal.

You don’t take the time to really understand what the Prime Minister is trying to accomplish or take the time to appreciate how he’s looking out for the best interests of your country. No, that’s too hard.

Instead you just read the headlines and take from it that Stephen Harper wouldn’t sign an environment deal in Bali so he must be that rotten guy that everybody says he is.

The environment! I can only shake my head and laugh.

It’s such a bullshit issue when it comes to political polling. It’s just so fluffy. It allows people who pay no attention to politics on a day to day basis to actually feel informed and important when asked about it.

And given the extreme left wing media influence in this country, especially in Ontario, people are led to believe the Prime Minister doesn’t care about the environment, when it reality he’s actually trying to do more for the planet than the previous government did in well over a decade.

And to all those people who don't buy into Harpers strategy, and then claim he doesn't have an alternative policy - save it - because he does. It's a plan with realistic standards that holds all major polluters accountable.

Stephen Harper wants a deal, but he wants the right deal for both Canada and everybody else. It’s the right way and the only way to attack this issue.

But he’s painted as an environmental villain and it’s played out in the polls and puts us right back where we started.

In "la la land" with the lyin' Liberals.

All I can say is you're bang on Freddie. It really seems to me that whatever hot topic the media spoon feeds us becomes the focal point in most Canadians minds. We glance at a headline or two daily and form our opinions on that. The fact that these headlines are driven by a media with a heavy liberal bias ensures that the "news scanners" are going to toe the liberal line.
Does anyone else wonder why this story has received almost no attention?

We just have to keep telling anyone who will listen about the failure of the liberals on this issue while they were the government. This is a bullshit issue that is driven by people with "other" agendas. I actually have convinced some friends of this. So keep at it Freddie, we need you.

I think this is a lot deeper than the environment. Most people do not trust Harper and he keeps giving reasons to not trust him.

If the Liberals had Ignatieff at the helm, it would be no contest.

It's too bad. Harper has done some good stuff, but is he the right leader???

Some people walk around this world with "Eyes Wide Shut", many of which, frequent this blog. Not to worry folks. Mother Earth will only take so much of our Shi..t and then she will crush our sorry azzes (innocent and guilty) and replace our arrogant species with one more deserving and everything will turn out all right. Joy to the World.

Harper should have signed it and reaped the good press. Then he could have ignored the agreement for the rest of time he is in office. Much like the Liberal Party did with the Kyoto agreement during their time in office.

Fred, I agree with you 100 %.
Murph, your idea sounds good but that would just put the Conservatives on the same level as the Liberals.

Bottom line is, I am close to retirement so I don't give a rats ass what happens to our economy if the bleeding hearts get their way and start forcing the industry to conform to unreasonable targets.

Yes, we all know, we can't keep on doing what we are doing, but people, the pollution problem was not created over night, so what makes these bleeding hearts and activists think that you can erase the damage in a couple of years????

If our actions are going to be too agressive, we will have cleaner air a lot faster, mainly because half the population will sit on their ass without a job.

You might be right about Dion being useless Freddie, however the Conservative government has as much a clue about the environment as MLSE has about running a successful hockey operation.

There is a clear lack of vision and clarity. If we subscribe to the American stance where we leave it in the hands for the next generation and the generation after that, when will the time come for it to be too late and even if it is not, how much more will the cost be.

Through every major revolution that has passed in this country - the industrial, automation, computers, people have been scared that the presence of something new will kill off jobs and the economy. Truth is that new innovations lead to new jobs and new sectors of the economy.

The environment is not an issue of party leadership, it is a total lack of leadership in this country.

PS

I love it when your blog pisses me off.

Hey Rob,

Read Tim's comment again. He never claims that the Liberals did anything good. Why is it that when you critique the government you are assumed to be a supporter of the opposition?

Rob,

Both the Liberal and Conservative governments have failed the Canadian public in regards to the environment. The Liberals talked a good game and crapped the bed, while the Conservative government has been well impotent to the issue to the point where no quantity of viagra or ciallis could help them.

The environment should not be a partisan issue. Every so often we should tuck in our colors and come to resolutions that best serve our country and those who shall inherit it.

My point is very simple, when it comes to the environment, we fail as a nation. Not only is there a climate and landscape to save, there is an assload of money to be made in doing so and bringing on new innovations and technology. All parties should be able to find a way to agree on a solution.

Some months ago I decided to delay good for a holiday. The last time I had been missing for a long time had was five years ago. After my first year of college, my parents generously sponsored me to go on tour in Europe. I visited eight countries in fourteen days, and stayed in hostels the whole time. The Womens Handbags Wholesale that I brought my backpack was the confidence. On the advice of some experienced travelers, a Canadian flag sewn me in my backpack. Everyone loves Canadians, eh!
