Irene's An Arshole

December 6, 2007 @ 09:43

On Tuesday NDP MP Irene Mathyssen stood up in the House of Commons and accused Conservative James Moore of looking at a scantily clad woman on his laptop on Tuesday.

Mathyssen claims she saw the image on Moore’s computer when she stood to address the house.

“I saw the member from Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam with a laptop on his desk. It was open and on the screen was an image of a scantily clad woman. This was in my clear view and in the clear view of the public,” Ms. Mathyssen said.

At the time she had no proof of what she saw and nobody else saw it but she didn’t hesitate to take large steps towards ruining Moore’s career by getting overly dramatic and jumping to extreme conclusions with this little gem.

“I feel very strongly that this is not only disrespectful of women, but it's disrespectful of this House. It reflects an attitude of objectifying women, and we know that when women and other human beings are objectified and dehumanized, they become the objects of violence and abuse.”

How’s that for being a hysterical whack job? But there’s more.

Noting government cuts to a number of women's programs, Mathyssen said that Moore's actions added to the impression that the Conservative government is no friend of women.

It was even worse, she said, that it was coming up to the 18th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, in which a lone gunman killed 14 women at a city college.

"When a member of the House sits in the House and uses this kind of material, I think it's very clear that this lack of respect is something we need to be very concerned about," she said.

Wow! Mathyssen took an image that she claimed to see on a computer and turned it into violence and abuse against women and then linked it to the Montreal massacre. A bit of a leap I’d say.

And while we’re at it, nuts to Liberal MP Karen Redman who stood up and gave her two cents worth without having any more proof than Mathyssen.

“This is a serious allegation” said Redman. And then she proceeded to link it to the Montreal massacre.

Bullshit.

"Serious" is taking an alleged incident of very little consequence and blowing it way out of proportion with little or no regard for another politician’s reputation.

But here’s the best part. After claiming that he had no idea what Mathyssen was talking about, it finally dawned on Moore that Mathyssen must have seen a picture of his girlfriend in a bathing suit and when he offered this explanation she immediately apologized and promised to apologize in the house.

But the damage had been done and it displayed politics at its worst.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!!!! I am so sick and tired of men being bashed by women like this. Women who think ALL men are potential mass murderers because we look at pictures of our wives and girlfriends at the beach we must be up to no good. And you KNOW if the roles were reversed, Irene Mathyssen would've been the victim. Don't kid yourselves, you know it's true.

Perfect title Freddie.

What a dumb cow The Tory's should ask for her resignation on the grounds of stupidity
How do you go off half cocked, at something that you think you seen and with out talking to your boss first.
If Layton had any balls he would asked here to step a sided.

No surprise she's NDP - a party so obsessed with political correctness that it will eventually choke itself to death (if we're lucky). The campaign to discredit the conservatives has grown very tired and is, quite frankly, absurd. Even if it wasn't Moore's girlfriend, so what? It has nothing to do with the Montreal massacre. What we have here is an ignorant woman who probably doesn't believe half the things she says, but does so to make a name for herself. All she's done is damage her own party, hijack an unfortunate anniversary, and make women look bad.

Talk about extreme reactions Freddie. Take a look in the mirror folks. What was he doing looking at vacation pictures while the house was in session. Guess he isn't too interested in his job or his responsibilities as an MP. There is a time & place for everything & he displayed poor jugement. He should be appologizing to the house and the public !

Hey Deb, so you are saying that you have never looked at a personal email while you are at work. GIVE ME A BREAK! stop being so rightious!! Everyone does it, even you i am sure! Not everyone is into working everyday! Give him a break!
Who cares where he was, he is being accused of looking at something that he wasnt and now is being linked to the Montreal Massacre.

Deb - according to the news accounts:

"The incident began when Mathyssen (London-Fanshawe) alleged that Tuesday night, just before Parliament was to adjourn for the day, she spotted Moore viewing photos on his laptop computer in the Commons."

Seems you just assumed the guy was kicking back for the entire session. Hasn't there been enough of jumping to conclusions?

Women like Mathysen, Redman and yes, you too Deb, give the rest of us a bad name. Your knee-jerk, feminist ndp political correctness makes us all look like idiots.

What I'd like to know is this: why did Mathysen backtrack? If she feels so strongly about the objectification of women, then why should it matter whether the woman on the laptop was his girlfriend, or just an internet image...

Throw them out - both of them...

If there was a picture af a man in a pair of shorts with no shirt on, on her computer, i'll bet that there would be no news story about this at all....but God Forbid!! a man has a pic of a woman in a bathing suit on his pc then all hell breaks loose!!!!.....My God how woman can be such femi-nazi losers these days!....More male bashing i see???

I see that Layton merely said in her defence that he wasn't there when it happened, and that she has a duty to speak out if she sees something objectionable.

Come on! She was snooping at another member's e-mail, and like a kid in kindergarten decided to tell the teacher about what she thought she saw...

If you want to tell Matthyssen, personally, what an ass she made of herself her email address is mathyi@parl.gc.ca. I like that, once again, the NDP have made fools of themselves, I just hope the retractions get as much media attention as the accusations.
Somehow, I doubt it.

I certainly hope they don't run into any firemen selling risky fireman calanders in any of the malls over the Christmas season.
They would likely try to have the firemen fired!

That's Embarrassing that individuals now let Extremist Foreign Political People on our soil right after many years of hatred towards our land. The united states should get free from the UN and teach each one of these extremists our opinion of there riduculous ideology. Qaddafi, Ahmadinejad, Chavez, and others have far to long been welcomed to this Sacred and Exceptional nation. I say Enough is enough, Close up our doors to Hateful Bastards and Say No more to the U.N. Get out, your NOT nor have never been made welcome.
