Look After Your Own

November 28, 2007 @ 09:59

We get word this morning that the Toronto District School board has released yet another "report" and it says students in Canada's largest school board feel alienated.

In a nutshell the report points out that seven out of ten kids are non-white and they don't see themselves reflected in the curriculum and of course now there's been a connection made between alienation and achievement.

The TSB will now scramble to make things all better by introducing "an aggressive staff development initiative" to help teachers bring a range of cultural perspectives into class.

There will be meetings and forums and think tanks and more meetings and I'm sure some expensive lunches and dinners along the way.

Meanwhile somebody has to come up with a game plan that will involve all students and all cultures and that should be a tall order. How do you do that? How do you bring "all cultures" into the curriculum without getting bogged down along the way?

Call me crazy, old fashioned and ignorant, but I don't care. If people want their kids to learn about their "culture" it should be done at home.

It works, and I speak from experience.

My wife's family moved from South Africa in the 1960's and they left to escape Apartheid. My mother in law couldn't remain in a country where her children were given ceilings. They could only go to certain schools in South Africa and then only certain Universities.

They had these restrictions because they were classed as "coloured", as matter of fact, my wife's South African birth certificate has the word "coloured" stamped right across it.

My in-laws wanted more for their kids with no limits and no restrictions so they found their way to good old Canada through England.

They came to Canada with nothing. They lived in a small apartment on Midland Avenue in Scarborough with nothing more than a few mattresses on the floor, but they were happy to be in Canada and rather than bitch and complain and find fault, they made Canada work for them.

They both got jobs and my wife and her two brothers went to school. It was back in the days when most classes were lily white so don't speak to me about alienation in 2007.

My wife Delyse was a visible minority with an English accent and at 12 years of age she was plunked right into a class room on a cold day in February.

But funny thing is, it all turned out OK. A strong family unit saw this family furnish their apartment, then move to a better one and then buy a house and then buy a business.

The kids went to school and her parents didn't complain about the curriculum because they were just happy to be in a great and free country. They were more than happy to adopt the ways and customs of their new country.

When it came to heritage the kids would ask questions at home and get all the information they needed, in fact my wife got enough information about South Africa in the 60's that she has no desire to visit the country in which she was born.

The point is, we sure waste a lot of time in this country today looking after the peripheral needs of so many and I hate to keep bashing a dead horse but I have to; it all comes back to the home.

There are so many bleeding hearts hell bent to supply excuses for every squeaky wheel in the country it becomes regressive.

Look after your own and the rest will look after itself.

Amen Fred!

I always get a laugh out of people who complain that they're disadvantaged living in Canada. They use this as their reason why they break the law, why they don't get a job, why they father a child and then take off. Education, health care and room and board are guaranteed to everyone living in Canada - regardless as to whether they're a citizen or not. These losers do not have a legitimate excuse for being criminals other than the fact they're LOSERS!!!

if you want to learn about your culture in the schools then go back to the country that you came from. I dont think it should be introduced at all. There are too many cultures out there to have to include any of them into the classroom. What they should look at is History classes then. They may need to make that the course or subject in school that is affected by this bullshit. I went to school to learn the basics and I learned what was taught. I am white but what culture is that? I have too many other things in my background to really focus on anything and depending on what you believe in, what your faith is then that could be a factor into what culture you are. I send my children to school to learn about math, science, and art no about the cultures of the world. If that is the case then maybe that needs to be a subject in school. So everyother week or every week they are learning about another culture. But what age should this be introduced? So will my kids get anything out of learning about someones culture probably but how much will they learn when they are learning about each culture so quickly because there are so many. Or you could do it by grades. Grade one you introduce four different cultures, and then grade two the same. When highschool hits maybe it needs to be added as a course. But then again are we losing ourseleves into believeing that when the kid goes home to say that they are learning about the culture in Iraq or somewhere there is war that it will be accepted. I dont think that my 5 year old should be exposed to the fact that women in some countries are punished because they get raped. Espically when I want to teach her that if this ever to happen then you must say something so that the person who did it could be held accountable and in Canada you wont be punished. So will there be a consent form sent home with kids asking permission if it is ok to be listening to the subject matter in the schools? If I want to expose my children to different cultures or others I think it should be done at home. Now with the computer age with one click of the mouse I can take them anywhere in the world. It is such a debatable thing that it should not be even considered. That is why their are faith based schools because you cant teach religion at regular public schools. that is part of my childrens culture to have faith so why can that be taught. If we teach cultures will that open the doors that now we have to teach all the faiths that are in the cultures. If you dont like the way kids are learning then home school them, you dont have time then too bad. I want my kids to go to school to learn about things that will help them to get a good job, to learn about the history of what went on in the past in certain parts of the world. You change this and you open the flood gates of having culture based schools.....It is all crazy

My Mother is still a teacher with one year left till retirement. I have enough stories to write a book about how ethnic minorities piss all over the freedoms that are open to everyone and demand more and more.

Some examples include, accusations of a teacher being racist towards a black child because he gets sent to the office daily and no other kid does. Reason - - the kid daily hits other children kicks my teachers lunchroom supervisors and anyone in authority and swears at anyone in the classroom. The mother also won't look to her own house where there 6 kids with a 7th on the way. 3 different father of course. Oh and this particular child has 18 half brothers and sisters from the father alone. They live in govenrment subsidized housing as well and the mother doesn't work either and the father lol well he has a PO box so that the tax man doesn't come to kick them out of the subsidized housing because he makes enough money, and he spends half his time sleeping somewhere else in case they do come. Yet she blames the school for not doing more to help her child learn and integrate. Oh and this mother refuses to help this child and the other 4 in the school do their nightly homework because she thinks that's the teachers job. Also compound the fact taht they came to parent teacher interviews reaking of weed. But it's the school boards fault their kids don't learn and have behaviour problems

Other parents complain that Junior kindergarten or rather any teachers should do more to help teach their child english. Problem is the parents don't know any english after being here ten years and need a translator to come to the school to tell the principal their issue.

School and culture two seperate entities. If your parents can decide to teach their kids the native tongue from back home and never bother with english they can teach their kid about the culture at the same time.

Some examples include of the race card being pulled in conjunction with a black child, because he gets sent to the office daily and no other kid does. Reason - - the kid daily hits other children kicks teacher's lunchroom supervisors and anyone in authority and swears at anyone in the classroom. The mother also won't look to her own house where there 6 kids with a 7th on the way, 3 different fathers of course. She has the nerve to blame the school for not doing more to help her child learn and integrate. Oh and this mother refuses to help this child and the other 4 in the school do their nightly homework because she thinks that's the teachers job. Also compound the fact that they came to parent teacher interviews reeking of weed. But it's the school boards fault their kids don't learn and have behavior problems

I had other examples but they keep getting bounced back by the site.

If you live in a country you should expect that the majority of your education in that country will be about that countries history. Granted that Social studies, foreign language classes may venture into other cultures but for the most part you need to learn that countries history and current events if you expect to be productive in that country when you get done with school.

Freddie P is right again!

Enough of all this cultural sensitivity crap. Geez, Canada even ruined "Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader", by making sure we had the appropriate racial/cultural balance with the kids and appropriate regional representation.

Just let people be people. Come to Canada, respect the traditions of others, and STOP demanding special treatments, rights or considerations. Guess what, nobody else really cares!!
