My Great Uncle was a member of the Winnipeg Grenadiers. They were the 4th Batallion/Brigade who went up the toughest part of the hill that morning and suffered the heaviest losses that day. He was hit in the leg but made it back home to serve again in WW2.
He and my Grandfather, who also served in the Great War, didn't talk much about it...mostly they would say that was something no person should ever experience.
We gave my Uncle a copy of Pierre Burton's "Vimy" for Christmas the year it came out. That day he sat down and read it cover to cover.
I still have his copy of the book and his discharge medal from the war. I take great pride for their service and always offer my humble thanks to them...especially every April 9th and November 11th.

The Great War touched everyone involved. First allow me to preface my comments by saying I am Canadian born and raised and my Grandfather was at Vimy, however he was on the German side. He lived a full life and died in the late 1970's but I remember how vigorously he disapproved of war, especially the glamorization of war, he would (through tear filled eyes) tell us “there is absolutely nothing at all glamourous about warâ€. He told us once how his lieutenant shot one of my grandfather's best friends, in cold blood, for charging out of a foxhole to cross a the field of battle in a human wave. This murderous act was explained to him later - his friend was suppose to march (not run) across the field as running would disburse the line. He was told walking into machine gun fire as a group would kill less soldiers in the long run than having everyone run like chickens with there head's cut off. I suppose I should be grateful for his experiences as he immigrated his family (including my father then 5) to Canada in 1937 after listening to the hype of war generated by the new ruling party, the Nazi Party.

It is great that we are remebering this triumphant, but horrific event. Many times, we forget the sacrifices made by our young men and women because it was so long ago. I won't forget because my Grandfather, Andrew Forbes Patterson and my father Frederick Dean Patterson were in the 1st and 2nd world wars, respectively and for that, I am very, very, proud. Thank you for remembering.

Brings a huge lump to my throat. We will never understand exactly what these brave men and women went through. Commen link from all involved is they did not want to talk about it. This in itself should tell us how horrific these 2 wars were!
Let us not forget the brave service men and women of todays Armed Forces!

Stupid is just as stupid does...this whole thing really is a joke. Lindsay Lohan will go on to do detrimental drugs for the reason that the woman won't "get it"...The complete courts system is a joke. You should put the girl in some jail in Cincinnati or elsewhere in Ohio where you don't have overcrowding then there is no useless program that on a regular basis let's them get away with ****. At the very least if she is going to continue on to do narcotics she need to be "shrewd" about it instead of get arrested...or else, keep going with what you are doing Lindsay and we'll drop you in Afghanistan with remarkably daring troops who sadly are losing their life day-after-day to provide you with your dumb so-called "liberty".
