Last Week On The Bill Watters Show

November 26, 2007 @ 08:38

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the people at Standard Broadcasting and Corus Entertainment for giving me the opportunity to host the Bill Watters Show several times over the last couple of months.

It was a lot of fun, and working with Bill is something I won't soon forget.

Watters is a special breed of Canadian personality, much like Don Cherry. However unlike Cherry, Watters is well spoken, articulate and possesses a much larger background in sports.

Bill is definitely on to something with his new show now positioned in afternoon drive.

On Saturday afternoon I hosted a Grey Cup charity event for Weber Barbeques on Front St. and I was amazed at how many people told me they had heard me on Bill's show.

It reminded me of the early days of MOJO radio when it seemed that every guy over 35 years old had discovered the station and claimed it as their new favourite.

The persistent question has always been; can Toronto support two sports radio stations especially after the disaster that was the Team 1050.

Well in this case I think it can because am 640 is not full time sports, and the Watters Show seems to be gaining a reputation as a nice alternative to the other sports offering in town.

As solid and established as the other show is, the Bill Watters Show is hockey centric with a more "fun" approach. Again, that's not to take anything away from Prime Time Sports because it's top notch quality, but the Watters show offers a distinct alternative that seems to be gaining a lot of steam.

There may not be room for two sports radio stations in town, but there's definitely room for the Bill Watters Show.

Hey Freddie

I usually listen to Prime Time sports on my drive home, but whenever I know you're doing the Watters show I tune in. It was a pleasure listening to you last week.

Cheers.

You did a great job Freddie. I listened, told all my friends to listen and everyone says the same thing, you and Watters make a great team.

Great job Freddie!

What I like about the Watters show is that it sticks to sports. I often find with McCown's show they veer off on uninteresting and unfunny tangents. McCown and his guest hosts (always his buddies like Brunt or Kelley) will go over what they did on the weekend. At that point I turn the station to 640 and if they have a commercial, I go to CFRB.

If radio hosts want to go off on a tangent and discuss their personal lives, please be funny or interesting. I hope McCown is reading this……

I enjoyed you last week on the show Freddie. I like to listen to the Watter's show because of the focus on hockey although I dont care much for Bloody Nose Billy. You could put a half dozen hockey personalities in there and the show would fly just as well.

If they don't get rid of Watters,I will be changing.
He is alright when he has some one of sound sports knowledge to help him.
but some of the host they have brought in are so one dimensional
If its not hockey they are lost and end up asking very generic questions about there dog and cats
The best duo for me would Bill Hayes and Freddie P
sorry Billy not personal
you do a good job on hockey but you lack with other sports

Hockey personalities I would rather hear teamed up with Fred:

- Elliot Friedman
- Damien Cox
- Michael Landsberg (yes this guy is good on the radio)

Murph and Jim you guys are off the mark. Watters insite is amazing he's been a player an agent a manager and an owner in several different sports. I love listening to Wilbur and Freddie they seem to get along really well.

How can you not like Watters, everything he says comes from first hand experience.

Prime time is a better more well rounded program, when it comes to non hockey topics. I am getting real tired real fast hearing about the leaf woes ( I am a fan and i am well aware of the problems)and they go in to in depth reporting when someone on the leafs has a hang nail!

I'd rather listen to Freddie and Mike Stafford on non-sports issues that would be one awesome team.

Stafford was talking about this blog on his show this morning, about the sports college posting.

AS I said he is good if it is just hockey and has a strong co host
but leave his comfort zone and he starts to squirm and that comes through on the Radio

Bill Watters is very knowledgeable about the game, and his resume is impressive. Just ask him.

I'm more of a sports fan than a hockey fan in particular .. and I don't really get 640. It seems like they waste good hosts with weird scheduling and a weird format (apparently the format is newstalk/leafs)

It was great to hear Fred, and I do like Bill Watters a lot, but I have to say I really prefer the Fan. It should go back to Mojo...that was a good alternative.

If I tune in tonight and Watters is with another guy I've never heard of before, I'm gone.
you could always count on Marek being there and thats what made the show good and it was good to hear Freddie all last week. Why change again. it sounds like Freddie enjoys Bill.

Mr Watters (whom I've known of since his days at Orr-Walton Sports Camp) is indeed intelligent. I have found him fair-minded, quick-thinking, direct to the point.

Don't you take great delight in famous person news? Never enjoy it? Do you realy take very long lunches from jobs when you know how the recent issue of Vogue will hit the newstands? I want to discover the amount of everyone actually find famous person gossip compelling, and just how many really consider the passion in it plain stupid.

Individuals really need another person to put on a pedestal and glamorize ; I would not . Those who find themselves celebrated for being famous fill up a ridiculous amount of space in our lives and are also far too overpayed.

I can not help but think there are more useful challenges toward which you should be directing our interest as well as our options. How many newspaper pages are diminished with full-color images of numerous the famous people, and how much data transfer useage is destroyed daily by incessant ramblings of super star groupies?

Celebrities get every thing presented to them so readily but they don't think about the people who are out here having financial problems, persons getting killed evicted rotting in jail despite the fact that they were given the whole world in they palm but i reckon that people won't always wrestle for a much better tomorrow where i reside at a tomorrow isn't always assured . And their teenagers have it so god damn very simple and even now ungrateful man i'd Murder for advantage.

My friend and I are always talking on the way this blog has evolved over time. I like reading what you have to say and although I’m mainly just a reader and never make comments, I decided to take a step out of my norn and thank you for the well written articles that you release. I just wish at that you would take a little more time and break down in detail some of the things you discuss because the average Joe probably wouldn’t understand.
