Any shame for the CBSA who have yet to comment on their actions?
Any shame for the RCMP who lied about the incident up to the video release?
Any shame for the security guards and the cops that did less than the public to try to defuse the situation?
Shame shame…we all know your name
IAN BUSH (I will use the least favorite phrase - google him)
November 19, 2007 / 10:17
if this gentleman was so calm why were the police called in? why did the security guards stand there ?
Every one assumed that he spoke Russian did anybody think to see were he was traveling from boarding pass luggage tags?.
oh.... I am sorry everyone was afraid to approach him, but we expected the police to put them selfs in harms way.
There is lot a problems with what happened but not all the blame should be put on the RCMP.
Why did this glory hog who went to great lengths to video this whole thing do nothing at all to help defuse this situation? if he was so calm why video tape the the guy?.
I believe the saying
"a picture is worth a thousand words" but a video is worth a million Dollars.
We are all so critical of others but none of us are willing to help out in these situations.
you should support all law enforcement and not paint them all with the same brush people make mistakes. With out them you would have a much bigger problem
November 19, 2007 / 12:30
Congratulations to the scumbag who videotaped this -you got exactly what you were hoping for: the money shot. Did it ever occur to you that your freaking camera pointed at him might have exacerbated his aggravation?
November 19, 2007 / 13:36
Pam... The camera didn't agitate him he was never looking at the camera. What agitated him was being 10 hours in the airport without a sole person to talk to and not receiving any hope that he was getting out. Once again this is an international airport why was there no one there that could speak to him in polish or russian if that's what they thought he spoke. I can understand waiting 2-5 hours but when you get to 10 someone dropped the ball. I blame the airport not the officers who took him down.
In my previous job I travelled all over and I was lucky enough to spend nearly 5 hours during one of my travels at Toronto Pearson Airport waiting in the US office to get a work Visa. I'm telling you right now had I spent another 5 hours there even speaking english I probably would have gone off worse than this guy.
I guess I don't understand how this guy video taping this was a scum bag. Do all of you travel enough to see the paranoia and problems that exist in airports. People have to worry about themselves in airports, not other people. I know that sounds selfish, but it's a simple truth airports are constantly on high alert and the last thing anyone wants to do is have anything cut short based on whats happening to another passenger. So if you have spent enough time in airports like I have the last nobody wants to get involved in another travellers problem, because as stupid as it sounds people are always wondering if that person next to them could a be a terrorist and no one needs to get involved with another passenger that is losing their cool.
Everyone handled this situation poorly after the fact, while I agree that 2 taserings was a bit much considering that the guy made no attempt to attack the officers, but I digress. The fact that people in the know tried to portray a different picture of how the events transpired leaves something to be questioned. I wrote in the previous posting something that agrees with what he said today. The cops and RCMP are out there doing wonderful things on a daily basis to help protect us. The unfortunate thing is the sensationalization of events like this one. Do I think this was bad judgement on the four officers that were there? Completely. Do I think he even deserved to be tasered in the first place? No I don't believe he did. Yet it happened.
I don't blame the person who videotaped this or any of the people watching the events transpire. I don't blame the RCMP/police for the death. I blame that airport and his mother. Where the hell was this woman during all of this? In 10 hours she couldn't have called back to poland to see if he was there when she was told that he didn't make the flight. I mean come on people if they can page MR Stevenson for the flight he's about to miss you don't think they could have paged for this guy to find out where he is?
November 19, 2007 / 14:23
Frank please follow this link and tell me where it says that International airports are responsible for providing translators
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_airport
Was there some there that spoke?
Hebrew, how about German , pig Latin
We know there was no one there that spoke Russian
WE have two official languages in this country French and English
I would think that if you are going to move to another country that you should make some attempt to learn the Language even in its most basic form
How was he going to communicate with people with out his mother there to help him?
This is sad but Frank I am glad to see you recognize that the mother is as much at fault as the RCMP, the airport authority , the security and the gentleman that taped this whole thing
November 19, 2007 / 15:11
@ Jim and Frank
Just a reminder, the mother WAS at the airport. When she went to the authorities to find out where her son was she was told to go home because he was not on the flight. She lives about 5 hours drive away.
Please read some of the local BC coverage of the events and you won't make some of these terribly wrong accusations against a grieving mother.
PS. there was a translator at the airport when he cleared customs.
@ Pam - without that video tape the RCMP would have continued to lie about their actions. It is proven that they had lied about the details up to the release of the tape. The guys a hero for standing up to the RCMP as he has done; all he has asked for so far is justice and honesty (something that may be ignored on the RCMP lapel in this matter)
THE NEW STORY is what about the CBSA tape of the 6.5 hours he spent in that room? No comment from them yet!
November 19, 2007 / 16:49
We simply can't lynch the cops for this tragedy and be done with it. If they are at fault, then whose responsibility is it that they apparently were not fully trained? There is a whole six hours unaccounted for by Mr. Pritchard's video. The part he did shoot is merely an edited version of the whole story. We need to learn much more about Mr. Dziekanski, what happened in those six hours, what witnesses saw and heard, and what Pritchard's video does not show.
Pam: Good point about Pritchard and his "money shot". No doubt exposing the RCMP comes in at a distant second to basking in the glow of his sudden fame. Correct me if I'm wrong - he sold the video to the CBC?
Tank: How do you know he didn't see the camera? And you forgot to mention he was in a state of nicotine withdrawl...
November 19, 2007 / 16:50
Frank - for once I agree with you - the press has sensationalized this story beyond hope. I did find one curious article in the Post on the weekend which quoted some of his friends in Poland as saying he had never wanted to come to Canada, or leave his common law wife. Some say his mother nagged him to the point he finally gave in.
Lew - The videographer is not a hero. This guy was filming long before the RCMP arrived. He should have put down the camera and offered assistance.
November 19, 2007 / 18:40
After all, why did Pritchard pick up his camera in the first place? He saw an agitated guy pacing around, and decided to videotape him in case he did something drastic. For that videographer, Dziekanski was the bad guy until the cops took a shot at him. Now Pritchard wants "justice and honesty" when he too is guilty of exploiting the guy?
November 19, 2007 / 20:34
Why was he held for 10 hours anyway?? I think I would be pretty agitated too.
November 20, 2007 / 09:37
Careful people were on dangerous ground here were most of as agree
November 20, 2007 / 10:23
Jim - try not to say that sentence out loud at YVR.
November 21, 2007 / 09:07
Lew you aren't looking for answers you want a pound of flesh
or a public hanging
November 21, 2007 / 10:15
Jim - absolutely not, I feel as sorry for the 4 officers that are part of this tragedy as much as the victim and his family. My posts have been aimed at other posts that ignore facts and a governing body that investigates itself. I am appalled at the inaction and deceit that this policy has led to.
The handling of this case brings haunting memories to a province that is afraid to say out loud that a young boy was executed in Houston BC. We have seen innocent people beaten and children pepper sprayed all within that last couple of years, without provocation and without justice to the guilty or policy changes to prevent future occurrences.
Human nature says that the RCMP will never be infallible, however they can never be allowed to be above the law and they should always be on the right side of justice.
November 21, 2007 / 10:43
Jim and Lew..
I wrote a response to both of your posts concerning my original post. Unfortunately for whatever reason I got the message that Fred has to review the message before it could be posted. It never ended up making it to the page so apparently there was a word or sentence in there the system didn't like.
I won't write as much as I did before because well it's a couple days later.
JIM thank you for showing me a link to wikipedia, although it does nothing to prove your point about having translators. If you think I didn't know the difference between international airports than you made an assumption about me that was incorrect. Also the use of wikipedia is about as useful as two left feet but that's a whole other issue. This is an international airport in Canada have you never been near the immigration office in the Toronto or Vancouver airport. They are full of people who don't speak english they have to have translators to deal with the influx of people coming to this country. I mean honestly get real we aren't dealing with a european country or the united states. Yes it doesn't say they have to have a translator but it's necessary for Canadian airports to function. Airports are also required to have translators on call for any type of situation, and as Lew pointed out there was a translator at the airport. 10 hours without a translator being used is garbage.
As for the we have two languages in Canada garbage, thanks for bringing that to my attention and thank you for also listing what those two languages are.(as if I didn't know that before) Go to any of the urban indian asian or whatever the type of community is and you can find 100's upon thousands of people that don't speak english more than Hi and good bye or french. After the world wars and all the immigration that took place coming here do you think any of those european immigrants spoke english when they got here, removing your head out of your @#$ and it might help.
LEW I understand that his mom lived 5 hours away. But 1 of 2 things happened or both. She gave him stupid directions when he came here in telling him to wait in the wrong area. Second I don't feel like she did enough to locate the guy at the airport. While at the airport she could have made an international call to find out back home if he had been on the flight. if she got turned away by one group of airport personnel she should have tried another to locate this man. I just find it tough to believe that they told her no he isn't here go home and that was the end of it. As for the fact that he didn't speak any english she could have given him a couple lines to write down to use at the airport as well may have helped him out. I don't fully blame the mother but I don't think that she made his entrance to this country any easier. I blame the airport most of all like I said before, all the other people involved in this should take part blame as well because with each passing day it becomes clearer people dropped the ball everywhere when dealing with this man and dealing with the situation afterwards.
