I agree with your post Fred, however, let's be honest, affordable housing is a fact of life, so can we be more progressive with the money that is being spent. Concentrating all of the housing into one development does not work; please see the slums of Canada and the US for proof. Let's face it, the mother and child will receive assistance, so let's focus on the child getting off the system when they become an adult. I know people don't want to see it, but it could help if the child does not accept their lifestyle as a positive, or the neighborhood gang as their only vocational option.

This issue has been around for a long time and it's only getting worse. The part that really irritates me is that you'll see many of these ‘mothers' with all of today's luxuries like an Ipod, digital cameras, cell phones, etc yet they still collect their govt handouts and claim being poor.. They also take in many of their useless relatives into their govt assisted homes.

Argie: I'm going to have to agree with you... I know scary. My favorite spot on how we aren't providing a enough welfare and affordable housing came about two years ago. City TV was doing a spot on it and went to this family where there were 4 kids. That was my first problem 4 effing kids. Next were their so called less than 'par' accomodations with a TV that was at least 35 inch leather couches that they were sitting on for an interview 1 dog 2 cats and a rabbit. This coupled with the nice digital home phone in the corner.
When I was younger and worked as a manager at a certain restaurant chain we sometimes were sent to work at other stores and the one everyone feared was 20/20 jane street. Well I got posted there for a week for the end of month/ beginning of new month when guess what all the welfare cheques come out. Guess how much greater sales were at that week.
I remember single mothers walking in with 2+ kids in tow with a big LCBO bag buying food all blowing their welfare cheque on fast food. I guess the only thing that told me they were hard done by was when they brought their no-name ketchup bottle with them and filled it up from the pump in the lobby with Heinz ketchup.

These ‘mothers' would be dropped off by a cab and then they would go pick out several movies while the cab waited with the meter running, of course.

I can guarantee that she did not plan to “have†him take off when they said “I doâ€. Especially when HE gets into drugs, drinking or someone else's bed and leave her with THEIR kids, the bills etc... When a couple split up 90% of the time the woman is immediately living at or below the poverty line as a result of her income being reduced and her now bearing the full load of the family responsible. Even in this day and age of equality, most educated women still do not make the same amount of money as their male counter-parts do for the same job. Yes these jerks should step up to the plate and look after their own but if they were responsible upstanding citizens they would not have placed their families in this position. We need to keep in mind that this housing crisis is also as a direct result of immigration and our open door policy where the government is allowing very skilled folks into the country yet not honoring their training, education, certificates etc… which forces them to work for minimum wage at menial jobs and in turn require government aid to make ends meet.

So this is a subject that I get very heated about. I am a single mother of two, getting support for my children from their father but just enough to cover the car payment so that I can go back and forth to work since we live up North. I own my own house, well sort of I have a mortgage with the bank. I do not take handouts from the government and everything that I earn is taxed to the gills. And then when it comes time for the babybonus to come I get only a fraction of what I would get if I was on welfare. I also get the $100 a month that they allow for daycare. There is an item we could discuss. So I work full time and have daycare to do so. I pay full daycare with no supplements from the government. I get $100 to help with this, and I will tell you that this is taxable income which for me hinders me even more come tax time because I already make over the $40000 a year mark. My question is why do the people on assistance get this as well...Let me tell you why....They get it so that they can get a break from life with being full time parents....whatever where the hell is my break. Well I would say that just takes a little bite into the daycare bill a month. I do it mostly on my own without support from anyone. I am proud to say this and have not had the financial help from the government in 12 years. I have never lived in housing either. I do not take it away from those who need it but I am sick of my children doing without while someone of these people have everything. My son is tired of being picked on because we are not well off and is being told he is poor. We are not poor but we are not as wealthy as some on welfare. My son's mom is on the system....She has a four bedroom house on a pretty big lot full use of a basement for housing, her son just got a xbox 360 for his birthday and is always getting games for this and I dont mean the cheap ones. She also works under the table and one point she had her daughter and son in law living with her without anyone in the government field knowing this. She always has money to spend. I live pay cheque to paycheque and make sure that i have the essentials. I also provide my kids with some of the up to date items.
I will tell you that I have sat down and figured out that I would make more to sit on welfare every month then to work full time. I could get housing and between assistance and my baby bonus I would get almost $600 more a month. I also have access for them to pay for everything for myself and children, full medical, full dental, and full eyeware....which right now I have to pay for our benefits through work. I also could go back to school which they would pay for...college at that. Plus the fact come income tax time I would get a bunch of money back because I would not have to pay taxes on anything.

I can tell you I don't have a hate-on for men at all, well wait, let me qualify that, I don't exactly have the warm and fuzzies for one in particular that deciding that drugs, alcohol and sex with random un-known women who worked the “night-shift†on their backs, were his new preference of the moment. We did not sit down and go over his new five year plan and decide together that leaving me with our child and that forcing me into bankruptcy among other things was a good idea. This was his choice and his alone I did not decide to “have him take offâ€, he did that on his own.
Stacy ~ I know you don't know me but I stand up and applaud you! You are an amazing person and I wish you well in your very difficult struggle. As I have stated mine left me to pick-up the pieces, which I did, not by choice and like you I did not use the system, which as we both know is so very tempting to do! We did without a lot, but in the end I could say I did it myself and did not leave/teach my child to be another user of the system!
There are a few bad apples that “work†the system but don't slap the blame on all single moms, cause you have two here right now in this blog-string that never did and never will!

The difference is the Arcade comes with no harddrive. you must either buy a hard drive or memory card for the Arcade. The Pro, however, comes with a good hard drive. I would strongly recommend the Pro. a little more money, a lot more worth it.
