Rag

October 3, 2007 @ 10:00

I keep looking at the front page of the Toronto Star this morning, but I can't believe what the motivation would be for plastering the front page with a picture of an eight year old who was accidentally shot by a Canadian soldier in Kandahar yesterday.

It's not on the front page of thestar.com, you have to go to the Canada section to see it there, but on the hard copy edition that I received at my door this morning, it was a picture that stretched the width of the paper and filled about one quarter of the length.

Why?

There's no doubt this is a worthy news story and deserves to be conveyed to the people of Canada, but for the Star to sensationalize it with a huge tear-jerking photograph on their front page is shameful.

It's shameful because although it displays the type of thing that can go wrong during war, it serves to do nothing but undermine Canadian troops who are doing a lot more good than bad in Afghanistan.

It's no secret what the Toronto Stars position is on Canada's participation in the war in Afghanistan is, and we all know they love to make the Stephen Harper and the Conservatives to look bad, but to use this huge picture on the front page is just another slap in the face to our troops.

The Toronto Star doesn't want Canada in Afghanistan and they'll do whatever they can to tie the baggage to the Harper government, and they'll obviously stoop to any means to get their point across.

Very true Fred! A rag indeed...

I can't believe how the media in Canada & the US look for any story that it thinks will alter the opinions of its readers. The end goal of this paper and many others is to influence the feelings of its readers so that they begin to look negatively at this just war.

There are some people in our society who believe that at no time is a war justified. They live in this fairy tale world where they believe there is no enemy and no terrorists. Ironically they are the same people who think Stephen Harper and George Bush are evil and are out for world domination and the oil that goes with it. I can't wait to hear there comments on this blog.

The welfare of that child no doubt runs a distant second to his usefulness as a tool of the star's propaganda machine. I'm not surprised at all. Predictably, there will be a lot of letters to the editor blaming the U.S. and damning Harper as the puppet of George Bush.

Fred, do youself a favour and cancel your subscription to the rag. Unless of course you need the paper to start your fire or line your garbage can.

Great! I was wondering when we'd all get around to trashing "The Star" again. You can imagine the "slant" if it had been American soldiers who had done this...

Fred, it's time to leave another phone message for the editor, what's his name again, "Wiener"???

Not sure as to why the Star handled it that way. This is the Globe's take, see if it's any different in it's text;

- And once you've finished reading about the innocent victim of Harper's Bush-like campaign, don't miss the ringing recommendation of Deltone McGimpy on the editorial page. Gee, the Toronto Star endorsing the Liberal party on the eve of an election... will wonders never cease?

Well Fred,

Most of the 'rags' plaster school shooters on the front page as well. For what? To catapult them to some sort of morbid celebrity status? No. To sell papers. This isn't anything new. How many weeks did they have photos of Jane Creba in the paper? Do you think that would be easy on the parents? No. It wouldn't... but it might sell a paper or two.

As for Argie Bargy's comment- so you'd be happy living in a country run by George W. Bush? You don't think he's a wee bit evil?

Harper did not chose to go into Afghanistan. It is quite the cynical stretch to think that posting the picture of an accidentally shot eight year old in the front page of the paper, is there to make Harper "look bad"

You've got to be kidding Jaun, Afghanistan has been thrown in Harpers lap by the Liberals and the Star is playing right along, even though he had nothing to do with the decision to go there. Thats what makes it so aggravating.

So Argie feels that he rather live in a country run by the "Decider Guy" and that he's not evil.

Want the money to fly out of Canada? I'll gladly give it to you.

Vaughan,

I didn't say I would rather live in the US. I said I could live there and that's he's not evil. Don't get your maple leaf knickers in a knot bud. Also I don't need or want your money.
