Is the full schedule posted when the kids are signed up for Hockey? This issue really has me torn. While I understand that signing up for a team is a commitment and we should teach our kids to follow through with said commitments, it is also about allowing a kid to be a kid. This story isn't as bad. The kids are old enough to miss Halloween. It comes down to the other days that these games are scheduled like Thanksgiving and Boxing Day. It blows me away that parents sacrifice holidays for the entire family to go to out of town tournaments on these days. But that is my opinion, perhaps these days don't mean much in that family and it is not a sacrifice. For my own kids I sign them up in leagues that are more recreational and the parents don't have NHL dreams..I mean the kids.

Man this stuff drives me CRAZY. NO you do not know the hockey schedule for the year when you sign children up. As I wrote in my own blog today (640Toronto.com) it is pathetic how hockey is taking over everyday *real* life. Halloween is a family event. It's one of the busiest traffic days of the year because *everyone* participates. We teach our kids to be excited about the day practically from birth - then cut it off at 13 because of "commitment"???? Give me a break. My son plays Single A in GTHL and they had good sense to cancel practice Halloween night - after parents and kids protested. It's time everyone realized kids can like Halloween and be daddy's *NHL Star* !!!!!!

Fred should you not judge a person on their own merit not whether they are a liberal or conservative winner or loser. I had no idea you ARE so narrow minded.Long time humble/fred lover but really lay off of the libs and look at things with a small amount of objectivity.@!#!$#%$#???

Right on Steph. Organized hockey for kids is out of control.Parents are pulling their kids out of class for games and spending fortunes on weekend tournaments and equipment. Parents get a grip, whats more important in the long run, a proper education and a stable family life that passes by all to quickly or the fact that ur kid learns to play hockey? I also think that hockey parents have no life of their own as they are too busy trying to meet all the game and practice schedules, not to mention all the bs that you have to put up with at the rink.

Some people just like to bitch. Let's face it if a kid can't miss Halloween at age 13 then maybe hockey isn't that important to him or her and they should really be playing house league.
I do agree with Andrew that it doesn't seem to be a problem for kids to travel to tournaments on Thanksgiving and Boxing day. I guess they aren't as important family days as Halloween!
I coached house league hockey in the Ottawa area for years and every year house league always started Thanksgiving weekend. No one was crazy about it but we sucked it up and dealt with it. If Halloween is more important then hockey to little Johnny then he should do the Halloween thing.
As for commitment, when I was 13 if you were still going out for halloween you were ridiculed by everyone at school for being a baby. Now I have kids with more facial hair then I can grow showing up at my door at 9:30-10:00!

Believe me, she would have been a much better choice then that witch Joyce Savoline.
Vince, Fred hates anything Liberal, does not matter how good, or how much better. That Savoline almost got beat in a riding that has been Tory blue since the 40's. That should tell you the kind of rep Savoline is. F ed up the Halton Region for years now, she's set her beady little eyes on the Province.
