My family and I have been living here since 1989, and we proudly tell people we are canadian.
My entire family learnt english, and five years after arriving here we became citizens. You should see the hoops and obstacles we had to jump through before we were granted the landed immigrant visa. We had to be tested on Canadian history and geography, as well as english tests and several medical exams. Somehow, I think Mr. Singh and his family might have skipped all those crucial steps, which I think are in place to help build a foundation of respect and appreciation for the nation that you are hoping will adopt you. What I find more disgusting and perplexing is the possibility that Mr. Singh was most likely born in Canada, like so many other ungrateful people who have never been to their parents' "home" land, yet will intensely desecrate Canada. We need some iron-fist-like measures like the ones taken in The Netherlands, for example, where if you are not fluent in the language, or wear a vail or a turbant (and refuse to take it off) you are not allowed residency...Period!

People like Mr. Singh are VERY quick to demand there “Rights†and speak their mind . Not so much to defend my rights or to listen if I speak mine. And not very quick to defend your Rights either Lew.

Very well said, Fred. Racist is a strong word, and used all too often for the wrong reasons (remember Dudley Laws)... I certainly take exception to the narrow minded comment Singh made about the canadian culture being nothing more than Hockey and the word Eh .. he totally forgot about ice fishing !! Seriously, if that is all he can see into our culture, then he is the one with the problem.

So my namesake doesn't appreciate Canadian culture despite the fact that he his Canadian. Does that make him racist?
No. It's still sad though.
As part of the New World, Canadian culture is quite new and from my perspective, sitting in the UK, it's less different from my culture than German culture.
But Canadian culture still exists and given how many Canadians seem to be such decent human beings, over time Canadian culture will only get stronger. Like all Canadians, the other Sukhpreet is lucky to be one!
I think Juan is way out of line when he suggests that those who wear veils and turbans should not be allowed residency. Should people who cannot spell veil and turban correctly be denied residency? Juan, relax and be more Canadian!
