The Devil Makes Cents

September 28, 2007 @ 08:46

It'll be fascinating to hear the liberal spin on yesterday's announcement by the Prime Minister that Canada has a 14 billion budget surplus.

I can't begin to imagine how he'll be attacked but I do know I totally agree with his plan to pay down the 467 billion dollar national debt.

Already there's been some squawking from the city of Toronto. David Miller would like some of that money, but why would the feds throw more dough at Miller when he's proved he can't handle the money he already gets?

Listen, I love tax cuts just as much as the next guy, but as the father of two twenty-somethings, I have an eye to the future and the country they'll have to deal with, and the national debt has been a pressing problem ignored by the Liberals for well over a decade.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Stephen Harper makes so much sense when it comes to the environment and the economy it must drive liberals crazy. His strategy to pay down the debt and then let that initiate tax cuts is exactly the way to go.

We owe it to our kids.

Fred: I agree the debt needs to be paid down but I think this should be balanced with tax breaks. Canadians are still an over taxed people especially when you consider GST and PST on everything freaking thing we buy. Hopefully Harper continues to reduce the GST charged and institutes income splitting. The latter will encourage some mothers or fathers to stay at home and raise their children. Too many parents are downloading the critical responsibility of raising their kids to an unqualified stranger. The cost to society will be much higher down the road if today's children are being neglected by their real parents. Just a thought.

Let's not forget that Harper inherited this surplus from years of sound fiscal management by Paul Martin.

I know everyone will hate to admit it (especially Fred) but as finance minister...Martin did do a good job.

Fred, I find this post opportunist at the least. Can you show one initiative Mr. Harper has introduced that may have contributed to this surplus? Politicians don't know how to make money; good politicians spend wisely and can help recover a sinking economy, Mr. Harper has not had to prove himself on either front.

Harper is looking real good right now, but what exactly has he done??

I agree with Pete, Harper inherited the surplus and is now trying to take credit for it.

Freddie... unfortunately Mr. Harper is very opportunistic. Haven't the Conservatives, and Mr. Harper, vigorously attacked the Liberals for the surpluses that they have generated in years past? And wasn't it Mr. Martin's prudent fiscal planning that has allowed the Country to begin paying down the huge debt created during the days of Michael Wilson's out-of-control spending? Fred we know how much you support the Conservatives, but a balanced perspective is always appreciated.

At least Fred used his proper name in the title.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
