It Happened In Brampton

September 25, 2007 @ 09:56

I've had a few e-mails from people wondering why I haven't commented on a controversy at Brampton's new Civic Hospital.

A nurse who can fluently speak both of Canada's official languages was denied a job because she doesn't speak Punjabi or Hindi.

The hospital is located in that area of Brampton where there is a large East Indian population, so somewhere along the line it was determined it might be a good idea to have several nurses who will be able to converse with a good percentage of patients who come through the door.

A few of you suggested I avoided this story because it's Brampton and I wanted to protect my dear home town.

Not so. I don't think I heard about the story until Friday and then I didn't post again until yesterday and to be honest, I forgot about it.

What do I think?

Well like most of you, in principle, I find it hard to accept. It's pounded into us from an early age that we should learn French because it can only help when we're looking for a job, especially a government job. Nobody ever said anything about Punjabi or Hindi.

The Brampton story is so typical of what Canada has become. It's not a question of immigrants coming to the country and learning our ways, it's another example of Canada bending to immigrants and doing it their way, it's how we get along.

There's no use getting bent out of shape because thanks to Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Canada adopted a multi-cultural policy way back in the 1960's. We encouraged people to come to Canada and share their culture with us and from the very beginning the onus was placed more on Canadians to accept than it was for immigrants to conform and this is just another example.

It's what Canada is in 2007 and it's not going to change so get used to it.... and maybe it shouldn't change because it's still the greatest country on earth.

And it should be pointed out, there is nothing illegal about what the hospital requested, it is simply viewed as a condition of employment and in the end may save a few lives.

Fred: Thanks for commenting on this issue. Just as you say, it's the way Canada is in 2007. I understand why the hospital would want a nurse who could speak one of the 2 dialects. But, the idea that a town in Canada has been over run by one particular ethnic group scares a lot of Canadians.

My advice to those concerned about Brampton: Don't move there. If you live there and it really bothers you, move to another town. Canada is not changing their immigration policy and the people that come here will be doing their best to preserve their culture and in some cases not learn one of the official languages.

I don't agree with it but that's the way it is. To use that tired phrase “it is what it is....”

All immigrants coming into Canada should have to take English lessons. If for no other reason there own safety Allot of these family's rely on there children to translate for them

Judging by your grasp of spelling, a few english lessons wouldn't hurt you either, Jimbo.

"WOHC spokesperson Dawn Dunn said officials are unaware of the incident, but stressed that other than one program with a specific focus on the region's South Asian population, the organization does not have a hiring policy that favours a specific ethnic group."

Looks like a tempest in a teacup, and a disgruntled 'non' employee.

ESL or even FSL (French as a second language) should be mandatory for anyone coming to Canada so that they can communicate on one of the official languages. It's a small effort those who wish to live in Canada should put forth.

If I went to teach English in Japan, I would make an effort to learn some Japanese & etc.

By the same token, a hospital is for saving lives and if the need exists for several nurses to be able to speak whatever language in order to communicate with who comes in the door then it's a legitmate employment condition - whether or not anyone likes or dislikes it or how things became the way they have.

The fact that this is a specialized profession (nursing) and in a specific setting (hospital) the emphasis should be on hiring the most qualified nurse, regardless of language skills. Hospitals provide translators when required.

A prerequisite for emigration to Canada should be competency in at least one of Canada's official languages. Immigrants should feel that it is their right to keep their heritage, but must also accept the responsibility of living in a new country.

As Canadian's we should accept whomever wishes to live here. We are obliged only to serveall Canadians in the language of Canada's choice - French or English!

As a nation, like it or not, we have embraced only two official languages. We do not need to discriminate beyond this.

If the nurse was qualified as a nurse, she should have been hired. There are more than enough people that could hva ebeen hired on to have in the hospital as translators for her, or anyone else. I coached a kid in soccer this year who's Mom hardly spoke a lick of English. The kid translated for her and we got along just fine. The kid was 10. We could even employ students or the elderly to do it. I live in Brampton. I will use that hospital. I'm quite happy that the hospital will exist, largely because of donations from the Sikh community. Much appreciated. I just wish we could all work together to find solutions (like translators, instead of working so hard to point out each other's differences. And here's another point, what about the people that will use that hospital that speak only Portugese, or Italian, or Russian? Will they only hire nurses that are fluent in those languages too? No. They will ask family members to stay and translate for them. I know this, because it has happened to my family. Nothing is perfect. Maybe this potential nurse was a nut-job and they just wanted an excuse not to employ her. I would have bought that more than the language thing.

So now our health care dollars will go to translators? In that case maybe it's just as well to go with the nurses than can do both jobs for one price. Sorry. I didn't make it this way but it's a cheaper solution if nothing else. I'm not the one who painted us into this corner, so don't be mad at me! lol!

Mike is right, hospitals and even Doctors offices (larger ones) employ or contract translators and yes Jason Get your OJ, that is covered by some health care insurance including sometimes, OHIP.

If she was qualified for the Nursing job, she should have been hired. A translator makes less and does a specialized job, like the qualified Nurse vs the less qualified but part time translator Nurse.

Hey Irvine? I think am starting to like you.

To others, if you want to be a Canadian citizen, you have to speak English. In fact, it takes real hard (WORK) studying to get your citizenship. You don't have to speak English or French to live here. If English or French was a prerequisite to get into Canada, this country would be a much lesser place.

As for Trudeau, bash a dead man if you want but, history will show the he made Canada the envy of the world. Why else would so many people want to live here. Don't give me any of your Toronto Sun style comments about freebie's and sponges and living off the hard working Canadian taxpayers because, THEY are the minority. I like Fred's opinion on this. It is the greatest country in the world. If only we could get rid of the whiners.

Mike,

I now know you've lost it since you're starting to like Irvine. Actually Irv is right. When are these immigrants supposed to find the time to take ESL classes? They're here doing a job that most Canadians refuse to do.

Having said that, the reason we're the envy of the world and why everyone wants to live here, as you say is because of the way we treat immigrants. Free healthcare, free education, subsidized housing are some of the reasons. If you don't mind being taxed to death to cover these expenses, then bully for you. I do so you can put me down as a whiner. There are several other countries I would rather live in.

Fred,
Thank you for your comments. I fully agree that this is what makes Canada great. I worked for Brampton Parks and Rec for 25 years and what amazed me was the number of immigrants (especially East Indians) who enrolled in programs like 'learn to skate' to feel more at home in their new country. and it was adults as well as children.
Just last week my mother passed away in Trillium Hospital in Mississauga. and I was pleased to note that at 11pm an Indian lady was the Volunteer who helped to comfort people waiting in the various waiting rooms. Many of these people want to 'belong' and it needs to be encouraged.

I'm apalled and embarassed at the attitudes so many of my fellow English-speaking Canadians take towards immigrants! Our diversity is what makes this such a fantastic country, and more power to the immigrants who are able to keep their culture and language alive in our great nation.

Put yourself in their shoes...leaving everything they know and are familiar with to come to Canada and work their a$$es off to try to make a better future for themselves and their children. Shame on you who judge them for being unable to pick up a language that is completely different from their own.

I lived in Alberta for four years, and I find it shameful that the only person who wholeheartedly supports and empathizes with our immigrants is from one of our whitest, most conservative and, unfortunately, racist provinces. Come on Toronto! Think of how much less interesting our city would be if we were all white native English-speakers! Think about the cultural events, the music, the dance, the food, the perspectives on life that immigrants contribute to our city and country.

What the hell is wrong with having multiple languages and cultures in one country, in one city? South Africa has 11 official languages. India has fifteen widely spoken langauges. And Papua New Guinea, with a national population of 4 million, has over 800 languages.

What's wrong with diversity and difference? Appreciate it, don't be euro-centric racists.

Think about your ancestors when they came over. I'm sure the majority of our European ancestors didn't speak English when they came and had difficulty learning English. I know my grandparents had a very difficult time, and my parents had a major adjustment learning the language as children as well.
