I can see why people are outraged. How can Mr. Allen possibly expect new immigrants to fit into a society that they have transplanted themselves too? Obviously it is the existing society's obligation to bend and change to suit the new immigrant. Anyone who says otherwise is obviously a Racist and a Fascist. Figuring out how it works when differing immigrants have differing needs and demands is not my problem.

Perfectly put. There isn't that much to comment on to further his argument he's right, not 90% right but 100%right. At least he was able to speak his mind and not have his career vanish in an instant like Don Imus did in the states.

I agree Fred 100%. No one should be fired for giving their opinion especially when they're paid to give an opinion. If he advocated harming a particular ethnic group(s), then yes he should be fired and dealt with by the police.

Excellent! As someone who has lived in Canada my whole life, I get a little annoyed when I see no respect for our country from people who have chosen to move here from other countries. If I moved to another country that didn't speak English, I would never expect that country to adapt to me. If I had to wear a head dressing, I would because that is that country's cuture.
We are a country that has rules, everyone is expected to follow them. We have 2 official languages, English and French. That's all I expcet to see on signs, etc. Other cultures are great, but please respect that Canada has a culture as well, it's not made up of everyone else's. You decided to move here, I hope it wasn't just for the 'perks' that Canada offers.

His message at the end came across a little harsh, but I'm sure that's what he intended to get us all talking about it. I don't mind adapting rules from time to time, I couldn't care less if cops wear turbans, but helmet laws and the like are there for a purpose. Hockey helmets too. I purposely went to the text box, without reading other points above. I did not want them to affect what I want to write. Mr. Allen is dead right. I love East Indian people. I love some of their food. I think their woman are pretty. I respect their religous views and repsect their ancestry.
BUT, this is Canada! And if our East Indian friends can come to this country and contribute and join us (the ones already here) and add to our flavour, then great. However, if they want to use this country for financial support and force their values on us, unilaterally, then kindly stay home. If the values are that "over-the-top" important to an individual than he should stay in that country.
Please, reverse the situation and think of a Canadian-born man or woman moving to India and insisting on an Anglican or Catholic school be built pronto,as it is infringing on their rights in the section of New Delhi their are currently living. You would be scoffed at by the native peoples of your city. They would ask you why you came!!
I love all people, but I particularly love our country and the idea is to "fit in" and some flair, NOT change it to the same place you came from.

Billy Boy has it right ! PLUS the sooner our Canadian culture can be saved the better ! Lets not forget that we let in a whole lot more cultures other than East Indians. They too have to respect what we have to offer as a country. What burns me is to see an RCMP officer that wears a turbin, that my friends is NOT RIGHT PERIOD ! Irvine - you're blowing smoke. Bruce Allen has been speaking his mind like this for years. He is a very successful man that is not reliant on ratings or a radio gig at all for that matter, and as for NW, I can't remember the last time they were below #1 in the ratings.
My only comment is that is always an East Indian slant...I live across from a Portuguese family that grandparents don't speak English, I was born to a Dutch immigrant that learned to speak the language as he went along and this can be said for most of the people that have immigrated to this country and help build it. Was there a lack of tolerance towards those Europeans like there is now, with our friends of a different colour?

I believe that the majority of Canadians would not be offended by or disagree with what Mr. Allen said.
I think the Australian politician (Prime Minister?) came across much more bluntly regarding their attitude towards immigrants fitting into their society/culture.

Actually Lew there was, those weren't the gentle politically correct times we live in today. My mother tells stories of being called a WOP and a DP...she recalled my gradmother being called a witch by the neighbourhood kids because my granfather had just died and as was customary in her culture, she dressed in black. But you know what, they sucked it up, learned the language and went onto lead successful and happy lives. No special dispensation, no ESL classes, no accomodation, just hard work and willingness to fit in.

The tone he used was unnecessary and I can see why it has been criticised as offensive. The talk of Muslim women being aloud to wear burkas at election day cuasing debate seems ridiculous to me... perhaps there could be accomodation for these women to be identified by other women in a private setting before moving on to the polling area. I like the diversity in our country... instead of thinking how people moving here "inconveniences" current residents... let's be accomodating and think of the many ways our diversity enriches our culture.

I'm a Canada loving Indian. I am not Sikh. I agree with what was said : if I chose to go to another country with my family or alone, I should obey their laws and take them as mine. I can't grunt & moan about what it is like in my old country. I shouldn't want to have the country & the other citizens change for me, I should try to adapt to them and surely they will be willing to help me out. It's true that the Sikhs & the Muslims have special needs but they can't expect a non-Sikh or a non-Muslim to deliver that to them on a silver platter. Adapt when u r an immigrant. I totally agree.

As a Coast Salish person, it gets tiring to experience the disgruntled who feel First Nations don't deserve justice and complain as we speak out against injustice. Bruce Allen is an extremist in his views against our people. We had the whole pie before colonization, and yet there are those who whine and complain as we defend the crumbs, which is all we have left, against government and their global interests.

I agree with everything Bruce Allen had to say. When you decide to move to Canada from another country you make the choice to leave your country and join US as Canadians. I don't want to see other country's flags flying in people's front yards. Don't ask for special treatment and you will fit right in. Pay tax and work hard and enjoy this great country. I think the reason society in general looks down apon the "abogiginal" or "native" community is because they get such huge tax breaks that the rest of canada feels they have to support them. Just my thoughts... Proudly Canadian, born & raised!

Everyone living in Canada should count their lucky stars.As a Canadian immigrant living in S.E.Asia,some things I put up with include a higher tax rate based on my nationality/race? Yes- Australian and Americans pay less...And yes, forget about a speedy (fair)trial if needed, decent medical coverage and the many social programs Canadians have come to expect as NORMAL..My point is: in spite of what I've been brought up to think is fair or correct, immigrants (such as me) must learn to adapt...As an immigrant one shouldn't expect your new country to change it's laws or culture to include you. I agree 100% with Bruce Allen's general theme. Bruce may not have used the most diplomatic way of putting it, but sometimes it's the only way to get the message across so that everybody understand clearly! I'm proud to be a French born and raised Canadian. Let us remain Canadian and be inclusive of all immigrants who want to truly become CANADIAN!!

I am not a racist. I believe in equal rights for everyone. Why do CANADIANS continually have to bend to suit IMMIGRANTS? If you want to come to this country you are more than welcome, if you want to practice your religion, you are more than welcome... if you try to IMPOSE your beliefs onto ME as a born CANADIAN, you are NOT welcome. In my opinion the bottom line is this, if the Olympic Committee were to allow for the Canadian National Anthem to be sung in Hindi that in itself would be a racist act! I say this because we as a country have never made that adjustment for any other culture so if we were to do it for one and only one specific culture that would be a discriminatory act! If we were to do it for one culture we must do it for all of them.
On a further note if I were to ever move to a foreign country I would never have the audacity to expect the Country to sing THEIR national anthem in my native tongue!! Come on people, multiculturalism is a beautiful thing and something that makes our Country so wonderful...BUT if you want this country to be a mirror image of the one you left behind perhaps this isn't the country for you.

A lot of people are basing the complaints out of fear for "losing their culture".
But the fact of the matter is, people are too scared to adapt. There's no one out there asking people to throw out their culture.
Much of the adaptation is not even relatively close to the form many of the minority groups complain about. They just want to be able to act the way they do in public like they do at home.
Much of that behavior and tradition is acceptable to Canadians. Canadian culture should be defined as 'patience and acceptance' based. Because everyday I learn something new about another culture by my interaction.
But somethings need to be changed in order to communicate and live effectively with multiple other types of cultures. This is Canadian culture: our ability to get along with one another in a generic way of life without losing sight of our own personal culture and traditions.
Maybe they should start teaching that at the immigration schools (or whatever they are called).

The news broadcasts even gave the Hindi version translation - which was not even close to our National Anthem. Ahh me.. there are no true 'Canadians' as this is Indigenous land and you are all just visitors here to this OUR LAND.
BC is unceded territory.. Crown lands are held illegally. It doesn't matter how much you yell, stomp, and scream that TODAY'S immigrants should adapt to YOUR Canada's ways.. because white people escaping to our lands, the pilgrims etc.. didn't adapt very well, but took over and systemically destroyed OUR land and imposed colonialist religions and authoritarian laws upon the original people..and now we are the have nots and are fighting our way back up.

Re: Bruce Allen's comments of those immigrants who can't adapt to the Canadian lifestyle. I agree with all he says except for the comment referring to "O Canada" that was written in English. This is false. The words were written by Basile Routhier (in French) and the music by Calixa Lavallée in 1880 and sung, in Québec, that year for the first time. The English version was written by Supreme Court justice Robert Stanley Weir in 1908.
"O Canada" was officially adopted as the National Anthem on July 1st 1980.

I'm a first generation immigrant from Hong Kong (many years ago) and proud to call myself a Canadian. I believe this is a great nation and agree with Mr. Allen's comment. The Canadian Heritage such as the National Anthem must remain intact. I'm noticing a severe lack of French speaking members of our country singing the anthem in English. Although my internal race clock rings occasionally, I politely roll over and press the "off" button out of respect for what most anarchists deem wholly apocalyptic: "globalization". The fact that they are singing the "Canadian" anthem in Hindi is significant and shows great strides in the unification of Canadians in general. Yes I get upset when I hear that my country is NOT what it was when I was a boy but it has become something much greater and will continue to lead the way in multiculturalism and democratic globalization of societies and ideals for the remainder of our time on this lovely planet.
And I do understand both sides to this issue. I have no negative feelings towards any of the opinions expressed because I too feel the same way... but the world is changing. It will never stop changing. The faster we achieve a Type 1 civilization, the better it is for our children's children's children.... etc.
