Lauren Caitlin Upton

August 30, 2007 @ 07:32

I've received a few e-mails about Lauren Caitlin Upton, the 17 year old girl from South Carolina who gained world wide attention last weekend when she answered a question at the Miss Teen USA contest.

A few of you want to know why I haven't commented on it, assuming I guess that I'd be ready to jump all over her.

I can't do it and I think it all comes back to fatherhood. I keep thinking what if that was my kid - how horrible I would feel for her.

No doubt when someone puts themselves in the position Lauren Upton did you have to be prepared for anything, but at the same time she is only 17 years old and obviously really didn't understand the question.

Or more likely, she was so nervous in front of a live audience and a huge television audience that she really didn't "hear" the question.

So she botched it from every angle imaginable and I'm sure she'll never live it down.

At the same time I'm sure this incident will push her to the front of the line as far as notoriety goes, but I still have trouble making fun of her.

Her looks are an asset but when you're that good looking the critics are waiting to pounce.

She's just a kid and she was caught up in a moment that turned terribly wrong. If she was 21 or 25 or 30 I might find it a lot more amusing.

But right now I just feel bad for the kid and I think of how painful it must be for her dad to see this happen to her.

If you haven't seen the video and want to - go somewhere else.

Or more likely, the US gov't doesn't spend enough on schools and quality education.

Hey Fred? Where you been? HH beat you to the punch and about 1000 other bloggers. You are defending not just a clueless young girl but also the whole system. One fifth of Americans are oblivious as to what's going on outside of the holler where they live. They don't call the South the stupid belt for nothing. As I said days ago when I first saw this, "Oh darlin....marry me."

Wake up and read Mike. Nobody beat Fred to anything he took a different approach than everybody else.Everybody else beat up on the chick, Fred saw the other side.Your comprehension skills are pretty American. And if anybody thinks the situation is an different in Canada they're in for an unpleasant surprise.

Never mind I found it
wow I feel bad for Her
But it goes to show that the americian education is no where near that of ours in Canada that is gade 3 Geography
I would love to see her on are you smarter then a 5th grader I think we all now the answer. if you are unsure of the answer then no you are not smarter then the 5th grader

Hey Gene? GFY!!!! My comprehension skills are just fine, compared to your sentence structure. (Never start a sentence with AND) No surprises with our system. My six year old niece knows where Scotland, Canada, USA and Australia is on a map. I don't feel for Lauren or her parents. The most powerful nation is not necessarily the smartest.

Gene our education system is by far better then that of the USA
I have a fourteen year old son and we moved to South Carolina for 2 years when he was 10 he knew more about the states then the people that lived there all there lives I still spend a lot of time down there and I can tell you this
Every one has a degree of one type or the other
But very few would compare to someone in Canada doing that same job

Why do you think that so many Canadians go down there to work?
It's not the weather or the people it's the fact they are willing to pay Canadians more,
Especially in the Medicinal field then they are willing to pay an American to do the same job because the Canadian is more qualified

Don't get me wrong I love the States in fact Chicago is one of my favorite Cities in the world to go to
I just wouldn't want my son in there public school system

Mike: You seem like a smart guy but really… come on. The American education system is obviously much better than ours. Over the years, Americans have accomplished much more than Canadians (too many instances to mention). Additionally, Americans have dominated Nobel Prize Awards - even when you take population size into account. In Canada we like to think we're all smarter than the dumb American hayseed when in fact they have attained so much more than Canadians, in general. Just look at the medical breakthroughs, aeronautics, etc….

It's called funding
Americans spend more money funding special interest programs that is why they have more success stories
They should have more
They have more people in one state then we have in all of Canada so if they can't out number us in accomplishments then there is a much bigger problem then just there education system

I came to the conclusion a long time ago that kids in general, be they American or Canadian are not being prepared nearly as well as they were in the past. I've had many opportunities to work with high school students looking for internships and college graduates looking for their first job, and I have been absolutely shocked at the poor comprehension skills, non-existent writing skills, and general overall attitude most of them display. It now seems to be only the exceptional ones that can actually write a coherent sentence. I personally believe kids today are being sheltered and coddled through the education system and rewarded for mediocrity. For all of you who love to bash the US, believe me, we have our own problems. When we've solved them, maybe we'll have something to brag about.

Max: Well stated and written to boot!

The writing skills of today's youth in general are atrocious. Mind you, it's not just the youth; there's evidence on this blog and the emails I see on a daily basis at work that many folks can't compose a basic sentence. And for the love of God, why don't people know the difference between the words YOUR and YOU'RE???

Okay Irvine, you told me…….

BTW, in your email to the entire company, was it to inform them that all of the washrooms are now clean?

Max
August 30, 2007 / 12:06

Irvine, I don't know where you work, but if you seriously believe poorly written, error-filled correspondence doesn't effect a company's professional reputation you're dreaming. People should give a shit about writing skills because it speaks volumes about one's professionalism, attention to detail and thoroughness.
Your posts (despite the content) are articulate because that's how you were taught. It's ingrained. This is a skill that seems to be lacking in today's youth, and I think we're worse off for it.

Irvine, you seem to be missing the point. Yeah, maybe you can shift between casual "netspeak" and grammatically correct writing fairly easily (although the only evidence I've seen of that is your use of "dood" - you're right on the cutting edge there). I'm telling you many kids today can't. They write like morons because that's all they know. That's a failing of our education system.

Sadly, Irvine has one thing right about Canada: our educational system is bastardized to the point where practically nothing works. Our leaders are chomping at the bit for ribbons to cut instead of working on already-existing operations. If Caitlin Upton saw it up close and personal, she'd retch.
