Here's The Deal

August 28, 2007 @ 08:02

I think it's only fair that I answer all the enquiries I've received about a posting I made, and then withdrew on Friday.

It dealt with a column by Dean Blundell is last weeks EyeWeekly.com.

Entitled "Radio People Are Weird" Dean uses his column to describe some of the more distasteful people he's met in the radio business since he came to Toronto about seven years ago.

Call me naive, but I figured if the column had been written and then published in a Toronto newspaper it had been cleared and it would be totally acceptable for me to have some fun with it.

In the column Dean describes people, but he doesn't name them, so I thought it would be fun on FreddieP.ca to play along and get my readers to actually guess who he was talking about.

Crazy me, I never dreamed that half the people Dean was talking about were people he works with at One Dundas West, including a couple I think quite highly of.

Needless to say a little bit of shit hit the fan over the Eye article in a corner office and I guess it didn't help that I had perpetuated the thing by asking my readers to play the "name game."

Hey, I'm not stupid, somebody in my position can't be pissing anyone off, so when I received an e-mail asking me to withdraw the posting, I did.

The person who asked me is a long time friend and colleague, dating back to the CFNY studios above the strip mall in Brampton, so as a favour to him I did what I thought was right.

And just so you don't have to play the name game in this case, I'll let you know that it was Edge Program Director Alan Cross.

I guess Alan didn't want anyone to suffer any further embarrassment and I can respect that.

I feel bad that what I first thought was an amusing and edgy article had become a bit of an issue between some people I know and respect..

On the flip side, the rapid response that FreddieP.ca got from someone of the stature of Alan Cross actually makes me feel pretty good.

And that's the truth.

And that's why the post on SOWNY was never removed NOR requested to be removed

I like Jason better than Dean.

J seems to be the guy you'd invite first to a party, while D is the guy you'd ask if J couldn't make it.

Dean's column, regardless of the reason for writing it, reassures me of my belief.

It was amusing and funny
Unfortunately laughing at the expensive of others is what society seems to enjoy the most
If you are looking for proof of this just turn on the TV
And watch the Daily Show or 22 Minutes
Some times we cross the line of good taste, But that line is so blurred that sometimes you have to except things that normally we would find offensive
I think you did the right thing in removing it because a friend asked you too
But don't feel bad for posting

Jason proves that you don't have to treat other people like dirt in order to be funny.

Dean's humour seems to come from the worst part of him and is often meanspirited. He badmouths co-workers on the air although he rarely has the nads to actually name the person he's talking aboutthem.

Good for you for showing some class and loyalty to your friends and former co-workers Fred. Too bad Dean won't learn any much needed life lessons from your example.

Well, if Alan Cross reads this (and I credit him for helping me get into more new music in my younger years), how come the number one song on The Edge right now according to the Thursday Thirty is a song I heard on other radio stations back in January of 2007? Other stations are on the second of third Fratellis single. Rheorical question of course.

As for the Dean thing, live and learn I suppose. Not a smooth move.

Freddie,

I guess censorship of your content is your choice. Is it after all your blog.

I am just disappointed that someone that I respect would yank the material in question. It makes it even worse that it was yanked in response to a request by someone that I also respect. The final straw was that the whole thing was based upon an article in a printed rag that was obviously approved for publication by what, 2 or 3 people? It's all out there and visible.

Then of course there is the comment censoring. That really sucked. Freddie, the original posting is still available on the Internet, I won't say how to get it for fear that this comment too will get censored, like it did yesterday. Everyone should understand that the Internet is neither anonymous, nor fleeting.

My $0.02, hope it gets past the censors.

Is there nothing Alan Cross will stoop to to get ratings?????
This whole thing stinks. I hate to say it Freddie, but I just don't buy your explanation...

Maybe Dean Blundell could comment here on his remarks. I've never been a fan of Blundell or his show but I thought the piece was funny and mostly on the mark.

Trish
August 28, 2007 / 11:18

Yea... and come to think of it, wasn't it Frank Magazine who claimed it was Alan Cross behind that infamous pissing stunt that got (Blundell?) bounced for a day a few years back? I thank Alan Cross for the years of modern music he gave me, but I draw the line at moronic stunts like that and this list. It really sucks.

As for Blundell, one day he's going to get his ass fired, and he just might find himself in the position of needing help from one of these "weird" - but powerful - people. Let's hope for his sake none of them holds a grudge.

Christy
August 28, 2007 / 11:45

Nothing that I've read or heard of/from Alan Cross suggests to me that he is the type of person to 'stoop at nothing to get ratings'.
I just don't think that's a fair statement to make.

Jon in Buffalo
August 28, 2007 / 12:22

I read Blundell's column.

Don't know who he's talking about, but I do know this:
HE is the reason I stopped listening to CFNY. He is a joke as a replacement for Humble and Fred. He's rude, crude and it seems probable that he is really like those people he lambastes in his (poorly written) column.

Pot, Meet kettle.

I respect the fact that you like him, Freddie, and I don't know him like you do, but as far as I can tell, he's an idiot.

How he's lasted that long at that poor shell of the once-great CFNY, I'll never know.

Wally Crouter
August 28, 2007 / 12:32

So, What makes Blundell think he's any better ?

Talk about a "holier than thou" attitude.

He's the most immature, rude, inarticulate, mysoginist, inconsiderate and
insignificant turd in the business and he's pointing fingers ?

Wow. Talk about stupid.

He doesn't even realize this ?

Someone should tell him that if it wasn't for the talent of his two
sidekicks ( that he takes for granted )and the actual radio station that he
is lucky to be a part of, he would be nothing.

A great big fat overweight nothing.

Just listen to his show. He has nothing to contribute outside of an endless
spew of negativity.

Nice way to wake up in the morning.

And he thinks he's better than everyone else in radio ?

He could leave tomorrow and no one would miss him.

You can't say the same about the people he's taking shots at.

That's how self absorbed and out of touch this guy really is.

I guess this piece of shtick was his attempt at being controversial and
"stern-like".

Wow.
He's just so "on the edge".
He must have read about someone doing something similar somewhere.

How genuine.
He's just a great big coward and it's nice to see him expose himself this
way.

Until Dean grows up, he should do everyone a favour and stick his head
right up his Arrogant Asshole.

What a dick.

There's nothing wrong with what you did.

The whole thing's a freakin' riot, and so is your mink story.

August 28, 2007 / 13:19

Jon in Buffalo - I completely agree - I also stopped listening to CFNY because of Blundell. And as to your comment "How he's lasted that long at that poor shell of the once-great CFNY, I'll never know", I think I can answer that in two words: Alan Cross...

August 28, 2007 / 14:12

Jon in Buffalo has nailed it.
Blundell, I'm disappointed in you, but I'm not surprised. The folks at the Edge have to learn to get along, and if they can't, at least respect one another, and if you can't do that, maybe it's time to get out.

Trish
August 28, 2007 / 14:26

Jon in Buffalo - count me in as another one of your fans. Blundell was also the catalyst for my switching over to Derringer. Blundell is thoroughly unlikeable, untalented and unintelligent. As long as he's the morning man, CFNY will be continue to be a bottom feeder.

Jason Meltzer Patterson
August 28, 2007 / 14:28

Christy,

Whether or not Alan Cross would stoop to such a level I am not sure, but everything The Edge does is about ratings. It's not CFNY in the 80's. It's Top 40 Alternative.

As for the Dean Blundell Show, it's all been said already. Even the Jason and Todd show would be better.

August 28, 2007 / 16:33

Forgotten in all of this "who's who" is the fact that a guy like Blundell is offered some ink albeit in a weekly throwaway and he comes up with what he did? It reads like something he texted from his cell phone on his way to pick up one of his spawn from daycare.

What's the point of Web 2.0 when these wired kids (and Dean's no kid...he looks like a middle aged leukemia victim)have nothing intellegent to say?

He did thing's like this in the OLD days also!!!

It's all about ratings people.

The Blundell piece was great!! and also served a purpose.

Let's face it - you all listen to the show...obviously!!!!

I wouldn't invite any of them to a party! Although Dean is apparantly very smart at what this has caused.

Pete McPhedran
August 28, 2007 / 17:21

I just read a message from Freddie responding to my comment. One thing that I did not read into the message was that these people being made fun of by Mr Blundell are in actual fact friends of our good man Freddie P. It just took a poke by another of Freddie's friends, Alan Cross to remind him of that fact.

As I said, I respect Freddie and Alan, as a matter of fact, Alan Cross is probably one of the most intelligent people that I have had the pleasure to meet and communicate with. Don't get me wrong, it's not like we're BFF or anything, I just have exchanged a few messages with him.

So if Freddie P wants to respect his friends by not playing the "name game", I see that as a respectful move now and not a censorship thing.

Thanks Freddie!

I got a message from Fred too, Pete. And I have also reconsidered my original post. I do in fact believe Fred's explanation, as I have replied to him. The topic of Blundell just makes me cranky.

I also pointed out to Fred that I did not have the option of removing what I originally wrote.

cfny fm 102.1 the spirit of modern new rock music radio.

I have not listened to the morning show since the arrival of Dean Blundell. I find it to be crude, and not funny.

I was a regular, long time listener. I even lasted through Steve Agony in the morning when the edge lost their way for a while.

The Edge is however still one of the only places on the radio where I can listen to more than a few tunes in a row.

I sure do miss the old days though.

snivelling little jerk-off he is.

August 28, 2007 / 22:00

I read Dean's comments with interest... I respect his right to his opinions, but why dump on your co-workers? I've not listened to the CFNY morning show in years, have pretty much tuned out the whole thing for the Marsden infuuence at The Rock.
If I wanted Bathroom humor, I could listen to Buffalo Radio{UGH!} Dean... Try being human.

I'd like pay tribute to the unsung hero of this thread, the very eloquent Wally Crouter. Nice work, Mr. Crouter. You summed it up brilliantly. I for one look forward to more of your literate rants. Bravo!

On a side note, I'm kind of wondering where Jason is too. And I know Alan Cross and Blundell must be reading. Come on out, boys - we know you're there.

Irvine, It doesn't bother me at all that you're not concerned with my opinion of you, I'm merely taking a moment to point out what others have probably noticed as well over the past few months, and that's that the more we read your posts, the easier it is to tell that you're a little weasel with a big chip on your shoulder
and a hard on for Fred for some reason.

You seem to always be working ittle digs at your host,no matter what the point of your post is.

" Let's be honest Fred, Craig ( SOWNY ) gets thousands of hits a day. You don't. So what gives? "

Maybe 10 years ago.
But of late, rarely does anything interesting ever land on that goofy yellow board anymore. For the most part,it's the same whining and speculating by the same tired out of touch radio weenies who think they know it all.

On the other hand, with the variety of daily entertaining content and the broader appeal of this site, the daily hits are probably 10 times that.

"Blundell will do a Freddie P in the future. Unemployed with no one interested."

Nice. Another shot.
Very tactfully put.
Straight out of the Dean Blundell courtesy manual.

I just point it out because it seems to be a pretty consistent theme in all of your material, and, since we are on the topic of respect...

Christy
August 29, 2007 / 09:02

I agree with you entirely, the Jason and Todd show would be much better...even just the Jason show to be honest.

"Be Nice" is an idiot if he thinks we all "obviously" listen to 102 in the a.m.

As for the guy that misses the old days, go listen to the spiritoftheedge.ca stream dude.. or better yet.. find a station you like.

Who really cares?

Honestly, every business is filled with tards as described in the article. If you don't like the unnamed tards, then you don't listen. It's too bad that Alan asked you to remove the links. I am not bright enough to figure out who Dean was referring to, but apparently Alan is and he is afraid for some of his people's egos. Oh well, too bad. Get over it.

Thanks freddie. Still lovin' you.

August 30, 2007 / 13:50

Sadly, this just confirms my earlier dealings with Alan Cross at the EDGE. He has morphed into another management "tow the party line, drink the kool aid, sing from the magement stooge songbook". Too bad. He should have bigger things to worry about than your blog - like, perhaps, why his radio station is as crap as the other two slightly up the dial.

Mike from Lowville
August 30, 2007 / 17:07

I respond in defense of Alan Cross. He is a intelligent man. He would not be where he is now other wise. People have their loyalties and will defend or respect to deflect negativities. I applaud you Fred. It's easy to throw shit balls from the sanctuary of your computer table people. Unless you know all the details, back off. Or should I say F off. As for the EDGE. Stopped listening long ago. The only Edge in my life now is the ones I help build. CFNY was kind of the unofficial radio station of Sheridan Collage(Brampton Campus) back in the day and I've since gone back to my roots. CIOI 101.5 Mohawk Collage radio.
