Beckham And Bonds

August 9, 2007 @ 11:10

Several people have e-mailed me to ask why I didn't comment on two sports issues.

David Beckham visiting Toronto and the hype that surrounded it, and Barry Bonds setting the all-time home run record.

That's one of the great things about writing a blog. You can pick and choose your subjects without having them mandated and these two subjects did not inspire me in the least.

The Beckham thing was so "Toronto" it made me sick. A soccer player on the downside of his career signs a ridiculous contract with a second rate soccer league but Toronto goes whacky when he comes to town and doesn't even play.

Toronto's thirst to be "world class" sometimes as exposes us for nothing but a backwoods community of hosers. The media attention was pathetic, but that was obviously fuelled by the people's desire to know.

Know where he was going, what he was doing, who he was with, where he ate, where he drank and where he crapped.

And here's the irony. Even anyone thinks David Beckham will play-out his five year deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy they're dreaming - and anyone thinks Toronto FC will survive for five years is also dreaming.

What happened in Toronto last week with Beckham was nothing short of stupid.

As for Barry Bonds - nobody with his disposition and attitude deserves to the accolades he'll receive for breaking the all-time home-run record.

Screw the steroids angle. Who gives a shit?

Clean or dirty Barry Bonds is a king sized asshole with no class and totally detached from reality.

Barry Bonds was blessed with the ability to hit a ball with a hunk of wood and it just so happens that our society holds this high regard and his willing to pay big dollars for it.

Unfortunately, because of this Bonds thinks he's something special. He really thinks he makes a significant contribution to the world and therefore has the right to treat most others like dirt.

Things haven't been going too well for major league baseball in recent history and having Barry Bonds as their new home run king with all the baggage that he carries is something the sport could have done without.

I agree, Beckham, Smeckham, Feckham. On Bonds, yeah, another American Hero. Great roll model, eh?

JIM
August 9, 2007 / 13:09

I agree about Beckham I don't agree about the FC
I think Bonds deserves all the credit he gets
roids or no roids
Drugs are apart of all sports including hockey

I think we all need to get off our soap boxes and come to realization that drugs are a part of sports and have been for a very long time and will continue to be for as long as there is millions of dollars given to these professional athletes
To them the money and status far out ways the health risk

If we stay away and don't pay to see them then the owners can't afford to pay them
But we wouldn't do that
Because that's just the way the world works
With out sport the world would end as we know it
At least that's what we are meant to believe

Mike: What does being American have to with anything? We have Ben Johnson among many other cheats. And yes both are cheaters and should be criticized.

JIM
August 9, 2007 / 14:13

Johnson was set up
What are you talking about?

Johnson was a victim of a naive government, had Ben been running for the USA he would have never been caught.
The Canadian team just wasn't smart enough to mask it like all the others did
Say what you want!!! What Ben did was still amazing

Not liking the media or the fans is no reason to ignore the accomplishments of Barry Bonds. He is the greatest player of this generation, and possibly any generation. As for steroids, sure, it would be nice to know that he did it clean. However, there ae two things to remember. Ther first is that the whole sport is contaminated. Unless you know for a fact that the pitchers he faced are not also juiced, it is a non-starter. Second, if he chooses to cash in his old age to hit home runs while he is (relatively) young, that is not our business. If we took all of the "high quality, moral" people out of the hall of fame, it would be empty. So, try to appreciate what BB has accomplished and let us not all be so skeptical. Not everybody is Cal Ripken. Not everybody wants to be.

Argie
August 9, 2007 / 14:24

Jim: That's funny! Ben Johnson was a admitted and convicted cheater. He was not setup. He willingly took steroids to run faster. Plain and simple. Prior to becoming a world class sprinter, he was just another skinny kid from Jamaica living in Scarborough. He took steroids and thank God he was caught.

August 9, 2007 / 14:31

Argie, BB is Americas game. Hands down. Invented there. Favorite pass time, yada, yada. A great role model(Bond) for the kids. Do drugs, excel, get famous. God bless America. Talk about narrow minded? (Irvine) Tiger says? Now thats narrow minded. All hail Tiger and his infinite wisdom. (Sorry HH)

Freddie,
I usually agree with you, but I'm afraid you've spent way too many weekends out of town this summer to make any educated comments about Toronto FC.
They're for real, and will be here for a long time....!!!

JIM
August 9, 2007 / 14:51

Argie tong in cheek
I am not new to the world
What I am saying is we are to honest of a country
Were you even alive when Johnson Won?
If you were old enough to remember, then you can't tell me that you didn't cheer
When he won I know I did
I don't think he should have punished for using drugs I think he should have been punished for lying about using drug

Ivar Hamilton
August 9, 2007 / 15:17

Toronto FC is here to stay. The fans love it and it's a great experience at a resonable price (for now). I attend many other sporting events on a regular basis and I have to say that it's a refreshing change to not to have to sit through a Pizza Box promotion or the Frank D'Angelo Steelback band and all the other over commercialized elements that can keep you at an event for over three and a half hours.

Btw, the expanded deck looks great!

LEW
August 9, 2007 / 15:39

If the media had guts they would treat BB the same way he treats them; ignore him. Too bad the fan didn't throw the ball back on the field.

As for Beck-ham, I don't think his "star" is needed to sell the game in NA, in fact it will detract from the game, they experimented with Pele and Cryuff and it didn't work. Hockey's demise with Canadian youth and continued immigration will do more to sell the game of soccer than any star will.

Finally, I am old enough to remember having a few beers and cheering Ben on in a pub; it was a proud moment. I also remember wishing how much I wanted him to be wearing a Jamaican flag instead when the truth came out; a very embarrassing moment.

Jim: Not caring that drugs fuel athletics is just plain wrong, any parent should boo you continually for implying it is too much of a hassle to change it…..shame on you.

JIM
August 9, 2007 / 16:31

I am not saying that it's too much of a hassle I am saying that until all governing bodies of all sport around the world come together and get serious about eliminating it
They will always be around

My personal belief is we will have a cure for the common cold before we eliminate drugs from sports
Stop offering contract extensions to older players for stupid amounts of money and you will start to make a dent but that is all you will accomplish

To try to fix it- is to admit that there is a problem and no one is willing to do that
In any one sport

James
August 9, 2007 / 18:40

The Beckham coverage was a little annoying, but the FC has been a great story this summer. It's nice to root for athletes who, for the most part don't make a disgusting amount of money. Also, tickets aren't too expensive, and BMO field has an incredible atmosphere. I was shocked how much more fun it was being in BMO than it is at the Dome or the ACC.

The FC will be here in 5 years for sure.

Argie
August 10, 2007 / 09:33

Athletes should never be looked at as role models. A parent should be a role model to their kid. Failing that, an uncle, aunt, teacher or a religious figure. Athletes can be praised and admired but considering the fact that a kid does not personally know that athlete how the hell can he be considered a role model?

Trish
August 10, 2007 / 09:53

My favourite angle of this entire Beckham swindle is the juxtaposition of his manly image against the reality of his high-pitched speaking voice. It certainly adds a measure of gravity to all the hype.

LEW
August 10, 2007 / 10:52

Irvine - Kids don't need role models??? The statement is: kids HAVE role models. All we can do is help them find good ones, and in doing so, hope to be one.

I think we need to define a role model from the perspective of a child and not that of an adult. Sports should be looked at differently than parents and other professions because they have governing bodies and to achieve success in a sport there is community involvement, this makes the athlete accountable.

LEW
August 10, 2007 / 16:40

Irvine - I don't think you get it; we don't have a choice in the matter, children have role models and this is unstoppable. A child plays hockey and you don't want them to look to the best players and idolize them? How can you stop that and why would you, this is how we improve ourselves, seeing someone who is good at something; then doing our best to better it. The fact that kids have bad role models is unavoidable in this day and age, but when we do have some modem of control, such as sports, we should exercise our power to keep them on the straight and narrow.
A mentor is someone close to home, with personal contact, so expecting those individuals to also take the place of a role model for whatever passion the child has is a bit too much to ask of anyone. I would hope the mentors of the world help guide the child towards positive role models.

Max
August 10, 2007 / 18:05

I can't believe it, but I actually agree with Irvine on this. Growing up, I can't think of a single "role model" that I looked to and based my behaviour and values on - except my parents. Sure there were rock bands, athletes and other celebrities who I thought were cool, but even as a kid, it was unthinkable to me to base my personal behaviour or values on how they conducted themselves.

LEW
August 10, 2007 / 18:18

Irvine: huh? I've never taken my children to church and never will (but would never stop them if they felt the need) so please don't assume what my choices in life are.
I found my way through my role models; Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Brooks Robinson….and onward. I really don't understand how you can go through life without trying to emulate the people that inspire you?
Since we're guessing, can I guess something about you? You home school your children or are single.

Lew, don't bother with our transplant to the west. He's perfect, don't you know. He and his family have moved ahead of the rest of us on the evolutionary scale.

LEW
August 11, 2007 / 11:22

Thanks for the heads up Mike
I'm a transplant as well, I'm out in the sweet smoke and salt air of BC; so I'll be on the look-out for a family with no eyebrows or thumbs.

Argie
August 13, 2007 / 14:41

Lew: Bob Marley a role model? Sit around all day smoking pot and fathering countless children with various women. He's more of a clown. He may have had a fun eventful life but he paid for it ultimately.

LEW
August 13, 2007 / 16:16

Argie: I didn't say he had to be yours or for anyone else; he just happened to be one of mine.
I think "the clown" was taken very seriously, especially when it came to human rights, too bad you never caught the vibe.
PS. the cancer was from a soccer injury he never had attended to, not the smoke....but that is insignificant, just for the record.

Replica Handbags From China
September 18, 2010 / 17:27

Replica Handbags From China have more of a necessity than a fashion accessory has become. From now on, women were changing fashion trends in clothing. This is also for fashion and trends in handbags. The changing styles of bags, the style bags, handbags large hobo bag, bag, purse, canvas, just to name a few, are just one example of how each style is unique in its own way and are very popular among women worldwide have been. Women are more fashion-conscious every day because of the spread of the means and the pressure on Celebrity Fashion lot of hype about the designer bags that sport. Everyone dies alone to have a bag designer, but what people tend to forget that not exceed the limits of affordability of certain luxury in life can be discarded.

what is your opinion for Wayne Rooney
Will he really leave Old Trafford?
because there is now speculation that the 24 year-old could be on the move. It really wouldn't surprise me if he did move on after all that's gone on. However it would need to be abroad if he was to avoid the British media.
