My wife phoned me last night to tell me that Maie Pauts had left me a phone message.
Sweet Maie said she was just calling to catch up because we hadn't talked for a while and if I wanted to call her back, call later in the day this week because she'd be filling in for Marilyn Dennis on the CHUM-FM morning show.
So of course I got up this morning in the trailer and pointed my Starchoice Satellite towards Toronto so I could hear "my darlin" do her thing - and it was a pleasure.
Everybody loves Maie Pauts and its not tough to realize why. That sweet ingratiating voice you hear on the air is what you get when you're with this woman face to face in any situation.
Maie is one of those old "CFNY" family members. Before the days of convergence and corporate squeeze in radio we had a pretty special thing going on at CFNY - we were a small group who really cared about each other.
A lot of us got married or had kids during those years and together we lived through the struggles that CFNY experienced as it grew to be what it is today - and Maie Pauts was one of those people.
"You don't know what you've got till it's gone" is one of those old sayings that's got a lot of play in my head since I was tossed from the business. When you miss something you tend to really miss the small things, the subtle things and one of the things I miss is the daily cross-over at 9:30.
The Humble and Fred Show would end, and the Maie Pauts would begin but Maie would always come into the studio a few minutes early and it was fun to catch up and goof around and trade "kid" stories.
I've worked with a lot of people throughout the years buy Maie Pauts is near the top of my "special" list.
Maie Pauts is good people.

You are bang on Freddie

Fred,
Other than this fill-in for Marilyn, does Maie have a regular gig...out of the city even?
Always loved the "Nooner" with Maie and her trivia.
Its kind of like a couple of weeks, when you could have built a Stanley Cup contender with all the free agents. You could build a hell of a hip, thirtysomething, fortysomething radio station with the talent that is available!!!

Maie is, indeed, good people!
Met her about 10 years ago at the CFNY Street level studio on Yonge Street.
There was no one else there but my wife and I and not only did Maie say "hi", but she spent about 10 minutes chatting with us during her break.
She is in person exactly how she seems on-air.
Miss hearing her.

I've had the pleasure of "meeting" Maie twice. The first was when i was doing an all night study session during university when Maie was on the overnights at CFNY. It was about 3am and I called her up to request a Smiths tune, and even at that ungodly hour she was pleasant and accommodating. About 10 minutes later, on came Bigmouth Strikes Again as per my request. Probably didnt hurt that Maie herself was a fan of The Smiths!
Second was about two years ago. I met her at a taping of local tv show Reel to Real, and she was as pleasant and friendly as i recall her on air. And, the best part of our chat was that she's still as cool as ever. I asked her if she still have a passion for alternative music, especially since she had to endure CHUMFM's playlist, but she quickly noted that she had recently taken her daugher to see Nine Inch Nails, proving that "The Spirit" was still with Maie!
Cheers,
Ryan

Maie has always been a favorite of mine. I remember the time a co-worker and I dropped in on her while she was doing the nooner.(early nineties) We were out on a test drive with a pre-production Windstar that was worth $400,000.00. Yeah, she didn't believe us either.

I met Maie a few times during her tenoir at CFNY, once at York U. A few people said to her that she had the absolute coolest job in the city, hands down.
"Yes I do" she said..

110% class.
And through thick and thin she's maintained it, and that alone is worthy of all the respect she gets.
But on top of that, she's just a really nice, decent person.
Ig.

Oh sweet Maie! One of the best and a complete pleasure to work with. Little known fact: she's one of the few people who can blow through a 30 second script and nail it first time, everytime. Our loss was truly ChumCTVBellGlobeGoogleAppleGlaxoSmithKlienPfizerMedia's gain.
Miss ya Maie!

I miss the 9:30 crossover with Maie too! I used to listen to it at work on my little Soundesign clock radio every morning. It's true - Maie is a class act, very upbeat on the air and a joy to listen to. Wherever you are now, Maie, you are too good for them.

I used to love the days of CFNY! H&F in the morning and then Maie for the nooner. I listen to CHUM the most when I listen to regular radio and I'd rather listen to Maie and Darren (i think-the dude who's filling in this week) in the morning than RR&M! They aren't corny! CHUM needs to find a better slot for Maie!

I miss the old CFNY.

I Miss maie too . Radio is just not the same without her. My wife wakes up to Chum in the mornings mow that H&F are off the air and it has been a real treat for me to Maie on the radio over the summer. I think she does weekend mornigs on a regular basis.

I agree with Megan. Humble and Fred, followed by the nooner with Maie was awesome radio.
With H&F, now doing other things, and other than Derringer in the morning now, there's just nobody to listen to.

Maie had such a warm and friendly voice. She had an incredible combination of coolness and down to earth-ness. One minute she'd be spinning the latest Smith record and the next minute she'd be reminding us to take the meat out of the freezer to it would thaw by dinner time...
