I was pokin' around yesterday and I saw the latest results of the BBM - I think they call this one 2007-2 or something like that.

Over the years I've been amazed at how CHUM-FM can fluctuate so much. In this book they went up two share points - other years we've seen them drop two share points.

For the record, based on share, CHUM-FM is the most popular radio station in Toronto, even though; probably like me, you don't know anyone who listens to it.

It's hard to believe that so many people can like and then dislike the station in such short periods of time. It's a farce really.

I don't have the time or energy to get into it, but for those of you who don't know what BBM stands for, it means Bureau of Broadcast Measurement. It's an archaic and inaccurate way of measuring radio audience in Canada.

A household gets a ballot or diary for every member of the family and during a given week they have to write down what radio station they listened to in quarter hour segments. (I'm not kidding)

Apparently, in the coming months BBM will be introducing something called people meters where a select few will agree to wear meters that will record all radio stations that they come into contact with during a day.

It too will have some flaws, but it will definitely be better than the current system, and will probably provide some surprises. There a few stations in Toronto that probably don't have the audience they get credit for, they get numbers based on heritage and the fact that "mom" probably fills out ballots for dad and the kids.

I have a wide range of friends - both in age and income and they honestly can't believe it when I tell them CHUM-FM and CHFI lead the pack in Toronto radio ratings.

It always comes back to the same thing. Most of the people I know between the ages of 35 of 50 desperately want a radio station but there isn't one out there for them and the general consensus is usually this - they'd love "a CFNY for their age group".

However, I've been hearing this for years and nobody seems to want to do it so I guess the bean counters and programming wizards have decided it's not viable.

A mature CFNY would get in the way of Rob Thomas, Maroon Five, James Blunt, Gwen Sefani and profound talk about what was on TV last night. And oh yea, it might put a consultant out of work.

Too bad.

Fred - I've been trying to figure out how the Mix morning show has done since you and Humble have been gone. Can you decipher these numbers ? Are they up or down since you guys were there ?

Sirius Sattelite Radio has something for everybody. The more i listen to it the better it gets. No commercials ,no censorship, the widest variety of music to choose from and only the odd annoying announcer.

CHUM-FM, CHFI, 680 News...all good brands but NOBODY I talk to listens to them to the extent the BBM people report them. 680 for traffic but not for a Rudy Blair report on Avril Lavigne's herpes.

This system seems to be in the complete control of radio experts who happen to be women. What guy is going to pull out his diary and write his choices down if those choices don't include a hot scene between Christy Canyon and Peter North?

A toast to the "radio at work" stations chosen by fat secretaries! You will rule until men grow balls. Or learn how to write. Pathetic.

I would love a CFNY for my age group. Alan Cross mentioned it at a book signing he did at the now Defunct Niagara Falls Media Play about 8 years ago. Basically a Classic Alternative Station that would offer the old school stuff...The Cure, Depeche mode, Smiths all the old CFNY favorites and then some.
A station that can make up for the stuff that is not being played as much now. I mean how many stations play The Ramones or the Clash that often?

David Marsden is on the radio every Thursday and Friday nights from 7-midnight on 94.9 The Rock out in Oshawa. Closest thing to the good old days of CFNY.

Will we ever see or hear the day when an "Oldies" station says "Turnin' back the clock to 1985 with The Cure"

I was at the book signing that Buffalo Mike mentions.. I had asked Alan about writing a book about the different characters that he had worked with [You Too, Freddie!] Would make for Great Reading! Sadly, the fix of Marsden is just too short. Somebody bring back our Spirit Of Radio!!

I also think that there is a place in the market for just more talk. When I listened to you and Humble it was for you guys and the music was secondary. Every now and then throw a song in so you guys can get a fresh coffee or go to the little boys room but it's the chit chat, the banter, the current events and yes even a little gossip!!! Its the personalities - not just a talking head that I want to listen to! And not the talk radio stuff that just gets me steamed! Some fun and funny dialoge! That is what we are missing in the TO FM market!

The BLEAKEST radio in Canada has to be London.Ontario.
Am or Fm it's always the same damn thing...
Last Nite on American Idol...
drool nanu nanu ad nauseum.
and Jessica Simpson bought a puppy, and LiLo is back in rehab and buy some furniture and now it's Sleep Country...

I agree there really is no where to get good music on free radio. That's why I rely on my CDs and lots of talk radio (am640 and The Fan once in a while).

Dont get me wrong between Edge 102 and Q107 i get my music fix but I think there is room and a desire for the format Alan mentioned.
I listen to Edge on Sunday nights for the retro and its awesome. I usually go for a cruise in the car just to tune it in or sit at the computer and reminisce for a few hours before bed....Martin kicks it up a notch on Sundays...

Here's a sample set I'd spin if I launched a station:

Pilate - Melt Into The Walls
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees
Clash - Hitsville UK
Bloc Party - So Here We Are
James - Getting Away With It
Editors - All Sparks
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Kiss Them For Me
New Order - Ceremony
Pixies - Here Comes Your Man
Stone Roses - She Bangs The Drum
Smiths - What Difference Does it Make?

(i could go on ..and on..)

Let's see some of YOUR dream sets!

Sweet Pam
July 18, 2007 / 17:57

Echo and the Bunnymen - Killing Moon

Jonie Lowie - In the Kitchin at Parties -
Camper Van Beethoven - Take the Skinheads Bowing
The The - Oh What a Perfect Day
The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary

Retro is all well and good, but you still need to hear the new stuff too. I switch between Q (in the morning coz Blunder, Danger Poof & ReTodd are just bloody awful) and Edge (any other time) but Q is just mired in old crap it drags you down, whereas the Edge has such a short playlist it's ridiculous, there's plenty more alternative and new rock out there.
I like the old stuff, but I don't want to hear it all the time, I still like hearing new stuff.
At work I listen to Virgin Xtreme online just to get a different, British slant, on Alternative. It's kinda refreshing.
Anyway, don't care what music a station played if you and Humble were back on the air. I never listened to you guys for the music, heck I listened to you on the Mix and the music sucked big time!
Rock on!

Ryan
July 20, 2007 / 10:31

Agree with you MacKnife, that's why in my set of tunes I includes some newer music too. My station would include some of the best new music from today and yesterday - respecting the pioneers of alternative music, and embracing the new ones..

cheers

I read the content on blogs in advance of when I leave a comment. If I have nada to say of the post topic, I might not leave any wisecracks. And I want to read anyone else’s feed-back on that post likewise. Because I can also find helpful . ideas with the fine comments. I would have posted “Outstanding blog! Decent posts!” then I will probably be spamming your blog. I as well possess a blog site, the first thing I'd do every day after i signed on to my web page is read reviews to my content articles and personally approve or reject these reviews. Keywordluv as well as brings you more commenters. It raises your position in search engines seeing that you’re not merely on many “dofollow blog lists” but also on a number of those “keywordluv lists”. Thanks, Angela
