Another Hurdle

July 13, 2007 @ 09:59

It's been four weeks since our beloved dog Billie had to be put down and the emotions attached to this are a lot like losing your job - you ride the roller coaster of emotions, some days are fine, other days not so fine.

Of course there's one significant difference. There will always be another job, but there will never be another Bill.

One of the things about losing Bill that's made things easier is her obedience. This dog was never a problem, very low maintenance.

For most of the day she just laid there and waited for you to move so she could follow you into the next room and lay down there. In a way, this has made it easier to adjust to her being gone because you hardly knew she was around to begin with.

There is however one thing that gives me a heavy heart every time I walk into our laundry room. That's where we kept her food dish and it still sits there full of "Iams Active Maturity" and there's still a full bowl of water.

I fed Billie for the last time on Tuesday, June 12.

She didn't eat her food that day and I knew something was weird on Wednesday when she didn't touch it again. It was on Wednesday night that she collapsed for the first time.

Thursday she went to the vet and she never came home.

So now we're faced with another one of those emotional situations. We have to empty the food dish and probably put it away for good - but I can't bring myself to do it and neither can my wife or kids obviously because nobody has touched it - nobody has even mentioned it.

I guess it goes back to that timing thing. When you lose someone close to you, even a dog, they say only time can heal and I'm sure this applies to Billie's food dish.

When the dish goes it will really hit home that Billy's gone and right now, none of us are ready for that.

I lost my cat that i have had my whole life back in September, He was 18 yrs old when he passed in my arms. The hardest thing for me to do was to put away his food and water bowls and to clean out his kitty litter box aswell. The Food bowl and water bowl sat there for a month or so. You need to take the time that you need, and if it takes a month then so be it. Loosing a pet is like loosing one of your kids. My Cat was my child as i have no human children of my own, so my pets are my kids.
Take your time, and when you are ready you are ready.
Take Care!!!

Our cat was 17 going on 18. A month is an appropriate time, I think. Even when the bowl is gone, you'll still be seeing her out of the corner of your eye, Fred, and feel her following you, as Billie did.

Grief is it's own master Freddie. You'll know when it's the right time to take away the bowls.

Hey Fred ... I had to have my CAt put down in early March ... I have never loved any being like I loved that cat .... My heart was ripped out ... it hadn't even been a year since his sister had to be put down ... anyway ...I know this may sound insane ... but I know it is true ... about 2 and a half months after he had to leave me I adopted his reincarnation ... this new kitten is exactly like him ... I know it is him... he just went and got a new body ... I am so sure of it that when I spread his ashes after I had already gotten the new kitten ... I didn't shed a tear ... cause he came back ... So maybe your Billie will find her way back to you too .... love never dies ... it just transforms ....

Hi fred. I cried with you again. We buried Kelly's old cat that she saved from the big needle 16 years ago. We also buried her 15 year old Jack Russell Terrier on Easter Sunday. Two year ago on Thanksgiving weekend we buried Lori and Kelly's beloved Tailwind. Their beautiful quarterhorse. Time heals but the best way to ease the pain is to get another pet. We still have his halter hanging in the barn over his name plaque. We will never forget him but the memories will always remain.
