Teach Your Children Young

May 29, 2007 @ 10:13

The family of 15 year old murder victim Jordan Manners plan to hold a news conference tomorrow where they'll call on the province to take action "now" on the conditions which result in senseless violence.

And on June 10th, Jordan's uncle Greg Stolks plans a march against guns. He'll demand all levels of government ban hand guns in Canada immediately.

Both are noble initiatives but definitely not where effort should be spent at this time.

I hate to sound like a broken record and to keep repeating myself but there's nothing going on in the Jane-Finch area that couldn't be fixed with a long term attitude change towards family values.

To be honest, I'd love to hold a march against screwin' bareback without any plans for the off-spring you could be producing.

Connecting the dots in these situations is not difficult. The vast majority of the perpetrators come from homes without a father and many of the kids in the same house don't have the same father.

Call me old fashioned or call me naive, but to my mind that is job one in fixing what is becoming a big problem in our city.

Bad ass kids will find guns no matter what government does. There are rotten people out there who will put guns in the hands of people who want them. It's called supply and demand and it works with every commodity on earth.

We need to curb the demand and the best way to do that is to take responsibility for the kids you bring into the world and turn them into people who won't want a gun.

And if this sounds like an attack against only men, it's not meant to be. Women have a responsibility to be a little more selective when it comes to whose seed they take.

At the very least use a goddamn condom, so your irresponsibility doesn't become everybody else's problem.

And further to that - isn't it interesting that one of the 17 year old accused in the Manners case just become a father, and the other, when arrested, was found with cocaine on his body.

Old enough to father a child and snort cocaine, but too young to have their names released thanks to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

And to Freddie's very well put comments I would like to add my 2 cents (again):

Besides providing proper parenting (father and mother) also make sure to know who your kids choose as friends or hang around with on a regular basis.

Why is it always that the person who got murdered was such a gifted, nice and good person, yet their friends have guns and drugs??????

Where was this kid's mother when it comes to find out and be interested in who their son is hanging around with??????????

Oh, I guess she had no time, she sure has enough time now to blaim everybody and their uncle instead of looking at herself.

I am so friggin sick of this sh..

Freddie you ae not being politicially correct !!!!!!!!!
and that is nice to see
as I was reading your blog I thought I had wrote it
you took the words right out of my mouth and good for you

Freddie, I totally agree. Unfortunately we won't be seeing much of an improvement in our lifetime. We can blame recent immigrants for the problem but the thing is many of these punks were born here in Canada. Who knows how many more generations before this culture fixes itself. I'm guessing never considering the inner city crime in US cities. Most of those thugs are at least 10 generational Americans.

A little off topic here, but yesterday's Star editorialized the decline of Toronto. Not once did they point a finger at Miller (you remember, the guy who wants to fight guns with basketball courts).....

Argie
May 29, 2007 / 13:45

Sweet Pam: That editorial was quite a chuckle. I love their solutions to the many problems of the city: Better recycling, more rec centres, more taxes to local residents and of course more money from the federal & provincial govts. Miller must have written this himself.

This is not a complicated issue. Throw the book (25 years) for anyone (including youths) committing a crime with a gun.

If they were to implement such a law I would actually agree to pay a "jail tax" each year to build a big enough jail to house the generation of thugs that will go away until the problem is fixed.

Freddie, you are correct again. Too bad common sense never prevails.

Until "we" stop blaming someone else for our problems, the problem will never be fixed. I am sick and tired of hearing that the government needs to fix the problem and that the government needs to hand out money to the underserviced groups to so that the poor misguided youts of today can have something productive to do. This is not about race or the government. It is about accepting responsibility for what you need to and getting off your fat assess and involving yourself in your community and your kids life. If more parents were responsible for investing in their child's future then perhaps the Youth Criminal Justice Act would not be the shield that it has become!

How interesting for the Star to say that we should bear the costs of making the city better. I wonder how many of their editorial board pay $5.50 to stand on a slow-moving, packed streetcar twice a day. Not many, I'll bet.

I can't imagine what would have happened if we had won the Olympics bid a few years ago. What a disaster that would have been...

May 29, 2007 / 17:07

Everybody in this case is calling for inquests and investigations into police conduct, school conduct, Toronto conduct.

To read that $5,500 and a camcorder and a '97 Cadillac were seized at that whinging woman's house and she's pissed off...quite a little Caribbean community we've allowed to establish itself, entrench itself and dismiss itself from the rest of Toronto.

Compared to the serious split in racial relations in the U.S., this one should be solved in a snap. But we won't let that happen because we consider ourselves better than answers in other jurisdictions. So we'll just drop deeper into the abyss.

It's time to abolish the Youth Criminal Justice Act. It's a joke....and everyone under 18 knows it and knows how to manipulate it.

From what I understand this boy was a straight A student and he was a good kid. It seems like the mother was doing a pretty good job to me. Not all single mothers are bad mothers as it seems some people are trying to imply.

May 30, 2007 / 11:43

Homie, you know one day we will all stop talking about this type of thing. One day it wont shock the nation that a 15 year old has been shot in a school. One day it will be just a 30 second news story on the news, and it will be all too normal.

Argie
May 30, 2007 / 11:52

Murph: In some ways it already has. When I heard on the radio last week of this murder, I wasn't that shocked. After all it was at a high school (loaded with punks) and it was at the Jane & Finch area (gunplay! what a surprise there!). I also wasn't a surprise to learn that no father was in sight and that two 17 year old punks have been arrested.

Jordan was not shot because he didn't have a father in his home. The last time I checked, I don't believe Jordan did anything wrong in this situation.

My mother always said that kids are a product of their environment. I have seen it in my own family. The parents need to clean up their acts if they expect their kids to be responsible adults.

Apparently Jordan's mother's act was clean considering that Jordan was a straight A student, he was not into drugs, and from what everyone has said, he seemed to be a good kid. Seems like the mother was very responsible to me.

Murph
June 1, 2007 / 09:58

I dont think that anyone is throwing stones at Jordan's mom.

The parenting problem in this case clearly lies with the families of the two thugs who shot him.

The saddest part of all is one of the 17 year old accused is a new father himself. I guess the tradition continues.

Hey Freddie- We all agree that fatherless children are more likely to be lured into the Gangsta culture- but when you refer to "our city" and then head up the Gardner to the 410 to your gated communtiy in Bramptom- I start to lose a little respect for your comments.

You, me and many other caucasians are also part of this problem. Everytime you buy a little weed for the weekend, or a bit of blow for the "boys" poker night we are contributing to the support of the gangsta culture- we are just as guilty.

Did you not have a friend while coming of age in the 70's that sold a little weed, acid or new where to get a little blow- the only difference is that guns are now a factor- it was inevetible.

Freddie - I hope you have taught your children to never partake in the support of organized crime- also known as smoking weed- or trying coke?

Loved your show- hope to hear ya soon!
