Let's Get Doan

May 8, 2007 @ 08:45

And on the subject of bad government, after what happened last week I've become a huge Shane Doan fan. I love the guy so much I want him to become a Leaf.

Last week was a sad and embarrassing day for our country and having Doan score three goals on Friday was a fantastic example of poetic justice.

How about this? The Leafs sign Mats Sundin, and then immediately trade him to Phoenix.

I realize Doan doesn't have the skill set that Sundin has, but he's younger and he obviously performs better under pressure.

It really is disgusting what politics can do to a fella - look at Ken Dryden.

If there was anyone in Ottawa that might be able to bring some sense to the Shane Doan situation you'd think it would be Ken Dryden.

Yes I know, he's boring to listen to and he didn't do much as president of the Maple Leafs, but he's still a hockey guy so you'd think he might be the one voice on Parliament Hill to say "guys, let's give ourselves a shake" and worry about more pressing issues.

But no, Ken Dryden has become a politician just like the rest of them. I couldn't believe it yesterday when I heard Dryden defend the decision to call Hockey Canada before a Parliamentary committee today.

Dryden says Hockey Canada receives a million dollars a year from the government, so they have every right to question the choice of Shane Doan as captain.

Dryden, once considered a man of principle has become just another government weasel who will do or say anything he's told if it means gathering votes - and in this case it's votes in Quebec.

And here's another thought. Don't you think it's silly that the issue here is Doan's captaincy and not the fact that he's simply on the team.

Think about it. All this furor is about the "C" on his sweater. I could almost understand this more if Gillies Duceppe had questioned why Doan was on the team at all.

It still would have been stupid, but considering the issue, why is it alright for Doan to be on the team, but not be the captain if he's such a "frog hating bastard."

This will go down as a sad and embarrassing day in Canadian history…. and while we're at it, if there's anyone in the riding of Toronto-Danforth who casts a ballot for Jack Layton in the next election, you're just as disgusting as he is.

Compost Bag

May 3, 2007 @ 08:13

Yesterday was quite the day for Green Party leader Elizabeth May, and there should be a lesson in it for us all.

May got her day in the spotlight. She was interviewed from coast to coast getting lots of attention for her goofy little party that no rational thinking person will ever take seriously.

What really bothered me is the way she was handled. She was more or less let off the hook with most of the interviews positioned like she was some silly little kid who said something stupid without really thinking first.

Imagine if you will, what the reaction would have been is someone from the "right" or the Conservatives had compared a Green Party policy to anything Nazi.

It would have been ugly and believe me the Prime Minister would not have gotten the free ride that May did.

Then again, the Prime Minister would never say anything so stupid and therein lies the lesson.

These environmentalists, these extreme left wing whackos are dangerous and more than willing to use any means possible to get their way and they'll say anything and do anything to discredit anyone who stands in their way.

There is no room for dialogue with these people. You either agree or you're a bad person and you'll be told, even if it means a comparison with Nazi Germany.

And the scariest part? They usually get away with it.

Finger Food

May 3, 2007 @ 08:12

I had what I think was a cultural learning experience yesterday.

While out and about I decided to feed myself so I stopped in at an Indian buffet on Kennedy Rd S. in Brampton.

It's a great deal, eight items including butter chicken, curried lamb, tandoori chicken and naan bread for $5.99, surely an economical feast for an unemployed radio guy.

Anyway, I grabbed my plate and as I approached the end of the buffet there were three people sitting at a table eating their lunch, and I couldn't help but notice one of the people was eating his meal with his fingers.

I'm not talking about a piece of tandoori chicken, or a big hunk of naan to mop up some butter chicken gravy, I'm talking about full blast "finger" eating everything on the plate.

He was literally picking up his basmati rice and butter chicken gravy with his fingers and shoving it into his mouth. He was doing the same thing with the lamb chunks and a couple of runny vegetable dishes.

For a split second I thought. "poor guy, there must be something wrong with him", but then I noticed the other two people at the table were doing the same thing.

They were all eating their lunch with their fingers regardless of the consistency, and then it hit me, it must be acceptable in this environment.

I've been to many Indian restaurants before but I've never seen anything like this. All the Indian restaurants I've been to have offered knives and forks and so did this little place in Brampton.

But these people were plowing in their meals with such ease and disregard for the people around them I now assume it's alright to eat Indian food with your fingers - and to tell you the truth I'm OK with it.

It's a lot easier than using chopsticks.

Lucrative Offer

May 3, 2007 @ 08:11

I may have mentioned that most days I sit by the phone and wait for radio stations to call.

Well I'm happy to report that I finally got the big call. It came yesterday morning about ten o'clock from CHUM-FM and it was a pretty good offer.

All I have to do is listen during office hours, and if I hear my name called, I can win between one thousand and ten thousand dollars by calling 416-870-2500 within 30 minutes.

It's called the CHUM-FM preferred listeners club and I graciously accepted membership.

To tell you the truth I never listen to CHUM-FM, and even though I like Roger, Rick and Marilyn as people I've probably never heard more than ten minutes of their show, but I'm willing to give this a shot.

But it's not going to be easy. I spent some time with arguably Toronto's number one station yesterday afternoon and to be honest it's not my cup of tea.

The Trailer 2007

May 3, 2007 @ 08:10

Roughly seven months ago I left you with this story. It was finally installment of "The Trailer" for 2006........

"Yes, it's always a sad day when we have to close-up the trailer for the season. It's a long off-season - like seven excruciating months.

But it was a good year. The weather was great, everyone stayed safe and the new dimension of the Tiki Bar provided a lot of fun.

On Saturday night we all gathered the Lodge next door for our annual Thanksgiving blowout which featured a fabulous pot-luck meal, a goofy little awards ceremony and then some bizarre dancing.

The weather was absolutely spectacular this Thanksgiving Day weekend, so that made the heavy hearted job of closing-up a little easier to take.

This picture is just another moment in time, part of the process of protecting yourself against a miserable winter. That's me and Dan Duran, our friend Pam and her dad Papa Doug lowering a Tiki Bar roof panel.

Don't be sad it's over. Be glad it happened."........

Well I'm happy to report that a new season of "The Trailer" begins this weekend.

As a matter of fact, I'm picking Dan Duran up this morning and we heading north to open up.

Opening up is a lot more fun that closing down and it looks like we're going to have some great weather over the next few days.

And that could pose a problem as far as FreddieP.ca is concerned.

I'm going to take my laptop, but there's a chance the technology won't be in place by tomorrow to allow me to post from the Tiki Bar. I may not be able to post again until Monday.

I'll try, but I can't promise anything. Keep checkin' in.

Until then, enjoy this picture. It's sunset off my dock.

Stafford's Irish Stew

May 3, 2007 @ 08:09

Stafford's blog, as usual, was a good read yesterday. He talks about Bell Canada's annoncement that the price of a pay phone call will rise to 50 cents next month.

He also talks about the sanitation of using a pay phone, and it reminded me of something that happened to me about ten years ago.

I was in the A+P near my house and halfway down an aisle I couldn't remember something my wife had told me to get. I didn't have a cell phone at the time so I went to the pay phone.

I grabbed the receiver and put it up to my ear and I got this horrible feeling.

Someone had horked onto the ear piece. Taken the receiver, worked up a good and gooey green one and horked it right in the middle of the ear piece.

As I pulled the phone a piece of stretchy phlegm kept my ear and the receiver connected.

It was terrible. I ran to the cashier and asked for some paper towel but even that wasn't able to get in all the nooks and crannies of my ear. I had to go right home and have a shower.

Ever since then, I always give the receiver a good goin' over before I use it.

Shane Doan - A Great Canadian

May 2, 2007 @ 09:18

I've got to admit, I'm a little pissed off at Stephen Harper and his government this morning. I never dreamed they would allow themselves to get sucked into something as petty as the Shane Doan issue.

To this point the Conservatives have conducted a sensible and reasonable government, so having them support a Bloc Quebecois motion to have Hockey Canada appear before a House of Commons Official Languages Committee to explain why Shane Doan is the captain of Team Canada is bitterly disappointing.

To their credit, the Conservatives resisted at first saying Doan's appointment to captain wasn't a government decision, but after Gilles Duceppe, Stephane Dion and Jack Layton beat the living shit out of the issue, the Conservatives relented and went along with this pathetic waste of time.

With a federal election on the horizon, and so many valuable votes up for grabs in Quebec, they weren't about to take any chances and that's sad.

This story is so maddening it makes you want to scream. First of all, Shane Doan still denies he made an anti-French remark towards referee Michel Cormier almost two years ago.

He denies it, and the NHL has cleared him of the accusations, but for some reason it's still an issue in Canadian government. A Canadian government that is bent and twisted out of shape by the Bloc Quebecois that doesn't spend one minute of one day in parliament doing anything for the betterment of Canada.

Talk about hypocrisy. Since when did Gilles Duceppe care about anything Canadian? Why does he care who the captain of Team Canada is? He and his ilk hate the country.

And what's with Jack Layton? I really think this man this man is losing his mind as fast as his party is losing support.

Layton came out yesterday and said having Doan as captain, "casts a shadow on the whole team." This is the same guy who's insulted our soldiers a few times over the past couple of years.

Meanwhile Doan sacrificed a few weeks of family time at the end of a long NHL season to captain a weak Canadian team in some god forsaken corner of Russia.

Have these assholes got nothing better to do with their time and our tax dollars? They should all be ashamed of themselves.

Only in Canada.

Whack Job

May 2, 2007 @ 09:17

Anybody who doesn't think the environmental movement in Canada is turning into a club for whack jobs has only to look at Green Party leader Elizabeth May

Imagine that, the leader of a political party in Canada, comparing the Conservatives environmental plan to Nazi Germany.

On Sunday, in a London, Ontario church, May said this. "Stephen Harper's stand on climate change represents a grievance worse than Neville Chamberlain's appeasement of the Nazis."

And it tells you a lot about Stephane Dion. He was quick to jump into bed with Elizabeth May a few weeks ago agreeing not to run a Liberal in her Halifax riding.

Now even Dion is backpedaling from this moron. He should have done a little more homework.

I Didn't Get An Invite

May 2, 2007 @ 09:16

Given my current situation there are a lot of days when I'm looking for something to do, and that's why I'm disappointed I didn't hear about todays Calendonia protest.

I got up to news reports this morning that a convoy of about 200 cars would be moving slowly along the QEW towards Queens Park as a protest against the unlawfull native occupation in Caledonia.

The cruel occupation that has cost home owners thousands in equity and business owners thousands in revenue. The occupation that our premier is doing nothing about.

If I had known about todays protest I would have joined it. I would have gladly pulled my truck into line and moved towards the correct destination.

Queens Park, where the premier is. The guy who's ultimately responsible for law enforcement in the province. The guy who continues to embarrass an entire police force and the guy who continues to insult all law abiding Ontarians.
